In today’s edition, senior national political reporter Sahil Kapur breaks down how Kamala Harris is handling shifting border politics. Plus, "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker previews next week's vice presidential debate. Harris seeks to neutralize immigration vulnerability as the politics tilt rightBy Sahil KapurKamala Harris is aiming to neutralize a political vulnerability and rebut Donald Trump’s core campaign message today as she takes her tough-on-migration stance to the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona. Trump has long held a clear advantage among voters on immigration, though NBC News polling shows that edge is narrowing. It also comes after snap polls and many observers concluded Harris bested Trump in their first — and perhaps only — debate.

Ohio Sen. JD Vance is set to participate in a town hall in Pennsylvania on Saturday with evangelical religious leader Lance Wallnau, who said after this month's presidential debate that Vice President Kamala Harris used "witchcraft." Wallnau has warned that Harris is being guided by demonic forces and has used “the spirit of Jezebel” to deceive followers. “She can look presidential,” Wallnau said on an online talk program this month, referring to Harris' debate performance. Lance Wallnau said Vice President Kamala Harris employed "witchcraft" following this month's debate. He has hosted Wallnau on his podcast, endorsed Wallnau’s voter mobilization efforts and has personally invoked the Seven Mountains Mandate.

What’s more surprising, however, is that one House Democratic just introduced a bill to codify Trump’s 10% across-the-board tariffs, revealing how the long-dormant trade policy splits both parties. But they largely fell out of favor during the late 20th century as the U.S. led a global free trade revolution. Despite Harris and other attacks on Trump's tariffs, the Biden-Harris administration decided to keep some of the tariffs Trump imposed during his first term on Chinese steel and aluminum and even increase the fees on strategic sectors like electric vehicles and semiconductors. Still, Biden and Harris have consistently criticized across-the-board tariffs as “indiscriminate” instruments that risk “undermining our alliances,” arguing targeted sanctions do not carry the inflationary risks of wider spread one. Most say the data is clear that freer trade leads to greater economic growth and they say Trump's across-the-board tariffs would raise inflation and could cost jobs.

Republican views of Taylor Swift have taken a nosedive in comparison to last year, a new NBC News poll shows, weeks after the pop singer announced her endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris. Just 12% of Republicans report positive attitudes toward the singer, down from 28% last year. Among Democrats, 58% view Swift in a positive light, a slight increase from 53% in 2023. About 26% of independents have a positive attitude toward Swift, a drop from 34% in 2023. The significant shift from Republican voters has pushed Swift’s overall favorability rating among registered voters lower than last year, decreasing from 40% in 2023 to 33% this year.

“Unfortunately, throughout this election cycle we have witnessed an unprecedented rise in targeted election disinformation campaigns,” Warner wrote to Jen Easterly, director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA). They say some understaffed state and local election agencies are ill-equipped to handle the problem and are uncertain how much they can rely on federal agencies for help. In his letter, Warner said state and local governments are hard-pressed to keep up with the rapid advances in AI-generated information operations. CISA has said previously that the agency has focused on helping educate the public and train state and local election officials about the tactics employed in disinformation campaigns. Instead, for any disinformation originating from within the U.S., it will likely be up to state and local election officials to flag it to voters.

Hurricane Helene moves through Georgia after making landfall in Florida. Kamala Harris visits the southern border in Arizona. The storm churned ashore about 10 miles west-southwest of Perry, Florida, at about 11:10 p.m. and with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. Harris is scheduled to make her first trip to the southern U.S. border in more than three years. “We do have a broken immigration system,” Harris said Wednesday in an interview with MSNBC. Republicans stand a good chance of erasing the Democrats’ narrow 51-49 Senate majority in November, a hard reality that complicates Harris' transition planning. Members of Harris’ transition team have studied that one — the handoff from Ronald Reagan to George H.W. Harris' team is operating under an unusually compressed timeline and is still building the basic apparatus needed to vet potential hires and staff an administration. Last month, Harris' campaign appointed Yohannes Abraham to run the team that is preparing for a transfer of power. He came to his new role with direct experience, having been executive director of Biden’s transition in 2020.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet at Trump Tower on Friday morning, according to Trump, giving the Ukrainian leader the chance to make a personal pitch to a GOP presidential nominee openly skeptical of continued US security assistance for Ukraine against Russia. Zelensky said this week that Trump doesn’t know how to end Russia’s war on Ukraine. CNN —US federal prosecutors on Friday unsealed criminal charges against three Iranian government-linked hackers in connection with a hacking operation aimed at Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Masoud Jalili, Seyyed Ali Aghamiri and Yasar (Yaser) Balaghi are accused of aggravated identity theft and wire fraud for their hacking efforts on behalf of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Separately, the US Treasury Department on Friday imposed sanctions on seven people as part of a sweeping response to Iranian efforts “to influence or interfere” in the 2020 and 2024 US presidential elections. The alleged Iranian hack threw a twist in the presidential campaign in August when multiple news outlets reported receiving emails from a pseudonymous email account peddling documents stolen from the Trump campaign. The hacking operation began in June, when the alleged IRGC-linked hackers targeted longtime Trump ally Roger Stone and used access to his email account to target campaign staff.

CNN —US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned Friday of “devastating” consequences if Israel engages in an all-out war with Hezbollah, telling CNN in an exclusive interview that casualties would “equal or exceed” the number in Gaza. “An all-out war between Lebanese, Hezbollah and Israel would be devastating for both Lebanon and Israel. And again, we anticipate that we’d see a number of people displaced, casualties that, you know, equal or exceed what we’ve seen in Gaza,” Austin told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. But now, as the dangers of a widening deficit and mounting debt grow, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are making little effort to address it. A budget deficit occurs when a country’s spending exceeds what it collects in revenue, primarily through taxes. The deficit is expected to widen under the status quo and could get even worse under proposals by both Harris and Trump, if enacted. During the Trump-Harris presidential debate earlier this month, the budget deficit was mentioned just twice, when Harris jabbed Trump for his proposals, which are expected to add considerably more to the deficit than hers. Federal prosecutors on Friday announced criminal charges against three Iranian nationals in connection with a recent hack of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's campaign and other cyberattacks. The charges come amid heightened scrutiny about how foreign actors, especially Iran, China and Russia, are trying to influence the American presidential race between Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. Officials have said that Iran is working to hurt Trump's campaign, while Russia prefers Trump, who has declined to say he wants Ukraine to win its war against invading Kremlin forces. China, meanwhile, has pushed anti-democracy influence operations but has not clearly sided with either the Republican or Democratic tickets, officials have said.
