Huawei's latest high-end phone features more Chinese suppliers, including a new flash memory storage chip and an improved chip processor, a teardown analysis showed, pointing to the progress China is making towards technology self-sufficiency. Huawei's latest high-end phone features more Chinese suppliers, including a new flash memory storage chip and an improved chip processor, a teardown analysis showed, pointing to the progress China is making towards technology self-sufficiency. Online tech repair company iFixit and consultancy TechSearch International examined the inside of Huawei Technologies' Pura 70 Pro for Reuters, finding a NAND memory chip they said was likely packaged by the Chinese telecoms equipment maker's in-house chip unit HiSilicon and several other components made by Chinese suppliers. Huawei's resurgence in the high-end smartphone market after four years of U.S. sanctions is being widely watched by both rivals and U.S. politicians as it has become a symbol of growing U.S.-China trade frictions and China's bid for technology self-sufficiency. Huawei launched the Pura 70's four smartphone models in late April and the series quickly sold out.

Apple's iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have a new frame design, which could make repairing the devices' screens or swaps of their batteries easier, according to a teardown analysis by iFixit, a parts vendor and gadget-repair advocate. That's in part because Apple uses software to lock parts to specific devices, making independent fixes more difficult or near impossible. Last year's mainstream model of the iPhone 14 — not the pricier Pro — also had a design featuring removable back glass. It requires manufacturers such as Apple to make rental tools, repair guides and authorized parts available to users to repair devices at home. In 2022, Apple introduced Self Service Repair, which allows repair shops and end users to rent professional-level repair tools and buy replacement parts from Apple.

Apple is now backing a California right-to-repair bill, a major shift in the company's attitude toward the movement and a potential boon for the environment, according to a letter obtained by CNBC. California Senate Bill 244 would require manufacturers such as Apple to allow customers to fix their broken or damaged devices. I'm grateful for their engagement on this issue and for leading among their peers when it comes to supporting access to repair," Eggman told CNBC. We create our products to last and, if they ever need to be repaired, Apple customers have a growing range of safe, high-quality repair options," Apple said in a statement to CNBC. Apple left the door open to supporting further expansion of right-to-repair in the letter to Eggman.

The new Nokia G22, which was rolled out Feb. 25, is designed to be repaired at home. The Nokia G22 has been designed to cut down on the steps and complexity involved in replacing a battery, screen, and charging port. The Nokia G22 starts at £149.99 (around $179), runs on Android 12, and has a battery life of up to three days. Circular, for example, is a subscription service that ensures Nokia phones are recycled or reused when a customer returns them. The Nokia G22 will be on display at MWC 2023 and rollout began Feb. 25.
BARCELONA (Reuters) - HMD Global Oy, licensee of Nokia-brand smartphones, said on Saturday it is developing capabilities and processes this year to bring 5G device production to Europe. REUTERS/Yves Herman/File PhotoEurope has no big smartphone manufacturing presence, as all the major companies, including Apple and Samsung, make their phones in Asia to cut costs. HMD in 2016 signed an exclusive 10-year licensing agreement with Nokia Oyj, once the world’s largest phone maker, to make Nokia-branded smartphones and tablets. HMD used Nokia’s remaining phone patents and manufacturing facilities of Taiwan’s Foxconn to build a new line of smartphones to compete with other budget Android phone makers. The company also unveiled three smartphones on Saturday - the Nokia G22, Nokia C32 and Nokia C22 - with three-day battery life and said it would begin repairing mobiles in collaboration with repair firm iFixit.
The Nokia G22 smartphone from Finnish firm HMD Global comes with a removable back to let you swap out broken parts. The next smartphone to come from mobile icon Nokia is a handset that users can repair themselves. The Nokia G22, developed by Finnish manufacturer HMD Global, is a standard smartphone with a 6.5-inch screen and a 50-megapixel main camera. Right to repair refers to a movement among consumer rights campaigners to make it easier for consumers to repair their gadgets. There is one drawback with the Nokia G22 — it only meets the IP52 benchmark on resistance against damaging substances, meaning it is not immune to water damage.
A redesign in the iPhone 14 not mentioned in Apple's keynote makes the phone easier to repair. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max do not open on both sides, and have the same build as older iPhones. Insider's Antonio Villas-Boas recently wrote that upgrading to the iPhone 14 from the iPhone 13 was likely a pass for most people. iFixit gave the iPhone 14 a 7 out of 10 "repairability score," and added that it's "the most repairable iPhone in years." This change sets the iPhone 14 apart from its fellow iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max that don't have the same front and back accessibility.
IFixit, which assesses the reparability of consumer electronics, said on Monday Apple has made major changes to the iPhone 14 base model. In the iPhone 14, the back glass is held in place by just two screws one connector, making it easy to remove. Apple did not mention the internal redesign when it announced the iPhone 14 earlier this month. It also creates opportunities for local repair shops.”The costlier iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max still have the older style of glued-in glass back. In 2019, Apple started selling tools, parts and manuals to independent repair shops.
People look at Apple Inc's new iPhone 14 as its models go on sale in Beijing, China, September 16, 2022. The iPhone 14, which went on sale last week, is the most repairable iPhone since the iPhone 7, which came out in 2016, repair advocate and tools vendor iFixit said in a blog post. "Apple has completely redesigned the internals of the iPhone 14 to make it easier to repair," wrote Kyle Wiens, founder of iFixit. The high-end iPhone 14 Pro models don't use the new, more repairable design, according to iFixit. This year's repair-friendly design on the iPhone 14 is in contrast to other iPhones and many Android devices that use glue and tight tolerances that make it more difficult to fix older phones.
An employee of electronics repair firm iFixit is seen opening models from Apple?s iPhone 14 lineup to reveal a circuit board inside in this undated handout image. Apple released its iPhone 14 lineup on Friday. Apple said earlier this month that the iPhone 14 models contain new hardware that makes possible the emergency message service, which Apple plans to turn on with a software update coming in November. In a statement to Reuters on Saturday, Apple said there is additional proprietary hardware and software in the iPhone 14 for the new messaging feature. “iPhone 14 includes custom radio frequency components, and new software designed entirely by Apple, that together enable Emergency SOS via satellite on new iPhone 14 models," Apple said in a statement.
