Donald Trump and Joe Biden come into Thursday’s presidential debate as incredibly well-known quantities defined by shared unpopularity and competing weaknesses. But their most important liabilities — for the incumbent, his decrepitude and his record on inflation; for the challenger, an unfitness distilled and confirmed by the events of Jan. 6 — feel too well known to be worth discussing further until we see what happens on the stage. Maybe Biden’s entire campaign will implode when he answers a question about inflation with a Grandpa Simpson ramble about the price of a frozen custard on Rehoboth Beach in 1968. Maybe Trump will turn into Colonel Jessep under Jake Tapper’s questioning and claim full responsibility for the 2021 riot at the Capitol. But before the two men meet with those or other destinies, it’s worth giving some space to their crucial secondary weaknesses, the places where each candidate’s support might be undermined among those “double-hater” voters who regard each candidate’s primary liabilities as canceling the other’s out.

I talked to Samuel Freedman, a Columbia Journalism School professor, about his recent book about Humphrey and the 1948 Democratic convention in Philadelphia. The book’s title, “Into the Bright Sunshine,” is taken from a line in Humphrey’s rousing speech on civil rights. In 1968, the Democratic Party was operating under old rules in which primary voters actually had relatively little direct effect on delegates. When Strom Thurmond and the Dixiecrats bolted from the Democratic Party in 1948, that’s the beginning of the vast majority of the White South becoming Republicans, stepping away from the Democratic Party. Show me a major Republican politician in the MAGA movement who is a fervent supporter of civil rights legislation.

On May 30 and May 31 — the day of the conviction and the day after — at least $27 million in itemized contributions flowed into the former president’s main campaign committee, according to a CNN analysis of donors giving at least $200 over the cycle. Prior to the conviction, the two largest fundraising days were following Trump’s indictment in the hush money case in Manhattan in early April 2023 — his first indictment — and his booking into the Fulton County jail in late August for charges in the Georgia 2020 election subversion case. But each of those days brought in daily itemized contributions closer to $1.3 million, less than a tenth of the nearly $15 million that flowed into the campaign on May 30 of this year, the records show.

There's little data available to show whether gambling violations like these occur more or less often in the age of legal gambling, in part because they weren't easily tracked before 2018. As sports-betting continues to expand in more states and the industry evolves, there may be more gambling scandals to come.

Only 13% of US employees, for instance, said their organizations had Summer Fridays, in a 2023 survey commissioned by consulting and research firm Gartner. Among US employers, a survey last year from HR consulting firm Mercer found that only 19% said they offered summer working hours, up from 15% in 2021. Nevertheless, some employees may have even better options today, thanks to the transformation of work culture spurred by the pandemic. But Caitlin Duffy, senior director of Gartner’s HR practice, said she wouldn’t be surprised if Summer Fridays become less of a featured benefit from employers because flexible work has become so much more prevalent.
