It's a tradition known as a "death gratuity" that's been in place for at least 140 years. They were also handing over $174,000 to Katherine Feinstein, the daughter of the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein. But Katherine Feinstein, a former judge in San Francisco and the only child of the recently-deceased California Democrat, almost certainly does not need that money. DoorDash recently fired a driver after he cursed at a woman for tipping $5 on a $20 order. It comes as more businesses are asking customers to tip at cash registers and even at self-checkout stations. In a blog post from 2019, Grubhub suggested customers tip 20% — and consider adding more if it's an extra-big order, or if there's bad weather. On top of a nightly charge of as much as £918, or about $1142, the hotel charges guests a daily £15, or $19, service fee. The Dreamcatcher DW in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is another hotel that charges an undisclosed $15 a night "hotel fee." "We do have a $50 check-in fee that started at the beginning of this year," a spokesperson for Hanalei Bay Resort told Insider. More general resort fees that are tacked onto customer bills are not new. Hrubant says that resort fees started to become standard in major cities in 2018, functioning as an ancillary fee that can "gouge clients."

Cruise lines like Carnival and Norwegian have either raised daily gratuities, WiFi fees, or both. Cruise lines have seen an increase in onboard spending as they continue to add more premium amenities and dining. Others, like Norwegian Cruise Line, are raising the daily tip rate up to $5 for passengers staying in higher-end staterooms and suites. Meanwhile, Carnival has raised both daily gratuity and WiFi fees, the latter by $5 for premium WiFi. An increase in WiFi fees is just a "natural inflationary price increase," Patrick Scholes, an analyst at Truist Securities, told Insider.
