CNN —Carlos Alcaraz led Team Europe to a comeback victory over Team World in the Laver Cup on Sunday, triumphing in both his singles and his doubles matchups. It marked Europe’s fifth win in the Laver Cup and first since 2021. “It’s great, obviously, we came here with a goal, all of us, that is to win the Laver Cup,” said Alcaraz. Alcaraz defeated Taylor Fritz to secure Laver Cup victory for Team Europe. For me, to spend time with these players in Team Europe, it’s a lot of fun.

But this year, men’s tennis has had a different complexion since none of Federer, Nadal or Djokovic has won a grand slam title for the first time since 2002. Whatever comes next is unlikely to mirror the previous era, leaving men’s tennis in an unfamiliar position, shorn of its three biggest icons who transcended the court. Carlos Alcaraz has already won four grand slam titles at the age of 21. “There has to be a real recalibration … because I already see people talking, like, ‘Can Alcaraz catch Djokovic’s grand slam record?’” Rothenberg tells CNN Sport. The cheapest price to attend the Friday night match at Arthur Ashe Stadium is priced at $333 for one ticket, according to TickPick, an online secondary ticket marketplace. On average, fans are paying about $500 for the 7 pm ET match, which is the fifth-most-expensive US Open men’s semifinal on record, a TickPick spokesperson told CNN. Notably, the demand to see the lower-ranked American players is far greater than the matchup that features the No. Prices for Fritz vs. Tiafoe match are 231% more expensive for the cheapest ticket compared to the cheap seats for Sinner’s 3 pm ET match against Britain’s Jack Draper. But until now, Garner hasn’t given a full tour inside her Westside Los Angeles property. She had searched for a home with privacy, but the ones she toured all felt too “grand,” she explained. It’s a house fully in use, too, rather than siloed off — a rarity for a house with multiple pre-teens and teenagers. “I am happy that I feel like we use the space really well, and that the kids are all over the house,” Garner said. Hundreds of people gathered several days ago outside a detention center known as “Zone 7” in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, huddled around lists of prisoners, as they clutched plastic bags filled with meals they had packed for the inmates inside. Eager for information about their detained loved ones, many told remarkably similar stories of sons, daughters and siblings arrested riding motorbikes, walking home from work, coming out of a bakery or stopping by a relative’s house in the days following Venezuela’s disputed presidential election. They described arrests both sweeping and selective. And no one had been told what criminal charge their relatives faced. The Venezuelan government has mounted a furious campaign against anyone challenging the declared results of the vote, unleashing a wave of repression that human rights groups say is unlike anything the country has seen in recent decades.

However, just because baking soda is produced from natural ingredients doesn’t mean it’s safe to ingest without regulation, she added. The primary way baking soda could be helpful for issues such as acid reflux is by neutralizing acid. There has also been some evidence to suggest baking soda may also slow the progression of kidney disease. Fitness studies have typically dosed within the range of 0.2 to 0.5 grams of baking soda per kilogram of body weight — meaning a person weighing about 59 kilograms, or 130 pounds, might use around a tablespoon of baking soda at a minimum. Baking soda supplementation isn’t the only way to alleviate acid-induced health problems.

PARIS — Lighting the Olympic cauldron symbolically opened these Games — and, as much as possible, might have also taken a torch to some awful pandemic memories. The past two Games were staged in bubbles in and around Beijing and Tokyo as Covid was still a factor. And while some athletes have tested positive for Covid during the Paris Games, they have not upended competition. London CNN —Social media has played a big role in fueling the anti-immigration riots engulfing towns and cities in the United Kingdom. Musk later apologized for what he called his “dumbest” ever social media post. The UK government this week vowed to prosecute “online criminality” and has pushed social media companies to take action against the spread of false information. “Social media has put rocket boosters under… not just the misinformation but the encouragement of violence,” UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said Monday. It is unclear that the UK government has the tools to hold social media platforms accountable for their role in the riots.

The only independent observer monitoring the polls in Venezuela said that Sunday’s vote for president did not meet international standards and was undemocratic, raising more questions about the legitimacy of the results. The mission, led by the Carter Center, a pro-democracy organization, said late Tuesday that the election violated Venezuela’s own laws and the government’s failure to release a vote count was a “serious breach of electoral principles.’’The group joined the United States and many other countries that have said Venezuela’s election was marred by irregularities. At least 16 people have been killed in protests that erupted after election officials declared the country’s autocratic leader, President Nicolás Maduro, the winner. The condemnation by the Carter Center, which was the lone independent election monitor the government allowed into Venezuela ahead of the vote, came hours after opposition leaders announced updated election results showing Mr. Maduro received less than a third of votes cast.

Leaders of both sides of Venezuela’s political divide are calling on their followers to take to the streets on Tuesday, in a sign that the crisis set off by this weekend’s disputed presidential election is intensifying. The opposition leader María Corina Machado released data that she said showed Edmundo González, the opposition candidate, winning in a landslide, and summoned her followers to a rally n front of the United Nations offices in Caracas. Jorge Rodríguez, the president of the National Assembly and the head of President Nicolás Maduro’s campaign, also called for massive marches on Tuesday from traditional government strongholds to Miraflores, the presidential palace, after the government declared Mr. Maduro the winner. “Thousands of us will be out on the streets from all four corners of the globe, who came out on the day of the closing campaign to line all the avenues of this capital,” he said on Monday night. “We are going to Miraflores to defend our right to life, our right to freedom, and, above all, our right to choose and to defend the result of the election.”

The United States and countries around the world denounced the results of Venezuela’s presidential election, in which the incumbent, Nicolás Maduro, declared victory in the face of accusations of widespread fraud. Notably, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil and a longtime leader within the region’s leftist movement, released a cautious statement that did not congratulate the president on his win. “The Brazilian government welcomes the peaceful nature of yesterday’s elections in Venezuela and is following the counting process closely,” Mr. Lula said in the statement. “In this context, it awaits the publication by the National Electoral Council of data broken down by polling station, an indispensable step for the transparency, credibility and legitimacy of the election result.”

They arrived at polling stations long before dawn, slept in the streets so they could be the first in line, and then cried as they cast their votes. On Sunday, millions of Venezuelans headed to the ballot box in an election that will determine the fate of the socialist movement that has governed oil-rich, crisis-laden Venezuela for 25 years. By 8 p.m., most polling stations had closed, and the nation waited with apprehension for the country’s electoral body, headed by an acolyte of the ruling party, to announce the result. For the first time in more than a decade, the country’s authoritarian president, Nicolás Maduro, faced a strong challenger, Edmundo González, a previously little-known former diplomat who has the backing of a popular leader, María Corina Machado.

CNN —A large, pink, inflatable man, created by the Chinese contemporary artist Yue Minjun, has divided opinion in a small town in Wales. “The image represents the boredom of Chinese society during the rise of consumerism and economic reform in the early 1990s,” the centuries-old Ruthin School said in a post on Facebook. Yue’s work, in particular his many grinning self-portraits, have become among the most recognizable pieces of Chinese contemporary art. She said the school’s students “love it” are “really quite fond” of the large inflatable man. Another local resident told CNN the inflatable is “a bit odd for an art installation,” while a local barber aid opinions differed, explaining that he had heard both positive and negative reaction.

US Vice President Kamala Harris delivers the keynote speech at the American Federation of Teachers' 88th National Convention in Houston, Texas, on July 25, 2024. Vice President Kamala Harris in a fiery speech Thursday blasted the policy agenda of former President Donald Trump as one of "chaos, fear and hate," after telling members of the nation's second-largest teachers' union that she was running for president because of her first-grade public school teacher and "many people like you." Are you ready to elect the next president of the United States?" "Is because of Mrs. Frances Wilson and so many people like you that I stand before you as vice president of the United States, and because I am running to become president of the United States," she said. The homeland security secretary, Alejandro N. Mayorkas, on Sunday announced the members of a panel to conduct an independent review into security failures after a gunman was able to wound former President Donald J. Trump last weekend at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa. The Secret Service, which answers to Mr. Mayorkas, is facing criticism for its decisions in planning security for the event, and Republican leaders have called for the agency’s director, Kimberly A. Cheatle, to resign. Mr. Mayorkas’s announcement on Sunday promised that the panel would get to the bottom of what went wrong and what changes the Secret Service should make to protect the country’s leaders. The panel — described by Mr. Mayorkas as bipartisan — that will be conducting the 45-day review will be made up of Janet Napolitano, a former homeland security secretary; Frances Townsend, a former homeland security adviser to President George W. Bush; Mark Filip, a former federal judge and a deputy attorney general under Mr. Bush; and David Mitchell, a former secretary of the Delaware Department of Public Safety and Homeland Security. Mr. Mayorkas said he could invite additional experts to join the panel in the coming days.

Now, a new study has found those who experience more gratitude also have a lower risk of dying. The researchers used data from the Nurses’ Health Study, which included nearly 50,000 women between ages 69 and 96 who completed a six-item gratitude questionnaire in 2016. The researchers controlled for factors such as psychological well-being, health issues and other demographics including social and religious participation. There’s no clear consensus on how often one should practice gratitude, Simon-Thomas said. Having more gratitude has also been linked to being more optimistic in general, and people who express higher levels of gratitude tend to look more for the good in life, Watkins added.

Foreign law enforcement officers began arriving in Haiti on Tuesday, more than year and a half after the prime minister there issued a plea to other countries for help to stop the rampant gang violence that has upended the Caribbean nation. Footage shared on social media showed dozens of armed men in military fatigues filing out of a Kenya Airways plane at Haiti’s Toussaint Louverture International Airport in the capital, Port-au-Prince. The officers are part of a deployment of police officers from eight nations who will fan out across the capital in an effort to wrest control of the city from dozens of armed groups that have attacked police stations, freed prisoners and killed with impunity. Since the appeal for international help went out in October 2022, more than 7,500 people have been killed by violence — more than 2,500 people so far this year alone, the United Nations said.
