CNN —The confrontation in Atlanta between Joe Biden and Donald Trump Thursday night has a good chance of becoming the most fateful presidential debate in US history. The momentous nature of this debate can only be fully understood against the backdrop of the unprecedented politics of the times. But the tension surrounding this year’s first debate in June, rather than in September or October as usual, is palpable. “The closer the election, the greater the chance that a debate could influence it,” said Aaron Kall, director of debate at the University of Michigan, who has conducted an in-depth study of every presidential debate. Biden has raised the stakes for himself heading into the debate higher than those any modern president faced.

CNN —President Joe Biden swiped at renewed impeachment talk by top Republicans as he sold his agenda in Maine on Friday, suggesting his economic record was a threat to opponents. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy this week escalated talk of launching an impeachment inquiry into Biden and his family’s business dealings, prompting some backlash from moderate Republicans. The White House has dismissed the prospect, suggesting the president was focused on his economic agenda and not threats from Republicans. The White House said the state lost more than 42,000 manufacturing jobs between 1990 and January 2021. The visit comes after a week of positive economic news the White House says is the result of the president’s decision-making.

That’s essentially unchanged from last month’s NBC News poll, which had Republicans ahead by 2 points, 47%-45%, well within that poll’s margin of error. In this new poll, Democrats enjoy advantages among Black voters (77%-8%), those in the age group 18-34 (57%-33%), whites with college degrees (58%-38%), women (53%-40%) and Latinos (46%-42%). That’s essentially unchanged from August, when 68% of Republicans and 66% of Democrats expressed high interest. By comparison, Biden’s favorability score in the new NBC News poll is 42% positive, 47% (-5). And on the topic of abortion, 61% of voters say they disapprove the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in June overturning Roe v. Wade, compared with 37% who approve.
