In her report, "Fashion Transformation 4.0: Beyond Digitalization & Marketing in Fashion Industry," she said that the fashion industry must embrace new technologies in order to survive. "Fashion is a terribly old-fashioned industry," Alies ter Kuile, the cofounder of Fashion Cloud, said. With cloud computing, retailers can avoid overbuying stock — a key driver of fashion's textile-waste problem.

"We got used to hearing about double-digit growth at Gucci," Fflur Roberts, the head of luxury goods at Euromonitor, told Business Insider. "I think of what a fashion editor is wearing — it's not Gucci," Lindsey Solomon, a fashion publicist, told BI. After taking the top spot on the Lyst Index of fashion's hottest brands in 2022, Gucci dropped to number 11 last quarter. "We still believe the Gucci brand's current growth rate, which is 10 times higher than that of the industry, represents a risk going forward," Morningstar's Sokolova wrote in a 2017 note. Gucci relied heavily on China for its growth, but stores — perhaps including this one in China's Hainan Province — have struggled recently.

Artificial intelligence is helping fashion brands understand consumer behaviors and demands. The Business of Fashion and McKinsey said that in a survey they conducted, about 73% of fashion executives said they planned to prioritize generative AI in 2024. AI can be used to improve efficiency and sustainability to both identify trends and create new ones — but it requires careful implementation. Horwitz, alongside her colleague Oliver Zimmer, built the first Google Fashion Trends report, which used machine learning to identify trends in Google search data. "But using generative AI, you can also have it review those patterns.

These distinct designer brands all have something in common: a single parent company named Tapestry, Inc. That parent company has been getting bigger and bigger throughout 2023. "Growth-oriented acquisitions really help to drive the business further, " said Dana Telsey, CEO of Telsey Advisory Group. "New designers can create interest because you can extend your customer base, whether it's extending your customer base older or younger, or extend your customer base globally." The popularity of online shopping has also provoked retailers to pursue mergers that promote expansion online and in stores. As social media creates new avenues for promotion, brands grappling with the high cost of celebrity endorsements are looking to expand their resources through mergers and acquisitions.

Despite these restrictions, Pasricha's designs were proof that zero-waste 3D printing was possible, especially with small designs such as buttons and jewelry.
