Seeking to rein in the relative independence of The Times’s Washington bureau, Mr. Rosenthal in 1968 urged the publisher, Arthur O. Twenty years later, in 1980, I watched my father, Ronald Reagan, debate Jimmy Carter. There was the moment when then President Carter decisively (but politely) criticized my father for his opposition to Medicare. There was a moment in the third debate when Mr. Bush was speaking and Mr. Gore crossed the stage and got way too close to his opponent. Mr. Gore basically invaded his space, but Mr. Bush just turned, gave him a friendly nod of his head and smiled. He may as well have said, “Howdy.” Mr. Gore may have scored more points on substance, but people remembered that moment.

CNN —Alice Stewart, a veteran political adviser and CNN political commentator who worked on several GOP presidential campaigns, has died. Law enforcement officials told CNN that Stewart’s body was found outdoors in the Bellevue neighborhood in northern Virginia early Saturday morning. She went on to serve as the communications director in then-Arkansas Gov. Most recently, Stewart was the communications director for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s 2016 GOP campaign. David S. HollowaySpeaking about her role as a commentator for the network, Stewart told Harvard Political Review in 2020 that she brings “a perspective that I think CNN appreciates.”“My position at CNN is to be a conservative voice yet an independent thinker,” Stewart said.

CNN —The target date for the highly anticipated inaugural crewed mission of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft has moved yet again. The update comes just days after Starliner teams reported a small helium leak in the service module of the spacecraft.
