Before this week's downside price gap, it's worth noting that Nike was testing a major resistance level into last week. To add to this "confluence of resistance," we can also see the 200-day moving average looming large, currently sitting just above $91. The weekly chart can provide some additional context as to what the recent upswing means relative to the long-term trend for Nike. The long-term trend has been decidedly negative for NKE, with price remaining below the 150-week moving average since Q2 2022. Nike also sits below a downward-sloping 40-week moving average, which is essentially the same as the 200-day moving average on the daily chart.

The Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) was the worst performing sector ETF in September. The XLE ETF (and many of its holdings) has been trying to etch out a bottom for a number of weeks, and the charts we're reviewing today suggest that momentum finally could be turning positive. XLE has been making lower lows and lower highs since peaking in March. Both prior times, eventually logging a higher low gave XLE the firepower it needed to finally punch through a key downtrend line. Recently, the higher lows have been marginal, but considering that we haven't seen a material lower low in nearly five years, it's noteworthy.

Before we get started, it's important to point out that I believe that broader equity markets remain in a secular bull market with global central banks' easing monetary policy amid a backdrop of a boom in artificial intelligence that carries equity markets significantly higher in coming quarters. But the key in my opinion was that real interest rates were going higher. The way I'm defining 'real interest rates' is the prevailing nominal yield on a bond, the 10-year Treasury in this example, adjusted by the expected 10-year inflation level. Put simply, real interest rates are how much you actually earn on a fixed income investment after adjusting for inflation. So my outlook is that gold will continue to rally alongside equity markets.

The Chinese stock market just had its best single day in more than a decade. It's also the last trading day of the week in China due to the Golden Week holiday. Against this backdrop, Roth MKM's JC O'Hara highlighted one S & P 500 sector that might benefit the most from a rebound in China's economy: materials. Some materials stocks highlighted by O'Hara as potential winners, at least based on their price charts alone, are O-I Glass , Corteva and Freeport-McMoRan . To be sure, investors should tread carefully in materials, O'Hara said.

Crypto stocks Coinbase slid 5% and MicroStrategy fell 2%. Bitcoin and crypto stocks retreated on the final trading day of September, following a rally last week, but are still poised to post a positive month. The combined net buying volume of U.S. bitcoin ETFs last week (16,774 BTC) exceeded a typical one-month supply of newly mined bitcoin (13,500), according to Bitwise-owned ETC Group. For the month, bitcoin is on pace to finish its strongest September ever with an 8% gain and its second positive September – historically the cryptocurrency's weakest month – in a row. The market is heading into a seasonally strong quarter for crypto and risk assets broadly.

Analysts are warning that Coinbase could be entering a down trend after the stock scored a six-day-long advance. In early trading Wednesday, Coinbase rose as much as 1.3%, paving the way for what may be its seventh straight gain. "Coinbase looks very toppy to me as the recent bounce out of the oversold condition looks to be stalling out," Wolfe Research macro strategist Rob Ginsberg told CNBC. Lau also cited muted trading volume on crypto exchanges and pressure on subscription and services revenue due to the declining interest rate outlook. But cryptocurrency "trading volume could jump" when interest rates move even lower and if bitcoin again challenges its all-time high, Lau noted.

Not surprisingly, the news has given a jolt to the most liquid Chinese ETF today, as well. The iShares China Large Cap ETF (FXI) has been trading even higher than that so far on Tuesday. The ETF was trading considerably higher in pre-market trading hours and opened a whopping 6% higher from the prior day's close. And that's exactly why we need to look beyond the last few months to a get true sense of its trend. And at that point, the ETF would be hitting its highest level since early 2022.

In a note to clients, Slok issued a more positive outlook on the US job market, even as hiring has slowed this year. "It is inconsistent to say that the incoming economic data is strong but the labor market is weakening," Slok wrote. AdvertisementHowever, consumption and business spending data have been strong in recent months. If the 30-year fixed rate slumps to around 5%, that could that could spark a rebound in home sales, providing a boost to the economy and job market, Slok said. AdvertisementThe outlook for the job market, though, remains mixed, with some commentators warning that hiring could continue to slow due to the lagged impact of the Fed's rate hikes.

The foundation of Dow's work was based on the analysis of price trends, comparing swing highs and swing lows to define and track the trends over time. An initial look at the chart of Microsoft (MSFT) may suggest a consistent uptrend of higher highs and higher lows. And while this short-term uptrend is a valid observation, this also means Microsoft may be forming the dreaded "bear flag" pattern, which often precedes a major downdraft. A bear flag pattern occurs when you have an initial downtrend, in this case, the drop from $470 to $385 from early July to early August of this year. If MSFT would drop below $410 in the coming weeks, that would complete the bear flag pattern, and would also push the price back below the 200-day moving average.

The bulls on Wall Street have been largely right about the stock market over the past two years. Business Insider asked three bullish stock strategists what they consider the biggest risks. Yet, those economists have been largely wrong about what could sink the stock market and economy. "In May/June, when you had a lot of bears or those that had been late to jump on the bull parade all of a sudden switch their forecasts and kind of chase markets up, which is pretty, I mean pretty, pretty, pretty classic," Belski told Business Insider. The second risk is, similar to Belski's concern, a 1990's type melt-up in the stock market.

Before we get into the charts, it's important to discuss the process of choosing to write about TSLA this week. In other words, oftentimes, the most comprehensive method to locate constructive trade set-ups is reviewing a big list and taking note of the charts that look attractive. That's why I frequently intentionally do NOT look at the chart's stock symbol while going through a long list. I want the chart, and only the chart, to be the factor that influences my decision to potentially buy or sell it. Thus, seeing the above potential breakout attempt come to fruition would have a meaningful impact on its longer-term trend, too.

Now the central bank is mulling over when to do something it hasn’t done since the darkest days of the pandemic: cut interest rates. “A rate cut could be on the table in the September meeting,” Fed Chair Jerome Powell said on Wednesday, immediately jolting markets. When will the Fed cut rates? Rate cut probabilityThat said, investors are entirely convinced the Fed will cut rates at their September meeting, according to Fed funds futures data. Torsten Slok, Apollo Global’s chief economist, is maintaining his prior forecast that the Fed won’t cut rates at all this year.

New York CNN —The Federal Reserve is all but certain to hold interest rates steady at its meeting this week. That’s why Torsten Slok, Apollo Global’s chief economist, is maintaining his prior forecast that the Fed won’t cut rates at all this year. “There are still two more CPI releases before the September 18 [Fed] meeting, so we have to wait and see if the downtrend in inflation continues,” he told CNN. Fed officials have signaled that September will be when they finally lower interest rates. The difference between a few months for that initial cut “really doesn’t matter unless there’s some big shock that hits the economy in that time,” Fed Governor Christopher Waller said earlier this month.

This drop in such a short period seems overly exaggerated, and I'm on the lookout for signs of a bounce to initiate a bullish trade on CRWD. DMI (Directional Movement Index): The DMI is composed of three lines: DI+ (green line), DI- (red line), and ADX (blue line). When the DI- (red line) is above the DI+ (green line), it indicates a downtrend. Note that both DI- and DI+ are changing direction, which provides the first indication of a possible trend change. The Trade To take a bullish trade on CRWD, I'm using a trade structure called a "bull call spread."

Small-caps historically decline before and after the first interest rate cut, Barclays reported. This argues against the growing narrative that the easing cycle will boost small-caps, the bank said. AdvertisementBarclays ResearchTheir finding opposes many prevailing viewpoints on Wall Street, where rising bets of lower interest rates have sent investors piling into the small-cap trade. In part, falling interest rates might help ease debt burdens, but they can also signal a cooling economy — which favors large-cap exposure. Market veteran Ed Yardeni wrote this week that the small-caps trade has no legs, given the sector's lackluster forward earnings, revenue, and profit margins.

Goldman Sachs has refreshed its lists of top global stock picks for July, adding some and removing others. The stocks are featured in the investment bank's "Conviction List - Directors' Cut" which seeks to offer investors a "curated and active" list of 15 to 25 buy-rated stocks. Stocks on the list are selected by a subcommittee designated by the bank's Investment Review Committee for each region. "The subcommittee will collaborate with each sector analyst to identify top ideas that offer a combination of conviction, a differentiated view and high risk-adjusted returns," Goldman Sachs said. The investment bank's analyst Ben Andrews expects the company's organic growth and margins to surpass consensus estimates.

In a more defensive environment, we instead gravitate to lower volatility, higher dividend-paying stocks. By October, AT & T had pounded out a series of higher lows, confirming a rotation to a bullish trend. As a long-term trend gauge, I would assume that any price action above this trendline is still within the context of a bullish phase. I've also drawn a short-term trendline in pink, lining up the price lows in April, May, and June. Since an uptrend is formed by a pattern of higher highs and higher lows, then a consistent short-term uptrend would most likely remain above this trendline.

The housing market is unlikely to recover for several years and affordability won't get any better unless a recession hits, according to Bank of America economists. "The US housing market is stuck, and we are not convinced it will become unstuck anytime soon," Bank of America economist Michael Gapen and others said in a Monday note. In some respects, the housing market is a victim of its own success: Buyers swarmed in after Covid hit, taking advantage of mortgage rates around 3% and even less. Bank of America does expect some moderation in regard to prices, but again not for a few years. As things stand, the NAR's housing affordability index , after rising earlier this year, tumbled in May to its lowest level since November 2023.
