The fund made headlines for returning 4,144% amid the 2020 stock market crash, an example of a so-called black-swan event. And when the market moves one way, we think that's going to happen forever." Spitznagel's main don'ts to mom-and-pop investors are; don't chase the market, don't time the market, don't place too much confidence in its current direction, and don't make decisions based on short-term Fed moves. Instead, build a portfolio that's positioned so that if the market goes down by 50%, you won't be squeezed. In their quest to discover what makes love last, clinical psychologists and researchers John and Julie Gottman interviewed more than 3,000 couples and followed some for as long as 20 years. One commonality most successful couples had, the Gottmans found, was their ability to do "repairs." "The couples who really were successful a few years down the road were the ones who made repairs," Julie Gottman told Perel. Positive interactions included a smile, touching the other person's hand, or simply saying "I understand." Negative interactions were insulting or blaming the other person.

Mark Cuban is no fan of jargon — and the billionaire is far from alone. But using jargon words when you could opt for something simple and clear instead, typically has the opposite effect, according to Cuban. "Always use the simpler word," Cuban told Wired in an October video Q&A. "There's no reason to ever use the word 'cohort' when you could use the word 'group,'" he said. Avoiding mistakes in business and life comes down a few simple things, according to billionaire investor Charlie Munger, who died last week at age 99: good financial habits, integrity and "avoiding toxic people and toxic activities." Munger shared the advice during a Q&A session at Berkshire Hathaway's annual shareholders meeting in May. As for avoiding toxic people, look out for those "who are trying to fool you or lie to you or aren't reliable in meeting their commitments," Munger said. At the shareholders meeting in May, Buffett shared his own thoughts on the topic. To him, most major mistakes in life can be avoided by simply being a good person who acts with integrity.

Career changes can be hard, even for Bill Gates — who credits a simple, lifelong habit for his switch from a narrow-minded, decades-long focus on computers and software to international philanthropy. "I had a long period from about age 18 to 40 where I was very monomaniacal ... Microsoft was everything," Gates, 68, recently told comedian Trevor Noah on the "What Now? "I was lucky enough that as other people took over Microsoft, I got to go and read and learn about all the health challenges, why children die." With even more time to read, he researched ongoing global health crises and decided to make the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation his primary focus, he said. "Reading fuels a sense of curiosity about the world, which I think helped drive me forward in my career and in the work that I do now with my foundation," Gates told Time in 2017.

Charlie Munger, who died at age 99 last week, attributed his success and longevity at least partially to a single piece of advice: "Avoid crazy at all costs." That's what he told CNBC's Becky Quick last month, in an interview meant to air on his 100th birthday in January. When pressed for his keys to a long and successful life, Munger at first demurred, saying "I don't know the secret." Just avoid it, avoid it, avoid it." "My partner Charlie says there is only three ways a smart person can go broke: liquor, ladies and leverage," Buffett told CNBC's "Squawk Box" in 2018.

In addition to his comedy, actor Kevin Hart owns a plant-based restaurant chain, a tequila brand and an entertainment and production company called HartBeat. The single thread between them all, and the "secret weapon" to his success, the 44-year-old said in a recently published MasterClass course: the power of humor. "Humor has acted like the master key to every door that I've [gone] through," said Hart. In much tougher moments, humor is equally valuable, Hart noted. The Commission's legal service did not think a statement of objections regarding the deal was warranted, in contrast with antitrust officials handling the case, the people said. Without such a charge sheet, the deal would have been cleared unconditionally. The lawyers subsequently changed their mind and backed antitrust officials' decision to send the charge sheet setting out their concerns, the sources said on condition of anonymity, declining to provide confidential details. Antitrust officials can override objections from the legal service by either tweaking or narrowing their concerns to get their backing or by appealing to the top officials. While Amazon might still gain unconditional approval to buy iRobot, the charge sheet indicates that officials are looking to remedies from the company to address their concerns.
