HOUSTON — A former Houston police officer was convicted Wednesday of murder in the deaths of a couple during a 2019 drug raid that revealed systemic corruption problems within the police department’s narcotics unit. A jury found Gerald Goines guilty of two counts of murder in the January 2019 deaths of Dennis Tuttle, 59, and his 58-year-old wife Rhogena Nicholas. Goines looked down and did not visibly react as the verdict was read in a Houston courtroom. Goines’ attorneys argued during the trial that the first to fire at another person was Tuttle and not police officers. The probe into the drug raid also uncovered allegations of systemic corruption.

While it was an asset to Biden in polling against Trump, it appears to be a much bigger advantage for Harris. And in this new NBC poll, Harris’ advantage was just under 20 points. It’s obvious at this point that Trump will win men by close to double digits, ditto with Harris among women. But many voters have seen "Vice President Kamala Harris" as a fresher candidate, including those who previously viewed Trump as a better steward of the economy. That would spell doom for Democrats' Senate majority.

New Delhi CNN —India has confirmed its first case of a deadlier strain of mpox, which has raised alarm among health officials around the world over the rapid pace of its spread. On Wednesday, the state’s Health Minister Veena George hailed Kerala’s “robust health care system” for detecting the case. The strain has since been detected in several countries outside Africa, including Sweden and Thailand. Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that can spread easily between people and from infected animals. Clade II was responsible for a global outbreak that WHO also declared a global health emergency from July 2022 to May 2023.

A man convicted in the murder and robbery of Philadelphia rapper PnB Rock at a famous Los Angeles eatery was sentenced Monday to 31 years to life in prison. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Connie Quinones read his sentence Monday at the Compton Courthouse. Moore said an "extensive amount" of jewelry was taken from PnB Rock in the deadly robbery. Over the past few weeks, economic news from the U.K. has heavily focused on the state of British national finances and how they might impact both the British public and the prospects for economic growth. Regardless of how the U.K. fiscal situation stands now, it is clear that the current shortfalls are both years in the making and run the risk of having consequences that could last for years to come. The ultimate dilemma facing Labour now is that the country cannot produce enough revenue to close systemic shortfalls without sustained economic growth, but it also cannot create economic growth without real investment, both from the public and private sectors. In many ways, the current fiscal situation dates back to the financial crisis of 2008 and the fact that the country's economy was unable to snap back readily to close the budget shortfalls that occurred then. Two reports released Monday provide a mixed but compelling outlook on the wave of book removals and challenges as the annual Banned Books Week begins for schools, stores and libraries nationwide. The ALA attributed the decline in book challenges in the first eight months of 2024, in part, to the work of anti-censorship activists and “success in courts” against laws that restrict book access. “But, you know, the First Amendment protects the rights of minors as well.”While the ALA’s report shows signs of book challenges abating, objections to certain titles still persist.
