The Opinion Video above lays out the unique challenges facing President Biden and Donald Trump when they meet in Atlanta on Thursday for their first 2024 presidential debate. A lot has happened in the four years since they last appeared together on a debate stage, including a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, many more months of a raging pandemic, the overturning of Roe v. Wade, galloping inflation and the outbreak of wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. Indeed, there’s no shortage of matters for the two men to discuss. In the Opinion Video above, we draw on footage of their past performances, in debates as well as on the campaign trail, to show what each candidate needs to do — and what he needs to avoid — to win the day. The stakes are high, and so is the risk of failure.

We spent weeks planning a "cake party" for our other work friends. The general line is that work friendships are good because social connections at work keep people productive and engaged and help them manage stress. On a fundamental level, work friendships aren't the same as friendship friendships. Advertisement"I think we should try to bring our best professional selves to work, but why should we bring our intimate selves to work?" There's space for moderation, though, or even the chance to shed some work friendships for good.

A number of Big Tech companies have laid off staff this year, including Google, Tesla, Apple, and dozens more. Ironically, companies haven't been slowing down on innovation, with many releasing a constant stream of AI updates and product launches. Mark Zuckerberg shared his theory on the first round of industry-wide layoffs in an interview with "Morning Brew Daily" in February. AdvertisementSalesforce CEO and cofounder Mark Benioff also relayed the same sentiment in a letter to employees announcing layoffs in 2023. But for the moment, tech companies don't seem to be slowing down on AI advancement.

Washington CNN —US women’s soccer legend Alex Morgan will not be on the team’s roster for the Olympic Games next month in Paris, a symbol of the changing of the guard going on inside the women’s national team. The 22-player roster, which includes 18 players going to Paris and four alternates, includes only eight players from the 2020 Olympics, which were held in 2021 in Tokyo, and 10 members of the 2023 World Cup team. She acknowledged the roster for Paris will have less experienced players than previous tournaments with an eye toward development. “I’m not looking backwards, we have to look forward with a group of players that have put that World Cup behind them. And we’re very much looking forward to sort of building on the work, you know, post-the World Cup.

London CNN —Nvidia, Nvidia, Nvidia. Nvidia’s stock bounced back Tuesday, yet investors have been reminded of a potentially bubble-bursting truth: You can fly too close to the sun. For context, it took Warren Buffett about 60 years to build Berkshire Hathaway into a nearly trillion dollar company. But typical volatility can have seismic repercussions when it comes to a stock as all-consuming as Nvidia. Analysts at The Carlyle Group say that while artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the world around us, the Nvidia stock bubble will eventually burst.

Nvidia had some strong moves in the days after its 10-for-1 stock split traded in the market on June 10. Tuesday brought weaker-than-expected May retail sales , which the stock market took in stride, perhaps on the view that softness helps the view that the Federal Reserve will indeed cut interest rates later this year. Ultimately, the economic readings this past week signal that while U.S. growth remains resilient, things are slowing, which is an ideal setup for stock market bulls. The Fed's favorite inflation gauge and the tail end of earning season will be drivers of the market in the week ahead. How the vodka soda became 'gay water'
  + stars: | 2024-06-22 | by ( Alex Harring | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +11 min
The combination of soda water and vodka has long been a fixture of boozy LGBTQ+ life, particularly among gay men. One of those came from Houston-based lawyer Jeff Watters, who called the vodka soda the "gay water" of the nighttime in a post on X. Retail is also central to the business for Gay Water, a startup offering canned cocktail variations of vodka soda. The former's vodka soda citrus is 100 calories per can, while Gay Water contains 80. The Gay Bar Shop, a specialty retailer, sells an 11-ounce, $49 candle that smells like a vodka soda with a lime garnish.

My friend R. once went a step further. Call them the “medium friends.”As an example, R. told me about a certain friend. R. simply did not feel as connected to this friend as he once did. And so, without malevolence or even conscious intent, he shuffled her down in his personal friend deck. But we’re just not that kind of friend.

Do bans apply only to classrooms, or also to hallways, bathrooms and cafeterias, where students are much more likely to be absorbed in TikTok or text messages? Do teachers have the freedom to override bans if phones are being used as part of a lesson? Should school districts purchase devices to lock or hide phones? Yet some districts with a comprehensive policy have had success, overcoming resistance and seeing a change in student behavior.

The credit card giant American Express has acquired Tock, a restaurant reservation and event management company, from the digital commerce platform Squarespace for $400 million, American Express said on Friday. The purchase of the reservation system in an all-cash deal shows that American Express is continuing its pursuit of the market for dining-related services, especially after its acquisition in 2019 of Resy, a rival of Tock, which is based in Chicago. The credit card company is acting on insights that its customers are spending prodigiously on eating out, it said in a statement. Restaurants were a growing spending category for American Express cardholders, reaching a “high watermark” of $100 billion in transactions in 2023, Howard Grosfield, president of the U.S. consumer services division, said in an interview on Friday. “The passion and interest in dining and dining-related experiences just continues to grow,” Mr. Grosfield said.

Emily KrivogradAt the end of the day, I wouldn't go out of my way to visit CosMc's. None of the menu items seemed like a particularly great value, either, considering I can get something I already know I enjoy from a similar chain for about the same price. CosMc's is set to open 10 locations by the end of 2024, but so far, the chain hasn't even reached half that number. Even so, CosMc's still has a long way to go before it builds a loyal fan base like McDonald's or Starbucks have. But I'll probably just stick to waiting in line at Starbucks — and maybe return to CosMc's for some McPops.

In today's big story, we're looking at why the rise of "quiet vacationing" shows the depressing state of America's work culture . If you're unfamiliar with the distinction, let me introduce you to a new workplace phrase: quiet vacationing . But Business Insider's Emily Stewart argues workers feeling too stressed to fully take time off is a sad example of America's work culture. The irony is that quiet vacationing could arguably put you in a worse position for your job these days.

Now people are taking full-blown holidays while on the job as part of a trend that's been called "quiet vacationing." It's a stark reminder of how broken American work culture is, just in time for summer. Pretending to work when you're not or acting like you're putting in more hours than you do is not a new phenomenon. If you're quiet vacationing and your boss doesn't know, good for you, I guess. Regardless of how up front (or not) employees are, at the end of the day, American work culture is the bad guy here.

CNN —Obesity isn’t just a matter of food and exercise — it may be in your genetic code, according to new research. In this study, however, we found a clear genetic trigger for obesity,” said lead study author Dr. Mattia Frontini, British Heart Foundation senior fellow and an associate professor in cellular biology at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, in an email. Researchers used data from the UK Biobank, a large biomedical database and research resource that follows people long term, according to the study published Thursday in the journal Med. Women with the gene mutation weighed an extra 4.6 kilograms (10.14 pounds), and men with the variant weighed an extra 2.4 kilograms (5.29 pounds), according to the study. Research into genetic factors and potential treatments is still underway, but Scherer said the current best approach to medical treatment of obesity is GLP-1 medications.
