That’s why Maricopa County has spent over $864,000 in federal funds and more than $3 million in county funds to bolster its election security and processes over the past four years. Officials readily shared their worries with CNN, citing death threats, harassment, baseless lawsuits, onerous public-records requests and various security threats spurred by false claims about voter fraud. Amid these challenges, budgets for election security have been squeezed in several ways. Thousands of election workers across the country have reported receiving harassing, offensive or hostile communications, including since the 2022 midterms, according to the Department of Justice’s Election Threats Task Force. As recently as Tuesday, Trump threatened to prosecute and imprison election officials if he wins in November, as he cast doubt on the integrity of the upcoming election.

☆ Scientists store entire human genome on ‘memory crystal’ that could survive billions of years

London CNN —Scientists in the United Kingdom have stored the entire human genome on a “5D memory crystal,” in the hope that it could be used in the future as a blueprint to bring humanity back from extinction. The crystal is stored in the Memory of Mankind archive in Hallstatt, Austria. “The visual key inscribed on the crystal gives the finder knowledge of what data is stored inside and how it could be used,” said Kazansky. In 2018, Kazansky and his team used the memory crystal technology to store Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation” trilogy of science fiction books, which were then launched into space aboard a Tesla Roadster. The technology has also been used to store major documents from human history, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Magna Carta.

CNN —At least 74 people have died and scores more are still missing in Myanmar following heavy flooding and landslides caused by Typhoon Yagi, state media reported on Sunday. The flooding across the civil war-torn country has impacted more than 450 villages and wards, according to Myanmar News Agency (MNA). Ron DeSantis’ administration is once again advising against the mRNA vaccines: this time in the most vulnerable residents. In updated guidance for health care providers released Thursday, the Florida Health Department and state Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo questioned the safety and effectiveness of the mRNA Covid vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, including for older adults and people with underlying health problems. Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccine expert at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said the Florida surgeon general's guidance is unnecessarily alarming people about the Covid vaccines. "The mRNA vaccines are remarkably safe," he added. The CDC currently recommends everyone ages 6 months and older get an updated Covid vaccine this fall from any of the three options.

CNN —Police have arrested and charged a man for allegedly stealing four Olympic medals belonging to Australian rower Drew Ginn. Authorities said Ginn’s medals were believed to have been stolen from the back of a Land Rover parked in the Victorian capital about a week ago. A GoPro camera, headphones and a wetsuit were also stolen, with police saying Ginn had left them along with the medals inside his car during a speaking engagement at a school. “They were hidden away in the car but the car was ransacked completely so lots of stuff was broken and destroyed,” he added. The 49-year-old voiced hope that, rather than being sold, the medals might find their way back to their rightful owner.

National polls showed a tight race heading into the debate, but some now believe Harris could get a bump from her performance. The rock group The White Stripes have filed suit against GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump's campaign for its use of the band's megahit "Seven Nation Army" in a since-deleted campaign video. White Stripes drummer Meg White is also listed as a plaintiff in the suit, which charges Trump and the campaign with "flagrant misappropriation." The duo seek unspecified monetary damages and an injunction preventing Trump from using their songs.
