The Week After the Debate
  + stars: | 2024-07-01 | by ( David Leonhardt | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Whatever its ultimate effect on the campaign, the first presidential debate of 2024 certainly did not cast the United States in a favorable light. It featured two elderly men — one 81, one 78 — who insulted each other and who most Americans wished were not the two major-party candidates for president. The other struggled at times to describe his own policies or complete his sentences. “I am worried about the image projected to the outside world,” Sergey Radchenko, a historian at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, wrote on social media. “It’s important to manage one’s ride into the sunset,” Sikorski tweeted.

Atlanta CNN —Larry Malinconico went to bed worried about President Joe Biden’s debate performance. “I’m extremely concerned,” Malinconico said just after the CNN debate Thursday night. She is still planning to vote Biden, but her reaction was also quite telling. “Why not allow Kennedy on stage,” he said of independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who failed to meet the CNN debate criteria. — Trump supporters approved of his debate performance but there was no evidence in our group that he gained support.

CNN —CNN Opinion asked political contributors to weigh in on the first presidential debate of the 2024 race. On the other hand, President Joe Biden did not meet expectations and may have increased concerns about his age and ability to lead for another four years. Debates are always more about style than substance, and President Joe Biden’s style was simply awful. Did President Joe Biden come off as a leader or a loser? And yes, the visuals in this first presidential debate of the cycle were phenomenally important.

Joe Biden and Donald Trump will face off Thursday night for the first general-election debate of the 2024 presidential election cycle. Mr. Trump and his MAGA allies have tried to portray the president as a doddering geriatric who can’t complete a sentence. Simply appearing engaged, alert and coherent will be a victory for Mr. Biden. Mr. Biden would also do well to remember this fact: Incumbent presidents almost always lose the first debate. Mr. Biden must recast the race from a referendum on his presidency to a stark choice between himself and Mr. Trump.

CNN —The Almighty won’t be standing on stage alongside Joe Biden on Thursday night. Biden’s campaign laid the groundwork for the Atlanta showdown hosted by CNN in a weekend memo. If Trump rants and vents his 2020 election lies on Thursday, he will play into Biden’s hands. That could avoid the mayhem of the first Trump v. Biden debate in 2020. His campaign has spent days trying to roll back his expectations of Biden as a doddering, elderly president who can’t string two words together.

With his two impeachments, a criminal conviction and an attempt to overturn the last election, Trump gave Biden plenty to work with. Biden has been road testing his character attacks on Trump for weeks in fundraising events and they’re now increasingly being parroted by campaign officials. Biden seeks to move the goalposts with ads during soccer tournamentThe Biden campaign is now making daily pitches to a significant corner of his coalition showing signs of stress. On Thursday, the Biden campaign turned to Hispanic voters — another key voting bloc where polls suggest he is underperforming. Biden’s character attacks on Trump represent his best attempt to remind Americans of the fateful nature of the choice they will face in November.

CNN —It’s the recurring threat President Joe Biden’s reelection bid will never be able to fully outrun. Democrats accused Republicans quoted or referred to in the account of making false claims and contradicting previous statements to damage Biden politically. But all it takes is one halting on-camera moment or media report to revive the frenzy over Biden’s age. Biden’s team habitually dismisses any concern over his capacity, and his doctors have certified him fit for duty. But they are concerned about Biden’s age.

In the 388-page report released last month, Hur concluded that Biden mishandled and improperly disclosed classified information after leaving the vice-presidency. But Hur said that he didn’t believe there was enough evidence to charge Biden with a crime. According to the transcript, Biden asks aloud when he was vice president, as he tried to recall timelines. “Remember, in this time frame, my son is either deployed or is dying,” Biden said, according to the transcript. The transcript shows investigators at times seeming to struggle to keep control, as Biden used up time with long answers.

A treasure trove for Biden watchers and historiansIn the interview, Biden speaks at length and fluently, easily recalling in-depth details about his vice presidency, family life and lore. One good week does not make a campaignOne person not ready to let the age issue go is Trump, who himself is 77. The former president’s focus on Biden’s age reflects the fact that one good week will not change a harsh reality of the coming eight months. Outside Washington and the self-contained world of politics and campaigns, concerns about Biden’s age will be hard to shift. The age issue was rumbling long before it became a major campaign issue.

Politics and economics have always been intertwined, often in ways that were mystifying in real time. The polls show that many Americans perceive this contest with the distress reserved for root canals or colonoscopies. Democrats tend to view Mr. Trump as a villain who has committed serial misdeeds that include plotting to overturn the results of the last presidential election. At the same time, many Trump supporters see Mr. Biden as a doddering tax-and-spend political hack. The prospect of this dreaded rematch sent me back to the history books, and to economic and markets data, looking for precedents and parallels.

And in the most important moment of the 2024 election campaign so far, Biden appeared to succeed. “President Biden is clearly not on his A-game and I think that’s a charitable way to describe it. Republicans complain Biden politicized a great state eventSome Republicans faulted the president’s delivery and said he mistook loudness for strength. And in his speech on Thursday, Biden was advocating a different kind of strength – one rooted in democracy rather than in trying to destroy it. That debate about two vastly different visions of the meaning and the soul of the country will decide the fates of both Biden and Trump come November.

New York CNN —The New York Times is facing a sustained wave of backlash. It is your agenda.”The Times is, of course, far from the only news organization that has faced criticism over how it has covered the 2024 race. There is a mountain of thorny issues at the doorstep of outlets like The Times — and often there is no clear answer. For example, after the 2020 election, the conventional wisdom was that the press should largely ignore Trump’s antics. “But if Democrats lose to Trump after all THAT coverage, the fault will not be in the media, but in themselves.”

Male Vanity as Political Weakness

If vanity is the soft underbelly of maleness, a vulnerable area between the armor of masculinity and the kill zone, it appears it was Donald J. Trump’s famous self-regard that was the target when Nikki Haley ramped up her attacks on her opponent in New Hampshire this week. Soon after Mr. Trump appeared to confuse Ms. Haley in a speech with the former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi during a Friday night rally in New Hampshire, Ms. Haley pounced. “My parents are up in age, and I love them dearly,’’ said Ms. Haley, conjuring an image of doddering geezers rocking on the porch. “But when you see them hit a certain age, there is a decline. That’s a fact — ask any doctor, there is a decline.’’

Only after he was awkwardly pulled aside on stage and informed that he was in Sioux City did he make a correction. Trump's Sioux flub caught the attention of Florida Gov. “I don’t think he’s senile. A Trump spokesperson noted that Trump hasn’t criticized Biden directly on age, and Trump has long argued that Biden's problem isn't actually his age but his mental state. But when a reporter noted Trump’s actual age, neither woman saw it as problem.

Opinion | Trump, Lord of the Ring (Around the Collar)
  + stars: | 2023-08-24 | by ( Paul Krugman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Given the existential threat he poses to America as we know it, Donald Trump’s economic ideas aren’t the first thing on most people’s minds. Nonetheless, it was a bit startling to see Trump propose, as he did last week on Fox Business, a 10 percent tariff on all U.S. imports, which he called a “ring around the collar” of the U.S. economy. Before I get to why that would be a really bad idea, I can’t help noting how remarkable it was to hear Trump using that phrase. It’s an article of faith among many Republicans that President Biden is doddering and senile (even though he isn’t, at all). (Wisk detergent was supposed to prevent ring around the collar.)

As the oldest sitting president, he's raising concerns about how long he can continue governing. Republicans — including Trump — have gleefully seized on Biden's verbal misadventures, such as when he called his vice president "President Harris." President Joe Biden drives the Ford's new all-electric F-150 Lightning in Dearborn, Michigan. Ruggerio described the idea that Joe Biden is diminished or can't remember things as "bull crap." Cox said that while he thinks Biden is "still Joe" and still capable, he worries that Biden's age is a problem.
