We could use some prayers right now, in a country inflamed with hate and prejudice and generational mistrust. Americans are at each other’s throats, living in different realities, fraught by two brutal, calamitous wars. ****Less than a year before the country chooses a president, President Biden’s poll numbers are almost catastrophic. While majorities of the country find both Trump and Biden unacceptable, Trump remains the Republican front-runner, bolstered by what his supporters see as overeager Democratic prosecutions. This scenario holds great peril for Republicans because Trump is the weakest candidate against Biden.

Nov 12 (Reuters) - New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick blamed "missed opportunities" after a dispiriting 10-6 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday as the once mighty NFL franchise cratered to their worst record through 10 games in more than two decades. "Obviously a disappointing game - similar theme that we've had other games this year: just too many missed opportunities," Belichick told reporters. "Just got to play better situational football and do a better job taking advantage of the opportunities we have." "When people (are) talking about 'Should Bill Belichick be fired mid-season?' Belichick and the team will have an extended period to regroup as the Patriots are on a bye week before facing the New York Giants on the road.

The brewer, which had first sponsored UFC from 2008 until 2017, took back the official U.S. beer rights from Modelo, the same brand that surpassed Bud Light this spring as the top-selling beer in the U.S. Its parent, Anheuser-Busch InBev, was praised by UFC Chief Executive Dana White for having core values in line with the mixed martial arts promoter.

But areas of the market dominated by small stocks and frequented by the country's retail investors have done surprisingly well. Scores of retail investors are dabbling in micro-cap stocks - stocks whose market capitalisation is tiny - operating under the radar of big funds and investors and their massive market-moving flows. Strategies such as Cui's stand out this year in a stock market depressed by China's wobbly economy, heightened geopolitical risks and surging overseas interest rates. Some brokerages are starting to recommend micro stocks to clients. GF Securities said in an October strategy report that buying micro stocks is part of a new investment paradigm in a stock market suffering from anaemic growth, and global decoupling risks.

BASF picks right time to share pain with investors

LONDON, Feb 24 (Reuters Breakingviews) - BASF (BASFn.DE) continues to provide the best metaphor for the German economy. The group will cut 2% of its workforce in a 550 million euros cost-cutting effort that includes plant closures. Investors who might have cheered the news sent the stock tanking by 6% as BASF boss Martin Brudermüller is also suspending a 3 billion euros share buyback. Politically that may have allowed the group to maintain its dividend at a planned 3.40 euros a share. The closure of one of two ammonia plants in the company’s stronghold of Ludwigshafen was expected - a Belgian plant in Antwerp can supply the global market.

Digital currency exchange Kraken will close down its operations in Japan next month, in another sign of consolidation in the battered crypto industry. In a blogpost on Wednesday, Kraken said it would cease crypto trading services through its Japanese subsidiary, Payward Asia, and deregister from Japan's Financial Services Agency on Jan. 31, 2023. It is the second time Kraken has left the Japanese market. It cited a combination of "current market conditions in Japan" and a "weak crypto market globally" as the reasons behind its decision. Japanese customers will have until Jan. 31 to withdraw their fiat and crypto holdings from the Kraken platform, the company said.
Well, as a matter of fact, yes, it could have been — even if all those things had actually happened. Call it negativity bias or affective asymmetry, but it is this: Relative to positive information, negative information carries more weight; moves us more strongly to act; and leads to greater learning — starting from infancy. According to this survival-based cognitive bias, we likely collectively succumbed to unwarranted negativity about the world in 2022 in at least three ways. This is a failure to accurately integrate positive and negative information by giving too much weight to the latter. Moreover, they are amplified because counterfactuals can be difficult to generate (i.e., it’s hard to remember the things that didn’t happen).
The events of the year took many investors by surprise and made the task of predicting bitcoin's price that much harder. The crypto market was awash with pundits making feverish calls about where bitcoin was heading next. When asked about his $250,000 target earlier this month, the Draper Associates founder told CNBC $250,000 "is still my number" — but he's extending his prediction by six months. The entrepreneur says he's also done making bitcoin price predictions. Buehler said lack of risk management in the crypto industry, missing regulation and fraud have also been major factors affecting prices.
Lessons From 2022 for Elitists and Authoritarians

The temptation to look back on a passing year for clues to a larger historical narrative is irresistible. Despite the inevitable short-termism of late-December amateur historiography, I’m not going to resist it. For some, 2022 was the year when liberty fought back. Russia’s disastrous war in Ukraine, China’s futile war on Covid and Iran’s brutal war on its own women are testaments to the evil and folly of a system in which leaders face no accountability. Their failures and cruelties—and the tragic human cost—call for humility from those in the West who have spent the past few years denouncing liberal democracy and its works.
SINGAPORE, Dec 20 (Reuters) - To borrow from Britain's Queen Elizabeth, 2022 is not a year on which the cryptocurrency world shall look back with undiluted pleasure. Crashes, contagion, collapses came in such quick succession that investors were, towards the end of the year, asking serious existential questions. After all, the largest cryptocurrency, bitcoin , has not kept its head above water for more than a week at a time, and is down about three-quarters from last November's $69,000 peak. What some saw as the final nail in the crypto coffin was the collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX exchange last month. Rather, 2022 has become the "I-told-you-so" case for regulators, who've largely maintained an arm's length from the crypto world or even banned trading in cryptocurrencies.
Ben McMillan, chief investment officer at IDX Digital Assets, said the rising popularity of blockchain-based tools including decentralized exchanges and decentralized finance had also been an important development this year. "We could see bigger allocations to digital assets once risk appetite resumes in 2023." Bitcoin and other tokens took a hammering, slumping by over half in just 49 days from the end of May. On a single day in June, bitcoin fell over 15%, its worst day since March 2020 when COVID chaos roiled financial markets. Bitcoin fell by a quarter in less than four days as Bankman-Fried scrambled for funds to bail his exchange out.

LONDON, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Imelda Staunton picks up the royal baton as the latest actor to play Queen Elizabeth in hit Netflix drama "The Crown", whose new season has faced criticism as it addresses a difficult era for the British royal family so soon after the late monarch's death. "This time in the royal family’s life was very tumultuous and the writers didn’t shy away from any difficult issues," Staunton told Reuters in an interview. Season five is released on Nov. 9, two months after Elizabeth died and her son Charles became king. Some royal commentators have voiced concern about the impact the show could have at the start of Charles' reign. "I think the proximity of the queen’s death...Nerve-endings are still raw, and people are feeling very protective," Staunton said.
As years go, it’s fair to say that 2022 has become something of an Annus Horribilis for Tom Brady. His Tampa Bay Buccaneers have lost three straight matches, the first time that’s happened in Brady’s storied career since 2002. The Bucs’ inconsistency has seen the 45-year-old quarterback’s frustrations boil over, with his explosive outbursts caught on the sidelines in multiple games. After rumors of marital unrest between him and his wife, Gisele Bündchen Bündchen, the couple announced last week that they are divorcing after 13 years of marriage. "I felt amazing to even just be in shooting distance of Max for some parts of the race," said Hamilton.
Windsor Castle is the resting place of more than a dozen English and British kings and queens. Most are buried in St. George's Chapel, including Henry VIII, who died in 1547, and Charles I, who was beheaded in 1649. The queen will be buried at the King George VI Memorial Chapel, which is next to the quire of the main St George's Chapel. St George's Chapel hosted the funerals of Philip, the queen's father, her grandfather George V, and great-grandfather Edward VII. Prince William, now heir to the throne, was confirmed there.
