California teacher Joelle Clark said phones are a distraction and policies on their use can be hard to enforce. AdvertisementThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Joelle Clark, a 28-year-old public school teacher in California, about the state's new law requiring schools to develop a policy that limits smartphone usage by July 1, 2026. I'm a six-year teacher, and I teach special-ed high school students with mild to moderate learning disabilities. So, I moved out to California and I came into a school where students are constantly on their phones. Maybe we should have a class on phones to teach kids healthy habits and the danger of media.

Halloween revelers in Shanghai on Sunday. Video shared on social media and geolocated by NBC News shows dozens of police officers crossing a road near Zhongshan Park where Halloween revelers gathered in recent days. My 6-year-old was wearing a hat with a pirate emblem, and they even asked him to take it off,” read one comment Sunday from a Shanghai resident on Chinese social media platform Weibo. There was no official announcement of an outright ban or clear restrictions on Halloween activities from Shanghai officials, but local businesses reported receiving notices. Halloween-related activities appeared to go ahead as planned at Shanghai Disneyland and another theme park, Happy Valley.

New York CNN —A day after an E. coli outbreak tied to Quarter Pounders in the western part of the United States left one dead and 10 hospitalized, McDonald’s entered full damage-control mode. “We are very confident that you can go to McDonald’s and enjoy our classics,” McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger said on NBC’s “Today” Wednesday. Most of the illnesses are in Colorado and Nebraska, and most of the people who fell ill ate Quarter Pounders at McDonald’s. “If there has been contaminated product within our supply chain, it’s very likely worked itself through that supply chain already.”McDonald’s (MCD) stock fell more than 5% at Wednesday — its worst day since the March 2020 Covid lockdown. Chipotle’s outbreak is the worst-case scenario for any restaurant chain, and McDonald’s E. coli situation appears to be limited, at least for now, to a supply issue.

In yet another incident, crowds of angry drivers gather outside an apartment complex, demanding justice for a fellow delivery driver said to be bullied by security guards there. They’re among the many episodes of explosive confrontations across China involving delivery workers widely circulated on Chinese social media, showing people stretched to the breaking point. As China’s economy grapples with a raft of setbacks, from a protracted property crisis to a lack of consumer spending, delivery workers are taking a beating. That eats into delivery workers’ income as their pay is usually tied to a commission based on the price of the order. Dubai, UAE CNN —It’s 3am at the VIP airport terminal of Dubai’s Mohammed Bin Rashid Aerospace Hub and an ultra-long range aircraft is readying for take-off. The luxury, 14-seat private jet is headed for Europe, just as soon as its main passenger and his entourage arrive. It’s an elite club that enjoys private jet travel, which can cost anywhere from $50,000 to $200,000-plus for a single leg. Mouallem said the private aviation industry was accustomed to “different kinds of shifts across the world with banning private aviation,” insisting that the focus should be not on banning flights but ensuring greater adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). So that’s really an operator decision and a supplier decision,” Avetkiyan said, adding that her customers shouldn’t feel guilty about the environmental impact of private aviation.

New York City’s former Covid czar has admitted to participating in what he called “private gatherings” attended by multiple people while the rest of the city was on lockdown and large get-togethers were prohibited during the pandemic. “I served in City Hall between April 2020 — May 2021,” Varma said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Chris Vlasto. He became a national figure when Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving was barred from playing basketball in New York City because he refused to get vaccinated. At the time, New York state had increased the limit on outdoor social gatherings from 200 to 500 people. In the apparently heavily edited video, Varma appeared to recognize the hypocrisy of telling New Yorkers to isolate while he was partying with large groups of people.

But in his own way (very demure, very mindful) that is what happened Wednesday when he announced the Fed’s first rate cut in four years, a giant half-point reduction that will lower the cost of borrowing and offer financial relief for consumers and businesses. Whenever a reporter asks him about politics, Powell refuses to bite. Like on Wednesday, when he was asked whether the half-point rate cut had political motivations, he responded with something approaching exasperation. It’s just maximum employment and price stability on behalf of all Americans.”Of course, that’s unlikely to stop either party from using the rate cut news to their advantage, given that the economy is the No. Trump can continue to claim that a rate cut is a sign the economy is weak.
