A man in his mid-30s with Crohn's disease did DIY poop transplants using his mom as a donor for years. They appeared to ease his gut symptoms, but he experienced menopause symptoms such as sweating, hot flashes, and mood swings, similar to his menopausal mom. Experts in the documentary warned against trying poop transplants at home because there is a risk of transferring bad microbes and susceptibility to all kinds of diseases. After she made the switch, her acne went away, but this time, she experienced depression symptoms. AdvertisementWhen Koepke once again switched back to her brother's poop transplants, the depression went away within a week, she said.

It takes a full day working in temperatures up to 1,000 degrees Celsius to make one batch of Himalayan black salt, or kala namak. The salt was once used as a medicine to treat indigestion. Today, it's a staple in South Asian cuisine, and it's known for its unique eggy and umami taste. But the long and dangerous process of making it has pushed people away from the craft. The small-cap Russell 2000 has dropped close to 4% against a fractional gain in the S & P 500 year to date. In broad terms, the S & P 500 could retreat to 4600 or so – about 4% down from here – and still be in a routine technical check-back to its latest launch point in early December. Todd Sohn of Strategas notes that the Invesco S & P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) saw inflows go vertical last year to $13.5 billion, 30% above its prior 12-month record. Betting on 'peacetime' Fed cuts Right or wrong, the market debate right now can never get far before turning into a Fed-policy-path discussion. Last week's CPI and PPI data added to the market's collective conviction that inflation's downside momentum is strong, opening the way for "peacetime" Fed rate cuts.

Psyllium husk is a cheap fiber supplement that can boost gut health and aid digestive issues. I took psyllium husk for three weeks and was shocked by how big an impact it had and how fast it worked. My digestive symptoms settled down in week twoIn my second week of taking psyllium husk, everything settled down a bit. The texture of psyllium husk was too hard to overcomeIt's been a couple of weeks since I stopped taking psyllium husk and my body has returned to its previous state. I definitely think I was benefitting from taking psyllium husk, so I still plan on finding a way to incorporate it into my diet.

How Dogs Help Us Lead Longer, Healthier Lives
  + stars: | 2023-11-10 | by ( Jen Golbeck | Stacey Colino | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
Dogs seem to make us healthier than we would be without them. Social psychologist Bruce Headey conducted a survey of Australian dog-owners and found that they take fewer trips to the doctor and sleep better than non-dog-owners. It’s not that dog-owners are naturally healthier; bringing a dog into your life somehow brings these benefits along. James Serpell, a professor of animal ethics at the University of Pennsylvania, conducted a study in the U.K. that followed pet owners through the 10 months after they adopted their pet. Their scores on measures of general health also improved, and dog-owners increased their physical activity considerably.

Taco Bell is stepping up its breakfast game to compete with McDonald's. But lately, fast-food chains such as Wendy's and Taco Bell have demonstrated that they want to steal breakfast customers from McDonald's. So I decided to put the breakfast menus of McDonald's and Taco Bell to the test. McDonald's and Taco Bell have more than a dozen breakfast items on their menus. Taco Bell leans into burritos and breakfast wraps, while the McDonald's menu is heavy on breakfast sandwiches.

KFC is losing ground to Popeyes, according to a Barclays report. KFC and Popeyes are both logging more than $5 billion a year in sales, according to Technomic's latest Top 500 report. But Popeyes, which is expanding rapidly across the US, is selling food with fewer locations in the US compared to KFC, according to Technomic. I tried the same items found at each brand's menu: Fried chicken, chicken tenders, and a classic fried chicken sandwich. The chicken served at KFC was so greasy, I had to take Tums to relieve my indigestion.

Strange ‘earthquake lights’ explained

CNN —I once felt the immense force unleashed by an earthquake in 1999 when I was living in Taipei, Taiwan. It was a feeling I was reminded of again this week when writing about a mysterious seismic phenomenon witnessed during Morocco’s recent devastating earthquake. Force of natureReports of multicolor “earthquake lights,” such as the ones seen in videos captured before Morocco’s 6.8 magnitude quake on September 8, go back centuries to ancient Greece. Researchers are beginning to understand the different forms the lights take and where they might appear. One 2014 study found the mystery lights could result from certain rocks when put under stress, but there is still no consensus on exactly what causes these outbursts.

What Can Turmeric Actually Do for Your Health?
  + stars: | 2023-09-13 | by ( Alice Callahan | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Turmeric has been used as a spice and medicine for thousands of years. And in recent decades, it’s become popular as a dietary supplement, often sold as curcumin — a chemical compound found in dried turmeric — with claims that it can soothe joint pain, reduce inflammation and improve mobility. In Thailand, turmeric is also often consumed in its spice or supplement form to quell gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating and indigestion, said Dr. Krit Pongpirul, an associate professor of preventive and social medicine at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. But only a few small studies have evaluated such benefits. In a trial published Monday in the journal BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine, Dr. Pongpirul and his colleagues tested whether curcumin supplements could help patients with functional dyspepsia, a common gastrointestinal condition that causes stomach pain and feelings of fullness, nausea and bloating after meals.

A good treatment option for indigestion may already be in your spice rack, according to a new study. Researchers found no significant differences in the symptoms of the groups taking the drug, turmeric or the combination of the two, according to the study. Turmeric has been used by people in Southeast Asia to treat stomach discomfort and other inflammatory conditions, Pongpirul said. That said, curcumin and turmeric is “generally considered safe when consumed in the amounts typically found in food,” he added. Typically, turmeric spices contain around 3% curcumin, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Billionaire hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones believes the Federal Reserve has finished raising interest rates in its fight against inflation, and the stock market could grind higher this year. "I definitely think they are done," Jones said on CNBC's "Squawk Box" of the Fed's rate-hiking campaign. The central bank has hiked interest rates 10 times since March 2022, taking the fed funds rate to a target range of 5%-5.25%, the highest since August 2007. Jones shot to fame after he predicted and profited from the 1987 stock market crash. "We have no IPOs, no calendar, no secondaries, valuations are at 19 but nobody's rushing to offer so clearly, something is going on internally in the stock market," Jones said.
Wall Street’s still worried despite Friday’s fakeout

OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais said finger-pointing and misrepresenting the actions of OPEC and OPEC+ was "counterproductive." Oil prices settled nearly unchanged on Thursday after the European Central Bank (ECB) decided to slow the pace of interest rate hikes, with prices still down more than 9% for the week on demand concerns in major consuming countries. Oil prices tumbled this week after concerns about the U.S. economy and signs of weak manufacturing growth in the world's largest oil importer China, sliding further after the U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates on Wednesday. The ECB increased its three policy rates by 25 basis points, the smallest hike since the central bank starting lifting them last summer, and kept its options open on future moves as it fights stubbornly high euro zone inflation. Along with investor indigestion over central bank messaging, Wall Street stock indexes were under pressure Thursday from another rout in U.S. bank shares, which have reeled from the collapse of a third major regional bank over the weekend.
Private Equity’s Food Binge Goes Sour

Private-equity funds went on a buying binge for food companies before markets crashed in 2022. Now they have indigestion that is contributing to rising prices at the grocery checkout. The funds snapped up a record 786 makers of food and beverages worth $32 billion in 2021, using bundles of debt to pay for their purchases, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. The financiers projected that staple goods would keep making profits no matter how the economy fared. But that forecast changed, with the food industry soon hammered by higher labor costs, supply-chain disruptions and surging inflation.
What do you get you when you combine sausages, bacon, eggs, fried tomatoes, mushrooms, baked beans and hash browns? Indigestion, probably. But you might also get an argument.
But Eberhard and Musk butted heads, and Musk ousted Eberhard from his CEO role in 2007. Musk said that Eberhard was holding up production of Tesla's first car, the Roadster, and that Eberhard was responsible for other operational issues. And the proof is for the first time ever in decades we built a car company successfully. "His behavior changed dramatically as soon as we started having press about Tesla," Eberhard said. Musk has said the company "is as much a software company as it is a hardware company."

Stock futures are flat Thursday evening as investors responded to data that elevated concerns of a looming recession and looked ahead to a slate of Federal Reserve speakers scheduled for Friday. They will also look for any hints on future Fed policy from speakers John Williams, Michelle Bowman and Mary Daly. Investors are trying to gauge the pace of future rate hikes and the central bank's view of the economy. There also will be data coming in the morning with December's purchasing managers' indexes within services and manufacturing. Manufacturing is expected to come in at the same rate as November, while services is expected to increase by 0.3 points.
Pepto-Bismol, the familiar pink over-the-counter medicine, might be expected to ease diarrhea symptoms in people with or without COVID-19. The claim that “big pharma” is hiding the benefits of Pepto-Bismol as a treatment for COVID-19 is part of a narrative that COVID-19 was manufactured for the pharmaceutical industry as a source of profit, previously debunked by Reuters (here). Bruce Yacyshyn, an adjunct professor at the University of Cincinnati and co-principal investigator of the Pepto-Bismol clinical trial, told Reuters via email that there was a valid scientific reason to test the medication in the context of COVID-19. But it remained as yet an “unproven treatment” for the virus because “no placebo controlled, randomized clinical trial data is yet available for this drug in this indication.”WHY PEPTO-BISMOL? There is no scientific evidence that Pepto-Bismol provides any benefit as a treatment for COVID-19, and a clinical trial testing that question has not yet produced results.
How to save your sleep from the holidays

Watch your alcohol intakeWhile many of us believe that alcohol helps us fall asleep, it actually impairs sleep quality, Dasgupta said. “Remember, alcohol can make you fall asleep faster and sleep heavier during the first portion of the night. “Exercising improves sleep by reducing sleep onset, meaning it takes less time to fall asleep and decreases the amount of time you are lying in bed awake during the night,” Dasgupta said. “Studies have shown that exercise enables individuals with insomnia to fall asleep faster, sleep longer, and enjoy better sleep quality,” he said.
