Read previewA class action claim filed against LGBTQ+ dating and hookup app Grindr alleges that "potentially thousands" of UK app users had their private information, including HIV statuses, shared with third parties. The claim, lodged on Monday by UK-based law firm Austen Hays, accuses Grindr of breaching UK data-protection laws by sharing sensitive information with third parties without users' consent. Austen Hays alleges that the data breaches occurred before April 2018 and between May 2018 and April 2020, "although they may extend to further periods," it said. With more of us finding love and connections online, the risk of extremely personal data being shared and potentially monetized is growing. In an email statement sent to Business Insider, a Grindr spokesperson said: "We are committed to protecting our users' data and complying with all applicable data privacy regulations, including in the UK."

Cosmic’s niche is more planet-friendly: Its founder says its backyard homes can generate enough energy to supply some to the primary house. But Cosmic says its units' battery and solar energy systems can generate more than it uses, cutting the homeowner's electricity bill. The studio unit has a five-panel, 2.2-kilowatt photovoltaic system and a five-kilowatt-hour battery. Its founder told BI that both could be upgraded to become a "power plant" for the primary home. Even the water systems have been optimized: The ADUs can be further upgraded with a recycling water filtration system, allowing water to be reused for non-drinking purposes like the toilet or washing machine.

The city of Berkeley, Calif., has agreed to repeal a landmark climate rule that would have banned natural gas hookups in new homes, throwing into question the fate of dozens of similar restrictions on gas in cities across the country. The city settled the lawsuit last week by agreeing to immediately halt enforcement of the rule and eventually repeal it altogether. “To comply with the Ninth Circuit’s ruling, we have ceased enforcement of the gas ban,” Farimah Brown, the city attorney for Berkeley, said in an email. However, she added, “Berkeley will continue to be a leader on climate action.”The decision could have widespread ripple effects. Many of those efforts are facing fierce resistance and legal challenges from the gas industry, restaurants and homebuilders.

I deleted all dating apps, which had crept onto my phone like an oil spillage. Grindr started to rule my lifeGrindr is more of a hook-up app than a dating app. I grew up for years feeling isolated and excluded from the standard dating life my straight peers freely enjoyed. AdvertisementI recently finished reading "The Velvet Rage" by psychologist Alan Downs, which theorizes that gay men seek validation to compensate for the shame they felt growing up in a straight man's world. AdvertisementTill then, the distinctive bright orange grid and borderline iconic "brrrrup" notification sound have been silenced for a more old-fashioned dating life.

I would waste time and energy fantasizing about relationships with men who I inexplicably found flawless, but in reality were emotionally or physically unavailable. I've spent 10 years interviewing experts on longing, as well as people who've experienced limerence, for my podcast The Longing Lab, TEDx talk, and forthcoming book, "When Longing Becomes Your Lover." The emotional reward was the happy hormone dopamine I'd feel from imagining a relationship together or anticipating a response. Writing it down helped me believe it — and recognize my limerent feelings toward unavailable men as a dead end. I found his love and availability very attractive — something I never would have seen in my 20s and 30s.

In any case, lockdowns eventually ended, vaccines were finally released, and I became a digital nomad in the summer of 2021 — and then, I began to date men abroad. Here's what I learned after dating guys in Scotland, France, Spain, and Argentina. Still, the guy was more present during our relationship than any of the men I'd dated back in the US. I had to check my privilege after dating in ArgentinaWhile dating in Argentina, I faced a bit of a reality check. To acknowledge this privilege — and balance it out — I began addressing Americans' "travel privilege" in my writing and engaging more with local communities abroad.

A coalition of 25 state governors announced a major push to reach 20 million deployed heat pumps by 2030, they said in New York City on Thursday. Heat pumps are energy efficient replacements for fossil fuel powered furnaces and air conditioners. Heat pumps can also save consumers money -- around $300 a year in the United States, according to the IEA. In places like Europe, where gas prices are higher, having a heat pump can save customers around $900 a year, the IEA says. Maine, for example, has been remarkably successful in installing heat pumps with its own legislative action.

One of the first associations with Grindr, an LGBTQ+ dating app, that comes to mind for Omar Alexis is hookups. Grindr told Insider about 25% of its users reported using the app to network, despite the reputation for instant hookups associated with the company since the early years of its founding. "According to data from a survey of Grindr users, approximately 25% of our users say that one of their key activities on Grindr is to network," a company spokesperson wrote in an email to Insider. Solar Power’s China Problem

Economies of scale and government subsidies, especially in China, have helped to drive down solar energy prices by 85 percent since 2010, supercharging a global boom in new hookups. This year, for the first time, investors are expected to put more money into solar than oil. But the solar energy supply chain is still dominated by China, an authoritarian regime engaged in a trade war with the U.S. And many of the industry’s key materials and components are made with forced labor from the Xinjiang region in western China. In recent years, other countries, led by the U.S., have finally gotten serious about trying to challenge China’s dominance. The report, produced by human rights and solar industry experts, found that the vast majority of solar panels still have significant exposure to the Xinjiang region, where the U.S. and the U.N. say the Chinese government is committing numerous human rights violations.

The downside of car camping is the fact that these campgrounds are often packed to the rafters with other campers. While RV camping may seem like a recent phenomenon, it’s actually been around for more than 100 years. Among the websites that list RV campgrounds and post very useful user ratings are RVshare/Hipcamp, RV Life and Good Sam. Other than maybe car camping, it requires the least expense and equipment. The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management has set aside areas for free camping in national forests, national grasslands and BLM-managed lands.

New York’s Democratic-controlled state Legislature passed the ban, which would go into effect beginning in 2026. Photo: Hans Pennink/Associated PressNew York is set to become the first state in the U.S. to ban gas stoves in new homes and apartments. The Democratic-controlled state Legislature passed a bill late Tuesday that prohibits natural-gas and other fossil-fuel hookups in new residential buildings. Kathy Hochul , a Democrat, is expected to approve the measure, which was included in the state’s budget.
The law would likely take effect in 2026 for most new buildings under seven stories and in 2029 for larger buildings. The statewide ban would follow legislation passed by New York City in 2021 that bans natural gas hookups in new buildings by the end of this year. New York was the sixth-largest natural gas consumer among the states in 2020, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. And in 2021, the residential sector — where three out of every five households use natural gas for heating — comprised over one-third of the natural gas delivered to New York residents, the agency found. "New York state is leading the way in ending America's devastating addiction to fossil fuels," said Food & Water Watch Northeast Region Director Alex Beauchamp.

A romance novel is a high-wire act: It’s all about balance. If characters are yearning, there must be something keeping them apart. Not only do Nisha and Elias already know each other when the novel begins — they’ve been teammates for years — but they’re also best friends. If they said “I love you,” nobody would find it strange, but nobody would hear the real meaning, either. So I guess I’ll give this dating app a try — want to help me build a profile?”
Gas Stoves Triumph Over Berkeley

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday delivered a setback to the progressive war on gas stoves by holding that federal law pre-empts local bans. New York Gov. Berkeley, Calif., in 2019 became the first city to prohibit natural gas connections in new buildings. San Jose, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle and others have followed. Ms. Hochul has proposed a statewide ban on gas hookups in new small buildings in 2025 and larger ones in 2028.
