Here’s the scoop: Social justice awareness can now be found in the ice cream aisle. The Vermont-based ice cream company on Monday launched Change Is Brewing, a limited-batch flavor of cold brew coffee ice cream with marshmallow swirls and fudge brownies. The news comes just months after Bush announced the $10 billion proposal intended to transform public safety. The division would be tasked with funding and coordinating research and offering grant programs to promote “non-carceral, health-centered investments in public safety” on the state and local level. “The People’s Response Act brings transformative change to our communities — change that is long overdue,” Bush told NBC News.

Ms. Greenhouse is one of the very best commentators, and she is right that God does not belong in the Supreme Court to be sure, but which God is she referring to, or is the Supreme Court referring to? It would be so helpful to identify which God is being cited, as there is certainly more than one. The Declaration of Independence famous declares that it is not “government,” but our “Creator” who has endowed us “with certain unalienable rights.”Indeed, the Supreme Court courtroom is adorned with such religious imagery as Moses holding the Ten Commandments. Two-thirds of Americans want abortion to remain safe and legal, if not entirely then at least to some extent. Thus, the pro-choice movement would do well to focus its energies on securing abortion rights through the legislative process.

How Tammy Faye Bakker became a gay icon
  + stars: | 2021-09-18 | by ( Scottie Andrew | )   time to read: +9 min
(CNN) Tammy Faye Messner (formerly Bakker) was camp incarnate. It was a departure from the norm to hear a person in her position -- half of an evangelical Christian couple -- support gay people, especially as evangelism became increasingly conservative. She interviewed a gay AIDS patientThe HIV/AIDS epidemic had barely been discussed by the US government, let alone a televangelist couple like the Bakkers, in the 1980s when it reached its peak. Messner defended her support of gay people as a devout Christian later in real life, too. The limits to Tammy Faye's support of gay rightsMessner's support had its limits.

Two months after Ben & Jerry’s said it would stop retailing its products in Jewish settlements located in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, several state funds are selling or threatening to sell their investments in Unilever PLC, the ice cream brand’s parent company. The New Jersey Division of Investment, which manages several state pension funds, said this week it planned to sell $182 million of stocks, bonds and other securities linked to Unilever, accusing the company of breaking state laws that prohibit the boycott of Israel. It didn’t give a time frame for the sale, and Unilever can appeal the decision.

Jessica Chastain is the only reason, though a good one, to see “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” a shrill biopic of the televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. (Mr. Falwell, played with ponderous self-importance by Vincent D’Onofrio, makes his entrance in slo-mo.) The main question about the production as a whole is why now, after decades of revelations about the financial manipulations and moral squalor of the TV empire that Tammy Faye and Jim created and sustained until their famously ignominious fall. The film is perfunctory at best as social history—all those scandals and betrayals are given short shrift—and adds little or nothing to our understanding of how pastors as flawed as the Bakkers can attract such enormous flocks. (The director was Michael Showalter, working from a screenplay that Abe Sylvia adapted from a 2000 documentary of the same name by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato.)

Democrats can't decide whether to close a tax loophole that's popular with the wealthiest Americans. It has to do with how, when Americans sell assets like stocks or bonds, they pay a capital gains tax on their earnings. If someone bought a stock for $100 and sold it for $250, they'd pay taxes on the $150 profit. Through the step-up loophole, however, those charges can be dodged entirely. Coupling that with a higher capital gains tax rate could raise more than $320 billion over the next decade, the White House said.

New Jersey has become the latest state to announce plans to divest from the company that owns Ben & Jerry’s over its decision to stop selling ice cream in Israeli-occupied territories. The state’s Division of Investment sent a letter this week to Unilever, the New Jersey-based parent company of Ben & Jerry’s, explaining that a state law passed in 2016 prohibited the investment of state pension funds in businesses that engaged in boycotts. At the start of this week, New Jersey had $182 million invested in Unilever stock, bonds and other securities, a spokeswoman for the state’s treasury department said. The move came as a response to Ben & Jerry’s announcement in mid-July that it would stop selling its products in the occupied Palestinian territories. “We believe it is inconsistent with our values for our product to be present within an internationally recognised illegal occupation,” the company said on its website.

(CNN) The stars outshine the movie in "The Eyes of Tammy Faye," a dazzling showcase for Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield as Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker in a dutiful, somewhat disjointed chronicle of how the televangelists amassed great wealth before his disgraced fall. While it's not a landslide vote, thanks to Chastain's disappearing act, "The Eyes" have it. Spanning several decades (and burying the leads under makeup before it's over), the film begins with Tammy and Jim meeting in 1960 and follows them into the '90s. "God does not want us to be poor," a young Jim says, raising the eyebrows of his Bible teacher. Within a few years, they discover television, taking a job working for Pat Robertson's Christian broadcasting operation, with Jim spouting the word and Tammy beguiling kids with puppets and song.

“My name is Michael Showalter, and I’m the director of “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” So in this scene, our two main characters— Tammy Faye Bakker and Jim Bakker, played by Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield— are attending a barbecue hosted by Pat Robertson, which is also being attended by a who’s who of the big names in the evangelical community. In this scene, Jim Bakker is excited to be sitting at a table with all of these BMOCs and wanting to make a good impression. And Tammy Faye is going to crash the party. I wanted to show the extent to which Tammy is trying to operate and be seen and heard in a man’s world.” “As you were saying, Jerry. I made a pledge to continue to expose the sins in this country.” “I think Tammy doesn’t pick up on some of the tension that she’s creating.

I love football, but sometimes I really, really, really wish I didn’t. If it’s a Friday before a college football game, there’s no reason for a player to do that. Viewership of the NFL, of college football, and in places where high school football’s a big deal, is steady. And that, to me, is the next frontier of, I would say, football humanity. And I would say about 25% of things the NFL owners have done and the NFL league office has done to make the game safer are actually real.

The recall campaign was long and divisive, political experts say, and the state’s problems increasingly resist simple solutions. Many more straightforward challenges were met last year with a massive state surplus and a flood of pandemic aid from the Biden administration. Now — although Mr. Newsom has the advantage of a unified base, a Democratic supermajority in the Legislature and the state’s attention — what remains are issues that require far more than money. “These are problems that take time,” said Jerry Brown, who governed the state for two eight-year stints in the 1970s and again from 2010 to 2018. And they’re the same old issues that have been around for a long time in modern California.”

Few people considered the blue button-ups and flouncy khakis of Ross Geller, Dr. Frasier Crane and Jerry Seinfeld’s eponymous TV alter-ego the peak of fashion. Once written off as frumpy, ’90s sitcom characters like “Friends” wiseacre Chandler Bing have somehow become genuine fashion icons. Recalls in California date back more than a century, to a suite of reforms passed from 1910 to 1913 under Gov. Mr. Johnson’s reforms broke the hold, overhauling the state’s election system and, through a constitutional amendment passed by voters in 1911, instituting the system of referendums, ballot initiatives and the recall. This is particularly true of initiatives, which can be put on the ballot with a few million dollars’ worth of clipboard-holding workers gathering signatures from registered voters. One recent example was Proposition 22, a $200 million initiative by the ride-sharing companies Uber and Lyft to prevent their drivers from being classified as employees. “That is the bigger problem here,” said Jim Newton, a historian and lecturer on public policy at the University of California, Los Angeles, who has written biographies of the governors Earl Warren and Jerry Brown.

Their deaths pointed a spotlight at talk radio’s general resistance to pandemic mitigation measures, especially considering that the audience leans old. Challenging elites and the imposition of government power is baked into the DNA of talk radio. Other traditional talk radio bad guys, including Democratic politicians, universities, Hollywood actors and pop stars, are the ones demanding vaccination mandates, imposing them and pushing vaccinations. But there is one final element driving talk radio’s doubts about vaccinations and masks — the bottom line. Talk radio is a business.

A growing number of states are enacting measures known as "pay transparency," which force companies to disclose their compensation levels. Crowdsourced sites and searchable databases are far from comprehensive or up-to-date, but they at least give you a general idea of what employers pay for any given position. The first state to compel employers to disclose salary information to job candidates was, predictably, California. (An Insider spokesperson told me that the company is currently reviewing its postings to ensure that they comply with Colorado law.) There, job postings that include salary information have quadrupled since 2019, according to Emsi Burning Glass, which tracks labor-market data.
