London CNN —Against the backdrop of a challenging economic outlook for many brands — big and small — the 40th anniversary of London Fashion Week last week was certainly a time for reflection. Even Carly Marks, founder of avant-garde New York label Puppets and Puppets, chose London this season. But all eyes were on Burberry, undoubtedly the biggest brand on the London Fashion Week schedule, yet one that has been battling against sharply declining profits. And these designers aren’t using just any old jet — they’re purposefully picking Whitby jet, which is widely considered the gold standard of jewelry-ready jet. And “Whitby jet is definitely in the running for the best jet in the world,” explained Steele, who also co-owns Ebor Jetworks, an historic jet workshop and retail shop in the town. Whitby jet is renowned for being pitch-black in color and tough in temperament. Generally speaking, Whitby jet won’t crack or fade over time, like less hearty, no-name jets are wont to do. “There’s not enough jet out there and you can’t buy big pieces of jet” said Steele.

CNN —Many celebrities will be well-versed in the power of the statement heel to complete a red carpet look, but at the Tony Awards on Sunday night in New York, Brooke Shields stole the spotlight in a statement flat. Founded in Boulder, Colorado by three friends in 2002, Crocs were an immediate success when they first hit the market. The designer took on the position following Karl Lagerfeld’s death in 2019 after working alongside him at Chanel for decades. A new frontier has opened in fashion’s fur wars, as protesters targeted the homes of more than a dozen employees of Marc Jacobs in recent months, using signs, noisemakers and fake blood in an effort to force the designer to officially renounce the use of fur in his collections. Over the weekend, Mr. Jacobs accused the protesters of “bullying” in a statement on Instagram, but averred: His brand “does not work in, use or sell fur, nor will we in the future.” He also emphasized that he had not used fur in any of his own brand’s collections since 2018. “This organization has made it clear that they will not stop their violence toward Marc Jacobs unless they get the statement they want,” Mr. Jacobs wrote. “While I don’t condone the behavior of this organization, I will always do what I can to protect, honor and respect the lives and well-being of the people I work with.”The organization referenced by Mr. Jacobs is the Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade, or CAFT, a group that selects targets and disseminates information and resources to anti-fur activists on the ground.

In “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” he is brooding, combative and ambitious, sure — but we are equally encouraged to root for him. Despite Dietrich’s protestations, the creators of “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” seem to side with their muse. Parisian fashion in the 1970s was, “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” suggests, a scene broadly gatekept by a handful of squabbling men. "Becoming Karl Lagerfeld" intends to plunge the viewer into the heart of 1970s Paris, Monaco and Rome, to "follow the formidable blossoming of this complex and iconic personality," say the show notes. “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” is, stylistically, a luxurious tribute to ‘70s flair: gorgeous to look at and offering an aggressively humanized look at some of fashion’s biggest names.

As protests over the war in Gaza unfolded blocks away, last week’s Met Gala was largely devoid of political statements on the red carpet. At least, it is on TikTok, the social media platform that was a sponsor of the Met event. Blockout 2024, also referred to as Operation Blockout or Celebrity Block Party, targets high-profile figures who participants feel are not using their profiles and platforms to speak out about the Israel-Hamas war and wider humanitarian crises. The criticism began on May 6. when Haley Kalil (@haleyybaylee on social media), an influencer who was a host on E! News before the event, posted a TikTok video of herself wearing a lavish 18th-century-style floral gown and headdress with audio from Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film “Marie Antoinette,” in which Kirsten Dunst proclaims, “Let them eat cake!”

Less than a day before celebrities were set to arrive at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the Met Gala, the union representing employees of Vogue and other Condé Nast publications indicated that its members were ready to walk off the job on Monday over contract negotiations, potentially snarling the biggest night of the year for the magazine and its editor in chief, Anna Wintour. In a vocal in-person and social media campaign leading up to the event, which is co-hosted by Ms. Wintour and costs $75,000 per person, the Condé Nast Union pledged to continue to take action as needed to bring the publisher to the bargaining table. In a post on X, the union warned on Saturday night that management could “meet us at the table or meet us at the Met on Monday.”The threat of a protest at what is sometimes called “fashion’s biggest night out” comes after over a year of bargaining for union members to create their first contract. In addition to establishing just cause as the basis for firing employees, the organizers are hoping to avoid layoffs proposed in November that they said would affect 17 percent of union members, or nearly 100 employees.

Curiosity around how guests would interpret this year’s “Garden of Time” theme was quickly answered with a flurry of florals, vintage, leather, fascinators and classic tuxedoes at this year’s Met Gala, fashion’s biggest night held on the first Monday in May. Celebrities, executives, musicians, politicians and more showed off every angle of every look for photographers and fans. Guests sashayed down an off-white carpet dotted with teal borders and posed in front of backdrops of vegetation and flora, creating an ethereal quality to the evening’s festivitiee.

There are certain things the fashion industry will always love: The young and beautiful. By those metrics, Dan Colen is giving fashion a lot to love right now. A blue-chip artist represented by the mega-gallery Gagosian, he founded a farm called Sky High that donates 100 percent of its food to local pantries in upstate New York. Among the infamous work from that time were the “hamster nests” Mr. Colen created with Dash Snow. Snow ejaculated on newspapers while Ryan McGinley photographed the whole scene, including Mr. Colen’s oft-mentioned genitals.

Who gets to buy a Birkin bag?
  + stars: | 2024-04-08 | by ( Joan Kennedy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
(CNN) — It’s so hard to get your hands on an Hermès Birkin bag that it should be illegal. Hermès’ ultra-exclusive positioning has meant Birkin sales have continued to overperform in the market even as most other luxury brands see demand slowing from post-pandemic highs. A scarcity-driven distribution model has helped drive desire for Birkins, as well as more broadly fuel Hermès’ business. Saroyan Humphrey/WWD/Getty ImagesThe lawsuit alleges shoppers are required to buy ancillary products (items like scarves, pillows or shoes) before being allowed to purchase a Birkin handbag. Presumably, the plaintiffs could buy a Birkin from The RealReal even if they can’t from Hermès directly.

Lucien Pellat-Finet, the French fashion designer whose brash, irreverent and unapologetically expensive sweaters earned him the nickname King of Cashmere, died on Feb. 26 in Trancoso, Brazil, where he had owned a home for more two decades. A niece, Camille Dauchez, said that Mr. Pellat-Finet (pronounced pell-ah fee-NAY), who had Parkinson’s disease, died in a swimming accident. Sometimes, skulls were additionally tweaked with details like a stuck-out tongue, aviator sunglasses or a tilted sailor’s hat. They came in neutral colors like black and navy as well as vivid shades of orange, pink, green and camouflage prints. Instead of a traditional sweater’s somewhat boxy cut and ribbed cuffs at the arms and waistband, a Lucien Pellat-Finet pullover was essentially a luxe T-shirt, as the makeup artist Tom Pecheux put it, in “the shape of Fruit of the Loom.”

The discombobulating outfit was, in fact, the opening look of Vivienne Westwood’s Fall-Winter 2024 show in Paris — a collection that has proved divisive online. “Vivienne Westwood will be turning in her grave watching Sam Smith in this get up,” wrote one disgruntled fan on X. The 1990s era of Vivienne Westwood was defined by shape and silhouette, as demonstrated here with Linda Evangelista walking the Fall-Winter 1995 show in Paris. On TikTok #cowboycore has 11.4 million views and counting, where users video themselves styling a wide-brimmed rancher cap or, as in one video, pairing vintage leather chaps with a belted trench coat. Cowboy boots, for one, were plucked from their country context and thrust onto the urban streets of metropolitan cities years ago.
