Socialites are playing chess on "The Real Housewives of New York City." In 1990, according to the US Chess Federation, only 4% of chess players were women. Out in the world, chess' resurgence has been accompanied by a wave of new clubs and events. I made a pilgrimage to the Marshall Chess Club, a 109-year-old institution in Greenwich Village. The following evening, I went to an East Village bar and found a very different scene at Club Chess.

Michael Showalter kept acting long after he realized he didn't want to do it anymore — mostly because he needed to eat. Showalter got his start in college doing sketch comedy as a member of The State (formerly The New Group). Fast forward roughly two decades and Showalter has found himself right where he was always meant to be. Shares of Linde fell on Thursday after the industrial gas giant reported mixed first-quarter results and its guidance left some investors wanting more. We're not sure of the rationale for excluding it but that explains why we're not fretting about Linde's lack of guidance raise. Guidance For the second quarter, Linde projects adjusted EPS between $3.70 and $3.80, which implies 5% to 7% year-over-year growth, excluding currency impacts. As always with Linde, the midpoint of the guidance assumes no economic improvement. Central bankers chose to keep interest rates steady, and Powell said a rate hike was "unlikely." Fed officials chose to keep interest rates unchanged, in line with the market's expectations. Investors have been fretting over higher interest rates as inflation came in hotter-than-expected throughout the first quarter. The odds of a Fed rate hike in June are less than 1%. Calling that out in the first paragraph is tantamount to saying that interest rate cuts are not coming soon."

How TikTok Changed Us

In the coming days, Congress may advance a bill to ban TikTok or force its sale to an American company. A few schools have removed bathroom mirrors because so many students were leaving class to film TikTok videos there. For 14 percent of American adults, TikTok is a regular news source, up from 3 percent in 2020. People who don’t have traditional backgrounds in journalism, akin to bloggers for the TikTok era, aggregate and share information in snappy videos. Organizations including The New York Times are also making short-form videos in which reporters talk to the camera about their stories, the TikTok way.

Signs that the conflict between the two countries won't escalate any further have calmed the market's nerves, XTB research director Kathleen Brooks said on Monday. "The dollar opened the week fairly muted and US bond yields are slightly higher, suggesting that there was no flight to safe havens." Anyone who's been following markets for the past two years won't be surprised at traders' muted reaction to the latest tensions in the Middle East.

Treasury yields fall as investors weigh state of economy

The 2-year Treasury yield was last at 4.9200% after falling by more than four basis points. U.S. Treasury yields declined on Friday as investors considered the state of the economy after the release of inflation data and weighed the path ahead for interest rates. Investors considered the state of the economy after key economic data releases, and assessed what this could mean for upcoming monetary policy decisions from the Federal Reserve. Investors have been fretting about what sticky inflation could mean for interest rate cuts that are expected to take place later this year. Some investors are also considering the possibility of there being no rate cuts at all this year.

Alphabet 's cloud event Tuesday could provide a much needed sentiment lift to investors fretting about the search giant's artificial intelligence potential, according to some Wall Street analysts. "With unique AI assets, including proprietary infrastructure and an advanced LLM model, we believe Google cloud has an opportunity to differentiate its cloud offering, improving market share and street sentiment," wrote Bank of America's Justin Post. This week's event, however, could mark a turnaround in the right direction and help lift sentiment toward the company's AI developments. Morgan Stanley's Brian Nowak also highlighted the event as one of five potential catalysts for the stock through the beginning of June. The firm is on the lookout for more examples of how the cloud is benefitting from the AI transformation, he said.

Simon Rosenberg was right about the congressional elections of 2022. All the conventional wisdom — the polls, the punditry, the fretting by fellow Democrats — revolved around the expectation of a big red wave and a Democratic wipeout. Democrats would surprise everyone, he said again and again: There would be no red wave. This time, he is predicting that President Biden will defeat Donald J. Trump in November. He even has a Substack newsletter offering insights and daily reassurance to his worried readers — “Hopium Chronicles,” the name taken from what the pollster Nate Silver suggested he was ingesting back in 2022.

Opinion | The Overlooked Truths About Biden’s Age
  + stars: | 2024-03-28 | by ( Frank Bruni | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In terms of optics and in terms of energy, I wish President Biden were younger. And from the casual conversations all around me and the formal polling of voters, I know I’m in robust company. A great many Americans consider his age unideal, and that belief is why there’s no wishing away the focus on it. Even so, aspects of the subject actually get too little consideration, starting with this crushingly obvious and yet frequently overlooked fact: The presidency isn’t a solo mission. And the president of the United States is only as good as the advisers around him, whose selection reflects presidential judgment, not stamina.

The oversupply of Chinese goods in key industries is stoking tensions between the world’s biggest manufacturer and its major trading partners, including the United States and the European Union. From clothes to carsChina’s exports of low-priced goods got a boost after it joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001. “What China exports is advanced production capacity that meets the needs of foreign customers,” Xinhua News Agency wrote. US President Joe Biden recently pledged to investigate whether imports of Chinese vehicles pose a national security threat. “But perhaps more importantly, persistent oversupply and low prices of Chinese goods will add to geopolitical tensions and keep the threat of tariffs and counter-tariffs alive,” she wrote in a recent note.

Read previewA Chinese state media report about rural men struggling to afford exorbitant dowries has triggered backlash online from people who say the bachelors are missing the point. State-run outlet Legal Daily published an article on Monday covering the dating lives of three rural men in their early 30s, who said they can no longer keep up with rising "betrothal prices." Many accounts, who listed themselves as female on their profiles, say men are using the unattainable dowries as an excuse for their undesirability as partners. It's not about the dowries, people sayRising dowries have unsettled Chinese officials already fretting about plummeting national birth and marriage rates. Democrat Tom Suozzi flipped a New York congressional seat blue Tuesday night, narrowing the GOP's already razor-thin majority in the House and boosting the spirits of Democrats fretting about President Joe Biden's strength in the fall elections. A centrist Democrat, Suozzi was seeking to get back the job he had before he left to run, unsuccessfully, for the gubernatorial nomination in 2022. Suozzi also faced an electorate unhappy with Biden in general and, in particular, the influx of immigrants over the border.
