Read previewDown rounds and flat rounds for VC-backed startups have hit an all-time high this year since 2014. And AI startups, which have been the darlings of the tech ecosystem since late 2022, aren't exempt from the trend. The deal was seen by some investors as an omen for a wider phenomenon in the AI ecosystem — an impending wave of flat rounds and down rounds. "Investors went crazy for AI startups with zero revenue, at higher valuations, which will be an issue," said Umesh Padval, managing director at Thomvest Ventures. Down rounds are on the riseIn 2022, 90.2% of AI startups in the US raised up rounds, while 6.5% raised down rounds, according to PitchBook data.

Becker, Minnesota CNN —The smokestacks on the aging Sherco coal power plant tower over gleaming solar panels that stretch across thousands of acres of farmland. The polluting coal plant is on its way out, scheduled for retirement in the next five years. Experts say this is the secret to solving America’s clean energy dilemma: There is more electricity from clean energy waiting to get connected to the grid than the entire amount of energy currently on the grid. Premier League Preview: Here We Go Again
  + stars: | 2024-08-18 | by ( Rory Smith | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The Premier League, they will say, is back. The Premier League — all club soccer, in fact — cannot be back, as detailed last week, because it never really goes away. Chelsea spent the Olympics signing vast quantities of South American teenagers for reasons that remain moderately opaque. Soccer, club soccer, is a juggernaut, and the thing about juggernauts is that they do not stop rolling. They do not rest up for a few weeks, take the summer off, have a bit of a rest.

Boris Roessler | Picture Alliance | Getty ImagesLONDON — European stocks were set to open lower Friday, extending losses amid a global downturn as a busy week of market action draws to a close. Germany's DAX was on course to open 104 points lower at 17,984, according to IG data, with France's CAC 40 down 40 points at 7,325. The regional Stoxx 600 index on Thursday suffered its worst session since mid-June, pulled down by financials as French bank Societe Generale downgraded its outlook and the Bank of England cut interest rates for the first time since 2020. The central bank decision took its key interest rate to 5% from 5.25%, in a move that markets had not been fully convinced it would carry out. Asia-Pacific markets saw steep losses Friday, with Japan's benchmark indexes tanking as much as 5%.

No businessman in China was more successful, famous or rich than Jack Ma, whose magic touch turned companies like Alibaba into international juggernauts. But an investigation by The New York Times and The Wire China found that another Chinese businessman, with deep connections to relatives of China’s political elite, had been secretly investing in Mr. Ma’s companies. Through a network of shell companies and stand-ins, that businessman, Xiao Jianhua, entered into deals in Mr. Ma’s companies over a period of five years, the investigation found. Mr. Xiao, a billionaire, is now in detention serving a 13-year-sentence for bribery and corruption, a high-profile target in President Xi Jinping’s dramatic consolidation of power. Mr. Ma, for his part, has all but retreated from public life, having no formal role in the companies he founded.

LONDON — While the European men's soccer championship ended in gloom yet again for England, the tournament boosted the nation's grocery store and hospitality spending — with no and low-alcohol sales seeing a particular boom. Take-home grocery sales increased 2.2% across the four weeks to July 7, with beer sales up by an average 13% on England match days, market research firm Kantar said in research released Tuesday. No and low-alcohol beer sales meanwhile spiked 38%, Kantar said, attributing this to the fact that many England matches were held on weeknights. It is the latest sign of strength in the no and low-alcohol beer market, which has grown rapidly in recent years with offerings from both the brewing juggernauts and incumbents such as Lucky Saint, which is served in cans and on tap in thousands of U.K. pubs and bars. Research firm IWSR forecasts the U.K.'s total beverage alcohol market will see a 1% decline across volume and value over the next five years, as no and low-alcohol grows 19%.

Some of the main winners of the AI boom will be stocks currently sliding under the radar. Across the road, ground has been broken on another data center. This specifically means data centers, which will be increasingly key for storing information as AI becomes more mainstream. On a single-stock basis, Digital Realty Trust — the only data center real estate investment trust listed on the New York Stock Exchange — has jumped 38% over the last year, while the Global X Data Center & Digital Infrastructure ETF has climbed 12%. French stocks are likely to take a further beating from political risk in the weeks and months ahead, but the impact will be focused in certain areas, according to strategists at Goldman Sachs. Along with an equity sell-off, borrowing costs climbed and the spread between French and German 10-year bond yields widened by 25 basis points. Goldman strategists expect that spread to remain wide in the coming weeks. "This would likely maintain the pressure on French domestic stocks, especially Banks, which are highly sensitive to sovereign spreads," Goldman strategists said in a research note published Friday. French domestic big names include supermarket chain Carrefour , construction firm Vinci and utility Engie , while its internationally oriented juggernauts include the likes of LVMH , L'Oreal and Remy Cointreau .

But the tech giant's play underscores the market's demand for tech talent — and venture capitalists expect a wave of "acquihires" to hit the AI ecosystem later this year. M&A dealmaking among AI startups is already off to a strong start this year, with 55 exits recorded in Q1 of 2024, per Crunchbase data. AdvertisementThe majority of AI startups are overpriced, said Konstantin Vinogradov, general partner at Runa Capital. AI startups with revenue in the single-digit millions that raised money at unicorn valuations, Dash said, might not even have that option. Those deals don't make sense for buyers, he said, which could lead Big Tech companies or other AI startups to poach their talent instead.

A UK-based AI startup, founded last month by former Cohere employees, is already in talks to raise a major pre-seed round amid venture capitalists' continued spending spree in the sector. Convergence AI, incorporated at the end of April, was founded by ex-Cohere employees Marvin Purtorab and Andy Toulis, who was also a machine learning engineer at Uber. Its primary aim, per leaked investor documents seen by BI, is to build out automated workforces using AI. The nascent business has been feted by several leading funds, with the company receiving at least six different term sheets for investment, two London-based sources said. The startup opted for a funding round led by London-based Balderton Capital, six sources familiar with the deal told Business Insider.

Bank of America says the ongoing "anything but bonds" bull market has led to a very top-heavy stock market. The firm is watching real 10-year yields and credit spreads for signals of when that AI-led rally could end. BofA says higher yields and tighter spreads could sound recession alarms and spur a stock sell-off. The key piece is the cohort of mega-cap tech companies that have long dominated stock-market performance, largely because of their affiliation with AI. In the meantime, if you subscribe to BofA's view, you should be watching the 10-year real yield for a signal of when any such downturn is coming.

Google headquarters is seen in Mountain View, California, United States on May 15, 2023. Google will begin removing links to California news websites from search results for some Californians in response to a bill that would require online ad companies to pay a fee for connecting state residents to news sources. The recent developments have upended many online publishers that count on Facebook and Google for traffic and are particularly painful for publications that rely on advertising revenue. "If passed, CJPA may result in significant changes to the services we can offer Californians and the traffic we can provide to California publishers," Zaidi wrote. Supporters of the California bill say it will help news publishers receive a fair chunk of the ad profits reaped by tech juggernauts like Apple , Google and Meta.

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Tuesday that a closed-door deal for Taylor Swift to perform in the city-state ensured she would not perform in other Southeast Asian countries during her Eras tour. The statement is the first confirmation from the city-state that the agreement for Swift to perform in Singapore contained exclusivity terms preventing her from performing in other countries. He also did not reveal the size of the grant to Swift, but stated the amount is "not anywhere as high as speculated." During her first three concerts in Singapore, Swift asked her audience to applaud — first the locals, then those who had traveled from overseas to come to the show. Mariam Pettit, partner at Global Founders Capital, said the rush toward AI was in part driven by investor FOMO. While investors and industry insiders don't anticipate the same fate for generative AI startups, many see the parallels between the two industries. Indeed, VCs are paying premiums and pre-empting rounds into hot AI startups in a bid to get a place on the cap table. AI founders are aware that they need to differentiate themselves in order to survive, at the very least. "And with vertical AI startups, it's much clearer that all the data we have is approved by the creator of that data."

Kansas City Chiefs: Are they the newest NFL dynasty?

The Kansas City Chiefs will appear in their fourth Super Bowl in five seasons when they take to the field in Las Vegas on February 11 against the San Francisco 49ers. On Wednesday, GOP Rep. Mike Johnson became the newest speaker of the House. Now, with new Speaker Mike Johnson at the helm, the party may grapple for some time with how opposite Johnson is from his predecessor. Johnson's sudden rise to becoming speaker comes just over a year before the 2024 election where the Republican Party is aiming to regain control. Neither prediction ultimately came true: Republicans only gained a very slim majority of the House and managed to lose footing in the Senate. Less than two years later, it's now Johnson's responsibility to make sure the Republican Party remains in power.

Australia picked up their first 50-overs title in 1987 before winning three in a row from 1999 to 2007. "I think we had a really strong run in the early 2000s," Cummins told reporters on Wednesday. With their fiery attack, formidable batting and electric fielding, Australia set the benchmark in 50-overs cricket during that era but reigning champions England have replaced them as the dominant limited-overs side, also winning the T20 World Cup in Australia last year. Cummins, in his first World Cup as Australia captain, is one of several frontline players returning from injuries but the 30-year-old says Australia have what it takes to win in India -- an abundance of all-rounders.
