CNN —Lawyers for Donald Trump asked the New York judge who ordered the former president to pay nearly half a billion dollars to recuse himself from the case alleging the judge engaged in “prohibited communications” with a real estate lawyer about the case before issuing his decision. Trump’s attorneys said if Judge Arthur Engoron would not recuse from the case they are seeking an evidentiary hearing to delve into the judge’s reported conversation with New York real estate lawyer Adam Bailey. The judge is still overseeing a monitor who he put in place to oversee the Trump Organization’s finances. The NBC article was published in May, months after Engoron issued his $454 million judgement against Trump in February. Bailey told NBC he spoke with Engoron before the judge issued his decision in the case.

Washington CNN —Speaker Mike Johnson announced Wednesday he is sticking with his plan to put a series of foreign aid bills on the floor, including funding for Ukraine, after facing significant pressure from hardliners. The loan structure around aid comes after a meeting and news conference with Johnson and former President Donald Trump, who said in February that the US should stop providing foreign aid unless it is structured as a loan. The speaker has been facing mounting pressure to make tweaks to the foreign aid package proposed earlier this week – and not just from his most right-wing members. Other Republicans also expressed anger and wouldn’t rule out voting against Johnson on procedural motions that could upend the bill. “Let’s just hope that that does not happen, and that we can do our responsibilities, protect and defend our own democracy as we protect theirs,” former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.

AG Letitia James plans to go after Trump's cash and property if he doesn't pay his civil fraud debt. Is the ball in Letitia James' court? "The burden is on Letitia James to find Trump's assets" and decide what she wants garnished or auctioned, he said. D'Orazio predicts James would first target the cash that Trump and the Trump Organization keep in New York-registered bank accounts. He would then remit $95 million to the Attorney General's Office, and that would go toward paying Trump's judgment.

CNN —The dominant perception of early photography from West Africa is that it was taken through a colonizing lens. These are questions asked by a new book that seeks to re-examine the history of photography in the region. Her book demonstrates that gap was short, and history has been obscured in a way that has disenfranchised many Africans. Rates futures markets are showing cuts being priced as early as May 2024, according to LSEG data. The prospects for rate cuts received a boost on Tuesday after Fed Governor Christopher Waller, deemed a hawk, hinted at lower interest rates in the months ahead if inflation continued to ease. Deutsche Bank economists on Monday projected 175 basis points in Fed rate cuts in 2024, but said that those cuts would come with a mild recession in the first half of next year. “Absent rapid Fed easing, we expect a more challenging macro backdrop for stocks next year,” they wrote in a Wednesday report. Others said investors may be overestimating how quickly the Fed might react to signs of slowing inflation.

BOJ chief warns of highly uncertain wage, price outlook

The key to the outlook for monetary policy is whether strong wage growth and consumption, rather than cost pressures from rising import costs, become the key driver of inflation, Ueda said. Ueda said the BOJ was "not fully convinced" that wage hikes would keep accelerating, as many companies seemed undecided on their wage strategy for next year and beyond. That's why we are supporting demand and the broader economy with easy monetary policy," he added. While stressing the need to keep ultra-loose policy for now, Ueda said it was "extremely important" to weigh the benefits and costs of its policy. On the yen's recent falls, Ueda said the BOJ was keeping a close eye on their impact on economic and price developments.

Retail investor interest in artificial intelligence is cooling — but not every stock is feeling the pressure, according to Vanda Research. It also arrives amid a broader pullback among retail investors, he noted. "Retail investors' net buying of US securities remains low relative to previous years - particularly within the realm of AI stocks, which are witnessing diminishing retail interest as the initial fervor surrounding the sector wanes," Iachini said. But that resilience in the face of rapidly growing short interest can be a "cautionary flag" of a future slide in retail trader interest. Short interest in Nvidia has declined, coinciding with a jump in the stock price, Iachini said.

Five judges from Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal handed down their decision on Tuesday, following years of legal battles challenging the government’s refusal to let gay people get married or form a civil union partnership. Hong Kong does not allow or grant same-sex marriage or unions, even though homosexuality has been decriminalized in the city since 1991. Jerome Yau, co-founder of Hong Kong Marriage Equality, said he is “cautiously optimistic” as he awaits further details to be hammered out. Polls in Hong Kong have shown growing support for same-sex equality among the public, especially younger people. Raymond Chan Chi-chuen, the first member of Hong Kong’s Legislative Council to come out as gay, is a co-defendant in Sham’s case.

What started as a valid discussion about white female privilege quickly morphed into a demeaning catchall term that reinforces the time-tested trope of women as demanding, difficult and overly emotional. These negative gender stereotypes hit a raw chord for women because they are all too familiar. So insidious are these labels, researchers have coined the term “the abrasiveness trap” to describe their effects. Women’s leadership and authority are undermined by these biases, and that contributes to pay inequity and taints careers. Let every woman named Karen have her name back.

Russia said Friday that it thwarted a Ukrainian sea drone attack on one of its warships. But videos released shortly after by Ukrainian officials proved otherwise. One video shows a sea drone smashing into the side of the warship, partially damaging it. Another Ukrainian told CNN on Friday that the attack was carried out by a drone with around 450 kilograms of TNT. Ukrainian officials have not commented on the attack, which is in keeping with their security policy.

But even as the dust settles from a string of government seizures of failed midsized banks, the forces that sparked the regional banking crisis in March are still at play. What is coming will likely be the most significant shift in the American banking landscape since the 2008 financial crisis. JPMorgan shares are up 7.6% this year, while the KBW Regional Banking Index is down more than 20%. Some of those pressures will be visible as regional banks disclose second-quarter results this month. A self-described expert in data, Oster uses her economics training to dig into studies on things like circumcision and screen time and translate them for popular consumption. There doesn't seem to be much of a gap between the way Oster presents herself in her books and newsletters and the way she conducts her life. Unsurprisingly, economics informs every aspect of the way Oster sees the world. When Oster was a toddler, her mother told a Yale colleague that Oster often talked to herself before falling asleep.

MEXICO CITY, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc. (TSLA.O) will build a new plant in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Tuesday, dispelling concerns his government could block the deal over water shortages. Lopez Obrador said the two sides had reached agreement after a call with Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk on Monday, following a separate conversation he said the two held late last week. "This will represent a considerable investment and many, many jobs," Lopez Obrador told reporters, saying Musk had been receptive to Mexico's concerns and accepted its proposals. Speaking at a news conference, Lopez Obrador said Tesla would likely give more details of its plans on Wednesday. Speculation about the prospect of Tesla going to Mexico has circulated for months, and the plant is set to become one of the major investments of the Lopez Obrador administration.
