Matt Mills Mcknight | ReutersRENTON, Wash. — Cash-strapped Boeing is facing mounting costs from an ongoing machinist strike as workers push for higher pay. The financial cost of the strike on Boeing depends on how long it lasts, though ratings agencies have warned that the company could face a downgrade if it drags on too long. Boeing 737 Max planes sit at the airport in Renton, Washington. Boeing Machinists union members count votes to accept or reject a proposed contract between Boeing and union leaders and whether or not to strike if the contract is rejected, at the Aerospace Machinists Union Hall in Seattle, Washington, on September 12, 2024. Boeing's most recent offer included 25% general wage increases over a four-year deal and was endorsed by the machinists union, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 751.

The second sign was that Nasrallah’s address – his first since two waves of attacks detonated thousands of Hezbollah wireless devices earlier this week – was very possibly pre-recorded. The leader of the powerful militant group has not delivered a speech in person since the start of Lebanon’s last all-out war with Israel in 2006. In his speech last month, for example, Nasrallah referenced two sonic booms caused by Israeli jets that had broken the sound barrier over Beirut. The roar reverberated throughout the city yet the Beirut-based militant leader neither flinched nor referenced the incident during his speech. Israel’s fighter jets seemed intent to underscore the gains of Tuesday and Wednesday’s attacks on Hezbollah’s wireless devices: the group had been driven deeper underground.

New York Democrats offered a wide array of excuses for their disastrous 2022 midterms, when Republicans flipped four seats outside New York City on their way to winning a narrow US House majority. Now, less than two months out from the 2024 general election, the state party, its campaign season allies, chastened candidates and Gov. D’Esposito is one of five New York GOP freshmen facing an onslaught from Democrats determined to claw back suburban voters. “New York is the reason Democrats lost the House in 2022,” said Pamela Shifman, president of the Democracy Alliance, a liberal group spending big in New York this year. “There’s more focus than there was the last couple cycles, both from the state party, but also obviously the national committees,” the strategist said.

The Iran-backed militant group said the wireless devices began to explode around 3:30 p.m. local time in a targeted Israeli attack on Hezbollah operatives. Experts say the explosions, unprecedented in their scale and nature, underscore Hezbollah’s vulnerability as its communication network was compromised to deadly effect. CNN could not geolocate the image, but has verified it was published Tuesday, the same day as the explosions. Hostilities are at an all-time high between Israel and Hezbollah following Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel. I grew up working class and learned good work ethic from my parents. The novelty of cap erasers and Airheads from the school store wore off fast, and money didn't have much luster. In our part of Wisconsin, with its German roots and farm families, work ethic is our moral code. What 'good work ethic' means for your financesBecause it's in my DNA, I can't help but see a strong work ethic as a virtue. What I wish I'd learned about money earlierI'll always be grateful for the work ethic I learned from my parents ... and I wish I'd gotten the nuances of money a bit earlier in life.

But after visiting 17 countries, there's one little luxury I can't go without when flying: checking a bag. I find that my carry-on bag is practically tied to me while I'm in the airport, which can become annoying. Avoiding this anxiety-inducing exercise and not rushing to board is a little luxury worth the price of checking a bag. Opting for a large checked bag means I can pack everything I want to bring on my tripI can pack tons of different outfits in my checked bag. But if you ask me, checking a bag is a relatively easy way to have a better travel experience.

Her friends also didn't lose out on any money when she decided to have a solo bachelorette trip since they had not put deposits down anywhere before Torres changed her mind. She said she was apprehensive about spending time alone before she went on the trip, as the bachelorette marked her first solo vacation. Read previewFormer President Donald Trump said that if he's elected, he'd cut taxes on Social Security benefits for older Americans — but the policy risks shrinking those funds sooner than expected. "People on Social Security are being killed, and one of the things I'm doing is no tax for seniors on Social Security, and I'll get it done quickly." Trump had previously pitched his plan to eliminate taxes on Social Security, writing on his social-media platform Truth Social on July 31: "SENIORS SHOULD NOT PAY TAX ON SOCIAL SECURITY!" Trump has vowed not to cut Social SecurityTrump has previously taken a strong position on Social Security — one at odds with many members of his own party who have faced criticism from Democrats for calling for Social Security cuts. For example, Trump said in January 2023 that "under no circumstances should Republicans vote to cut a single penny from Medicare or Social Security."

Disney may have a parks problem
  + stars: | 2024-08-07 | by ( Ramishah Maruf | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
New York CNN —Disney Parks are the latest business to face slowing consumer demand in the face of higher prices. Disney’s parks business underperformed expectations and profit fell somewhat last quarter. It’s not just Disney that’s seeing a pullback — Bank of America Institute reported credit card transactions on travel ticked down in June. Disney’s domestic parks and international parks and cruises, though, are seeing different results: Disney’s international parks had increases in attendance and more rooms booked. The company noted that attendance at the parks was comparable to this time last year and spending per guest was up.

De-dollarization is nothing but a myth — and it could backfire on countries like Russia and China. That's according to Jeffrey Christian, a commodities expert who thinks dollar dominance isn't going away anytime soon. He says countries phasing out the greenback also could face consequences, like liquidity issues and slow growth. AdvertisementDe-dollarization is probably a fad — and countries trying to stage a global shift away from the dollar may soon find that the movement will backfire. Despite the ongoing movement, dollar dominance isn't probably going away, given how pervasive the greenback is in financial markets, he told Business Insider in an interview.

But these firms are slowly losing their appeal as China’s economy faces headwinds including a property crisis, declining foreign investment and slumping consumption. I easily recall the lawyer saying he could change my name as part of the divorce proceedings. While my husband and I didn't choose to remain married, my son and I were still a family. I kept my married name for years until my ex-husband started dating a woman with a very similar name as me. Except to me, going back to that name felt like I was going backward in terms of my life's evolution. But the name change was much bigger than updating my records and getting a new Social Security card.

CNN —When you’re trying to address mental health symptoms, simply the belief that you can be helped may be an important factor. Symptoms of nine mental health disorders substantially improved under placebo treatment, according to a new review of 90 randomized controlled trials — known as a meta-analysis — totaling 9,985 adult participants largely in their 30s and 40s. “This is the most comprehensive study of placebo effects in psychiatry.”The results are also important for patient treatment, Bschor said. But for disorders that didn’t see as much improvement with placebos — such as OCD or schizophrenia, which is a psychotic disorder — medication may be more necessary. Improvement in absence of medicationThat mental health symptoms improved with placebo treatment may be due to a few potential influences, experts said.

It also reflects that there's money in the system — but Chinese consumers are just really not that keen on dropping their hard-earned cash at Starbucks or Gucci.
