☆ Troubling market internals warrant buying some portfolio protection — Here's how

As equity markets print new all-time highs and the CBOE Volatility Index prints 52-week lows, this should be considered as a bullish outlook by all accounts. However, if we look under the hood, the internals during this rally concern me and in my opinion, warrants buying some protection on these all-time highs. If we look at the Sector Rotation RRG Chart, we see that over the past five weeks, the rally in the S & P 500 has been led by utilities, energy and staples. With materials and industrials also rolling over, we simply lack the confidence to call a strong bull market on the recent all-time highs. I'm going out to July and buying the $530 puts on the SPDR S & P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) for $7.35, which is only 1.3% of the SPY's value to buy over 2 months of protection.

☆ Tiny plastic shards found in human testicles, study says

CNN —Human testicles contain microplastics and nanoplastics at levels three times higher than animal testes and human placentas, a new small study found. “They look like little shards, tiny broken bits from very, very old plastics,” said Campen, a regents’ professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Researchers expected to find more plastic shards in the testicles of older men in the study, but that wasn’t the case, Campen said. “In testes, the levels of plastic was three times as much as we saw in placentas,” Campen said. In studies of pregnant mice, researchers have found plastic chemicals in the brain, heart, liver, kidney and lungs of the developing fetus 24 hours after the pregnant mother ingested or breathed in plastic particles.

Nvidia's earnings release is front and center this week as the beloved chipmaker should determine the short-term direction of U.S. equities. Led by the $2.3 trillion behemoth Nvidia (NVDA) , semiconductors have been on fire in 2024 after a dramatic outperformance in 2023. I want to implement a hedge using the popular VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) which has a near 21% weighting to Nvidia. The largest ETF to hold NVDA is the SPDR S & P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) , with a 5.1% allocation or about $28 billion in market value. It can (and has) propel NVDA higher in a faster manner, but it also can amplify a move lower (if that is possible for the AI darling, NVDA).

A century ago, the timber-and-iron tower had supported a tram carrying precious salt across the Inyo Mountains that had been mined from a remote valley in the California desert. More recently, it stood as an artifact in the Saline Valley, and it marked the edge of a hiking trail through the sun-baked wilderness. But a visitor to the Death Valley National Park in California brought the 113-year-old structure down on April 19 when it was used in an effort to pull a pickup truck out of the mud, prompting the National Park Service to investigate who was responsible for the damage. The service’s request for information from the public elicited dozens of calls and messages, a video uploaded to YouTube, and finally a confession. A park visitor said that the damage “was done during a time of desperation while being deeply stuck in mud” and had taken full responsibility, according to a Park Service update provided on Thursday.

Let's take a look at how gold stocks have fared and see how recent price action suggests the uptrend is nowhere near completed. While gold stocks tend to be very much tied to the performance of the underlying commodity, there will often be periods of dislocation, where gold and gold miners appear to be more disconnected. This appears to have occurred in the first quarter, when physical gold was fairly flat, but gold miners were sold off into a February low. The chart of Royal Gold (RGLD) shows that the early breakouts are beginning to occur. Given the strength in the charts of physical gold and gold miners, this group may serve as a compelling opportunity going into the summer months.

By late March, momentum began to slow, and it became clear that it would take some time to see the next bullish pattern. That means there still has not been a successful bearish pattern (big or small) since last October. If the S & P 500 can't hold this latest push to new highs, then a bullish formation like this could be constructed. The bottom line is this: Strong trends are made from both bullish patterns working and bearish patterns failing.

With a business model focused on memberships and rock-bottom prices, Costco (COST) has grown much faster than its peers and commands a significantly higher valuation. Over the past year, COST stock has rallied over 55%, nearly double what the S & P 500 returned over the same period. Additionally, with such a high-priced stock and options premiums elevated with earnings on deck in two weeks, we have to get creative to structure a trade to seek bearish exposure heading into earnings. I'm looking out to the June 7 th weekly expiration and buying a $700/730/775 broken wing put butterfly for $9.72 debit.

Across all those ways of crunching the numbers, about 85% showed that those who have and use the internet report greater well-being that those who do not, according to the research. Other research has shown that the connection between mobile internet use and well-being is complex and varies among individuals, he added. “Our results might then simply indicate that individuals with more money, access to healthcare, etc, report greater well-being,” Vuorre said in an email. The internet is used for a wide variety of things — including online banking, shopping, finding services, reading the news and cyberbullying — and those different uses will have different effects on well-being, Vuorre said.

I first wrote about Celsius here on Jan 17 as the stock was gearing up to break through the $63 and $69 resistance levels. The fundamental case Even so, last week's Q1 earnings report was met with some confusion. The chart below shows CELH quarterly revenue growth with the most recent quarter showing a slight lower-high based on that $355 million top line figure.

The day after U.K. police charged three men with assisting Hong Kong’s intelligence service, China’s ambassador to Britain was summoned for an official reprimand by the British foreign ministry in the latest sign of growing tension between London and Beijing. The British government said that it had called the ambassador, Zheng Zeguang, to its Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office after the three men appeared in court on Monday. The Foreign Office said in a statement that it had been “unequivocal in setting out that the recent pattern of behavior directed by China against the U.K.” was not acceptable. It cited cyberattacks, alleged espionage and the issuing of bounties for information leading to the prosecution of dissidents who fled Hong Kong after its crackdown on the pro-democracy movement and resettled in Britain. The three men who appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday have been charged with gathering intelligence for Hong Kong, a former British colony which is a special administrative region of China, and of forcing entry into a U.K. residential address.
