OKLAHOMA CITY — Two Oklahoma death row inmates facing executions in the coming months offered firing squad as a less problematic alternative to the state’s three-drug lethal injection, one of their attorneys told a federal judge on Monday. He also said that unlike lethal injection, there is an extremely low likelihood that the execution would be botched. It had been Mr. Mooney’s first real-ish New York summer, and, like many residents, he was determined to (responsibly) soak up all that the waking city had to offer. “Nothing was open when I got here,” he said during an interview in late September, sipping a lager outside the Levee, a stalwart dive bar in Williamsburg. Mr. Mooney, 35, was wearing a black T-shirt, black pants, a pearl necklace and white Nikes that had the word “gauche” scrawled in Sharpie ink across one of their soles, a reference to his Instagram handle, @gauchecowboy. Mr. Mooney started the popular account, which displays his Polaroid portfolio, in the spring of 2020, soon after he relocated up north after a brief stint in New Orleans and nearly a decade in Austin, Texas. “And I was like, ‘That’s kind of me.’”He had come to New York in April 2020, under dire circumstances.

As the contents inside were unpacked, they appeared to match the description of the 1887 time capsule they had been looking for. Records maintained by the Library of Virginia suggest that dozens of Richmond residents, organizations and businesses contributed about 60 objects to the capsule, including Confederate memorabilia. The box was discovered and carefully extracted from the monument site a day earlier, marking the end of a long search for the elusive capsule. Ridgway said the box, which weighed 36 pounds, was found in water in a little alcove of the pedestal. Litigation pushed back his plans, and the statue was not removed until September, after a court cleared the way.

A patient I had cared for one night some weeks ago, a mother in her 30s with coronavirus and severe respiratory failure, was finally being discharged to a long-term acute care hospital. Earlier that day, my colleague had explained to her what had happened during her long hospital stay and what might come next in rehab. “A 40-year-old unvaccinated man with severe Covid pneumonia.” I wonder about this, about what impact it has. But still the residents clapped for a moment to celebrate the victory before returning to the work of the day. I used to think that I would care for one final coronavirus patient, but I realize now that is not the case.

Footage from St. Louis TV stations showed dozens of emergency vehicles at the Amazon center near Edwardsville, Illinois, about 25 miles west of St. Louis. A photo in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch showed a large portion of the wall and roof of the massive Amazon warehouse completely collapsed. The collapse came as a strong thunderstorm, and possibly a tornado, ripped through the St. Louis area. The National Weather Service office in suburban St. Louis confirmed the death, but no further information was immediately available. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency early Friday for what he said was major tornado damage in several western counties.

Oklahoma is preparing to execute a man Thursday for the 1985 shooting death of an Oklahoma City-area schoolteacher after federal courts rejected his claim that the state’s three-drug lethal injection method is unconstitutional. Bigler Stouffer II, 79, is set to receive a lethal injection at 10 a.m. at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester. Stouffer has maintained his innocence in the attack that left Linda Reaves dead and her boyfriend, Doug Ivens, seriously injured. “I was not present when Linda Reaves was shot,” Stouffer told the board during a video appearance from prison. It was later learned the same wrong drug had been used to execute an inmate in January 2015.

Investigators also found the murder weapon wrapped in a bandana with Jones’ DNA in an attic space above his bedroom. Jones claims the murder weapon was placed there by the actual killer, who visited Jones’ house after Howell was shot. The state’s Pardon and Parole Board twice voted 3-1 to recommend Stitt grant clemency to Jones and commute his sentence to life in prison. “We need Julius Jones to be held responsible.”In a separate vote on Wednesday, the same board voted 3-2 to grant clemency to another death row inmate, Bigler Stouffer, citing concerns with the state’s lethal injection protocols. Thursday’s lethal injection ended a six-year moratorium on executions in Oklahoma that was brought on by concerns over its execution methods, including prior use of midazolam. Arkansas and Ohio are among other states that use that dose of midazolam in executions. “It’s just an insane dose and there’s probably no data on what that could cause,” said Jonathan Groner, an Ohio State University medical school surgery professor and lethal injection expert. Even before Grant’s execution, more than than two dozen Oklahoma death row inmates were part of a federal lawsuit challenging the state’s lethal injection protocols, arguing that the three-drug method risks causing unconstitutional pain and suffering. The Corrections Department’s statement indicating that the execution wasn’t botched could provide proof of the protocols’ unconstitutionality, said Denham.

The director of Oklahoma’s prison system said on Friday that he did not plan to make any changes to the agency’s lethal injection protocols, a day after a man vomited while shaking for several minutes during the state’s first execution since 2015. The man, John Marion Grant, was the first person executed by Oklahoma since prison officials made severe mistakes in previous executions, including using the wrong drug in one instance and, in another, allowing a prisoner to regain consciousness. Mr. Grant, 60, was convicted of stabbing a prison cafeteria worker to death in 1998. Mr. Murphy said it was unclear whether Mr. Grant was conscious, though he was breathing. Before the other drugs were administered, the doctor entered the execution chamber to wipe vomit from the face of Mr. Grant, who was strapped to a gurney.

After a number of pandemic-induced delays , the latest movie adaptation of Frank Herbert's 1965 sci-fi classic novel "Dune" is landing in theaters and on HBO Max this weekend. Here's a look back at previous adaptations and why audiences today may be likely to appreciate Villeneuve's adaptation. A "Dune" film became reality when director David Lynch -- coming off the success of "The Elephant Man" -- took on the project. At the time of writing, Villeneuve's "Dune" has taken in well over $100 million at the international box office. Plus, mainstream audiences today may simply be more ready than ever for a "Dune" adaptation than they were before.

RICHMOND, Va. — Now that an iconic statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee has been taken down from its perch above Richmond’s Monument Avenue, crews plan to remove a piece of history from its gigantic pedestal. A time capsule from 1887 that state officials believe is tucked inside the statue’s base is set to be removed Thursday. Historical records and imaging tests helped state officials pinpoint the capsule’s location in the cornerstone of the 40-foot tall concrete pedestal. The bronze equestrian statue of Lee was one of five enormous Confederate tributes along Richmond’s Monument Avenue and the only one that belonged to the state. It is fitting that we replace the old time capsule with a new one that tells that story,” Northam said in a news release.
