Hedge funds are rotating out of tech stocks, especially winning chipmakers, after strong gains in the first half, according to data from Goldman Sachs' prime brokerage . The Wall Street investment bank said chip stocks now make up 4.3% of overall net exposure on its prime book, down from a five-year high of 5.8% at the start of June. The sale of tech stocks by hedge funds coincided with a retreat in the sector, led by Nvidia , the biggest beneficiary from the artificial intelligence boom so far. The stock fell about 6.7% Monday, adding to its 4% decline last week that snapped an eight-week winning streak. While hedge funds dumped tech names, they were rotating into financial stocks for a second straight week and at the fastest pace since December, Goldman said.

MU YTD mountain Micron shares this year Nvidia's seemingly limitless rally stalled in recent sessions as investors took a break from semiconductor stocks. While it isn't a given that CEO Jensen Huang shows up at Nvidia's meeting, any commentary could provide an impetus for the stocks. Meeks noted that recent comments from Huang about AI chips during a trip to Asia spurred a bounce in shares. Comments could boost sentiment and convince investors the chip behemoth has yet to reach peak revenue, he added. Meeks called the selloff in chip stocks overdone, viewing a long-term runway for the AI theme at a reasonable valuation.

So far in the artificial intelligence hype cycle, software engineers are still operating at full force, with demand for skilled engineers expected to grow by 25% in the decade ending in 2032, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. But is the hyper-growth of AI as an engineering solution throwing a wrench in that expectation? This is a form of computational thinking, or computer-like thinking — one skill that will remain prevalent amid AI-enabled software engineering, Schuerman said. Talented engineers, Tang said, have a higher level of problem-solving, logic and reasoning skills. David Hsu, CEO and founder of app development platform Retool, believes AI in the software context is a propelling factor.

Sure enough, the next day began a historic ascent of Apple stock, an in-your-face rally that many thought made no sense. There's a coalescence of two themes, high speed, accelerated computing and increasingly intelligent AI, and neither works without Nvidia chips. I know that it seems impossible to ponder Nvidia's stock going any higher or passing Apple and Microsoft and staying ahead of it. Ask yourself, does any company match Jensen and Nvidia right now? I say let others be baffled over the Apple versus Microsoft versus Nvidia conundrum.

Nvidia has over 80% of the market for chips used to train and deploy AI software like ChatGPT. 100 on Interbrand's list for 2023 is Japanese camera maker Canon, with Dutch brewer Heineken at No. The risk for Nvidia, Silverman added, is that its "weak brand strength will limit how valuable it will be, despite its market cap heights." AdvertisementHowever, Nvidia's run faces one big risk: it depends on the generative AI boom lasting. Though tech giants, including Apple, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, now appear to have made generative AI their priority, there appears to be awareness of the technology's weaknesses. Google, for instance, was forced to apologize earlier this year after its generative AI image generator created historically incorrect images in response to user requests. For now, though, the industry seems intent on moving ahead with LLM-enabled generative AI. That should keep Nvidia in the race with Microsoft and Apple to a $4 trillion valuation.

Bank of America warned against seeing Nvidia as a potential long-term pullback victim while cautioning that today's artificial intelligence boom is altogether different from the 1990s dot-com bubble. Nvidia briefly rallied 3.8% on Thursday, helping send the S & P 500 above 5,500 for the first time, only to later retreat as much as 3.8%. Additionally, Arya pointed to demand among cloud customers for Nvidia's new Blackwell AI accelerator systems. The analyst said on-premise enterprise and sovereign AI demand as well as software monetization is still in the "early stages." When all is said and done, Arya said that Nvidia's valuation is still "compelling."

New York CNN —Nvidia, Wall Street’s artificial intelligence poster child, is now the most valuable company in the United States. Apple is the third most valuable company in the US with a $3.27 trillion market cap. Nvidia earlier this month joined the tech giants in becoming the only US companies to cross a $3 trillion market cap. Nvidia’s chips are unmatched in producing processors that power artificial intelligence systems, including for generative AI, the technology backing OpenAI’s ChatGPT that can create text, images and other media. The Jensen Huang-led company’s dethroning of Microsoft comes as Wall Street’s most prominent tech companies battle for the coveted top spot.

Autonomous trucking startup Waabi announced Tuesday it has raised $200 million in an oversubscribed Series B funding round led by existing investors Uber and Khosla Ventures. Waabi's latest funding round also includes Nvidia, a new investor in the company, as well as Porsche and the venture capital arm of Volvo. Using generative AI, Waabi has built a single AI system that is capable of reasoning, just as humans do, and that can come up with problems human minds couldn't conceptualize. The new investor round brings Waabi's total funding to $280 million since being founded in 2021. "This funding round gives us everything we need, both financially and strategically, to launch fully driverless trucks and accelerate our growth in 2025," Urtasun said.

Jensen Huang's biggest career lesson didn't come from a mentor or a fellow tech CEO. "I used to work from one of our international sites for one month each summer," Huang, the billionaire co-founder and CEO of computer chip company Nvidia, said during a commencement speech at the California Institute of Technology on Friday. While there, Huang came across a man working in a vast garden. Their interaction was brief, but the gardener's words became one of the "most profound learnings in my life," Huang said. This gardener has dedicated himself to his craft and doing his life's work.
