Opinion | Reflections About the Prisoner Swap

To the Editor:Re “Journalists and Dissidents Freed From Russia in Swap of 24 Inmates” (front page, Aug. 2):As a former U.S. journalist in Moscow, I am naturally delighted that Evan Gershkovich is back at home after 16 months of wrongful detention in Russia. But it is galling to see him and other innocent Americans being exchanged in a Cold War-style spy swap for a trained assassin and long-term sleeper agents. Engaging in hostage diplomacy only encourages hostile governments to seize more Americans as hostages whenever they want to recover one of their own killers or spies. Even at the height of the Cold War, American journalists in Moscow never feared arbitrary detention in a K.G.B. It seems that the only language that authoritarian leaders like Vladimir Putin understand is reciprocity.

Can New York City Ever Win Its War Against Rats?
  + stars: | 2024-07-19 | by ( Ginia Bellafante | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
What do rats do in heat waves? As temperatures have continued to stifle all will, and the humidity level has been Bangkok-in-a-thunderstorm-percent high, I raised the question with Kathleen Corradi, New York City’s first dedicated rat czar. The specific target of her enmity is the improbably named Norway rat, the dominant species in the city. Rats are mammals, Ms. Corradi pointed out, and they find oppressively warm weather as enervating as we do. A happy rat is reproducing at a rate that science says we cannot exterminate our way out of.”

"It was harder than the initial assault," Kostial said of being stalked. The Aetna NDA only silenced her about the terms of her settlement, not the sexual assault. Kostial has discussed her situation with Vincent White, a New York city-based lawyer who specializes in workplace NDAs and advises signatories on the risks associated with breaking them. Kostial is fearful that if they wed, her wife's finances could be affected if either SAP or Aetna pursues her for breaking her NDA. In early 2020, Franziska Trautmann and Max Steitz, then seniors at Tulane University, were spitballing ways to keep their glass out of the trash. For all of its imbibing, New Orleans didn’t offer curbside glass recycling. For Ms. Trautmann and Mr. Steitz, this wasn’t just galling, but a missed opportunity. “We underestimated how much demand there was,” Mr. Steitz, 27, said. CNN —This piece contains mild spoilers for the Netflix series “Ripley” and a scene in the movie “Civil War.”Are we finally ready to take another look at why we love to hate sociopaths so much? But his rendition of Ripley – highly capable, chameleonic, but never what you’d call charming — represents a refreshing take on one of the most famous sociopaths in literature and film. Gagne feels Hollywood’s nearly always gotten it wrong with portrayals of sociopaths, reducing them to a collection of cartoonish, villainous traits. In fact, I found one of film’s most recent sociopaths to be singularly chilling because of his very plausibility. He’s in Alex Garland’s “Civil War,” the polarizing film about a vaguely-sketched conflict set in the modern-day United States.

Rupert Murdoch's The Wall Street Journal made widespread cuts to its DC bureau on Thursday in a restructuring that several insiders called a "bloodbath." They were also, however, expected, since staffers had been told a restructuring was coming in preparation for the installation of the Journal's new Washington coverage chief Damian Paletta, who starts February 5. The new Washington bureau will focus on politics, policy, defense, law, intelligence and national security. The expanded Finance & Economics coverage area will unify our reporting on the macroeconomy, global economic trends, monetary policy, credit and banking, and financial markets. Brent Kendall, the law bureau chief, will take on the expanded role of Justice, Judiciary and Law Editor.

For instance, the U.S. has blocked shipments of cotton coming from China, a top manufacturer of popular clothing brands, because it was produced by forced or prison labor. While prison labor seeps into the supply chains of some companies through third-party suppliers without them knowing, others buy direct. Cargill acknowledged buying goods from prison farms in Tennessee, Arkansas and Ohio, saying they constituted only a small fraction of the company’s overall volume. For instance, about a dozen state prison farms, including operations in Texas, Virginia, Kentucky and Montana, have sold more than $60 million worth of cattle since 2018. “What for?”FOLLOWING THE MONEYThe business of prison labor is so vast and convoluted that tracing the money can be challenging.

TV flags are flying at half-staff today, with the news that Matthew Perry died on Saturday. The show’s continuing ubiquity makes Perry’s death more galling somehow — don’t certain stars achieve immortality through streaming and syndication? Perry was not the kind of actor who disappeared into a role but rather where the role disappeared into him. This is never more clear than in “The West Wing,” where Perry appears in three episodes as Joe Quincy, a clever lawyer. His arc on “West Wing” aired right around the same time as the final few episodes of “Friends,” and it modeled the kind of role we’d frequently see him in after Chandler: a fascinating, intelligent, perhaps lovable adversary.

The Botched Hunt for the Gilgo Beach Killer
  + stars: | 2023-10-19 | by ( Robert Kolker | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
This summer, after 13 years, the police finally made an arrest in the Gilgo Beach murders. When I was reporting “Lost Girls,” my 2013 book about the case and victims, the police were largely silent. Since July, I’ve conducted interviews with people close to the Gilgo case during every chapter of its bizarre 13-year timeline. (Several sources asked for anonymity, concerned that public statements by insiders might undercut the case against Heuermann before the trial.) From the moment those women were found at Gilgo Beach, the law-enforcement culture of Suffolk County seemed so preternaturally ill suited to handle this case that a killer was allowed to roam free.

The one job AI should actually replace: CEOs

The only job that seems to be safe from the rise of ChatGPT and other AI tech is, oddly enough, the most expensive and easily automated role: CEO. Let's replace our CEOs with AI. Actually, AI is too advanced for that job, all you need is a Fisher Price tape recorder loaded up with a bad bunch of ideas." What better way can we hold a chief executive accountable than making sure they actually execute? Or perhaps the chief executives need to be far more afraid of losing their jobs to equally capable robots.

Lebanon and Israel have two big features in common: They are really small in geography and incredibly diverse in population — religiously diverse, ethnically diverse, politically diverse, linguistically diverse, educationally diverse. Over the last two decades, though, Lebanon’s pro-Iranian Shiite militia, Hezbollah, whose name means “the party of God,” trashed that principle. It used its superiority in arms and warfighters, and the backing of Iran, to impose its authority on all the other Lebanese parties and sects. This was all done while trying to neuter the Supreme Court’s ability to stop any of it. This sort of resource/power grab is unprecedented in Israeli politics, and it is all the more galling when you consider that it is being done, in part, by ultra-Orthodox parties whose members pay the least amount of taxes and serve the least in the military.

Some AI models that compete against Stack Overflow were partly trained on the company's data. Online communities, like Stack Overflow and Wikipedia, thrived as hubs for experts and curious browsers to come together and share information freely. In 2021, Prosus, a major backer of Chinese tech giant Tencent, bought Stack Overflow for $1.8 billion. However, Nat Friedman, the CEO of Github through 2021, expects tech companies to pay for training data in the future. It echoes 1,000 years of antisemitic conspiracy theories that Jews are responsible for, yet somehow immune to, plagues and disease – beliefs that led to actual Jews being murdered by angry mobs. No, of course, we’re in Washington, DC, where politics dictates how antisemitism is, or isn’t, tolerated by those with something to gain from it. Really, it was only a matter of time before RFK Jr. stumbled into overt antisemitism.
