☆ Dollar General settles with the Labor Department over workplace safety violations

The U.S. Department of Labor announced a settlement Thursday with Dollar General , requiring the retailer and its subsidiaries to pay $12 million in penalties and implement significant workplace safety improvements in its more than 19,000 stores nationwide. Gun violence has also been an issue for Dollar General stores: 49 people have been killed and 172 people have been injured at Dollar General stores by gun violence, according to 2023 data from nonprofit Gun Violence Archive. A repeat offender with the Department of Labor, Dollar General became the first company to be added to OSHA's "severe violators" of workplace safety rules list in 2023, after the agency expanded the reach of its safety enforcement program. The settlement with the Department of Labor also requires Dollar General to monitor outcomes of those efforts and provide quarterly reports to OSHA. Walmart said Wednesday that it will open five automated distribution centers for fresh food across the country, as the retailer chases efficiency and its online grocery business grows. The discounter's new facilities are roughly 700,000 square feet on average. Walmart is the nation's largest grocer, but it is modernizing its supply chain to keep up with customers who are increasingly picking up orders in the parking lot or getting groceries delivered to their doors. The retailer has been automating supply chain facilities across the country, including distribution centers that handle shelf-stable items and fulfillment centers that help pack and ship online orders. Walmart has said that by early 2026, about two-thirds of its stores will be serviced by some kind of automation and roughly 55% of fulfillment center volume will move through automated facilities.

Target's credit card revenue fell to $667 million last year, down from $734 million in the prior fiscal year. Target will double its bonus payments to salaried employees this year, as the big-box retailer's profits recover from a bumpy nearly two-year stretch. Salaried employees at the Minneapolis-based retailer receive an annual bonus, based on Target's performance and the eligible amount set as part of their compensation. The retailer will pay 100% of employees' eligible annual bonus amounts for the most recent fiscal year, a company spokesperson said Thursday. It tops out at 175% of each employee's eligible bonus amount. For the fiscal year, Target said, it expects adjusted earnings per share will range from $8.60 to $9.60.

The current Target Circle program has more than 100 million members. The relaunch comes as Target aims to copy the success of Amazon’s juggernaut Amazon Prime and follow Walmart’s membership program. Walmart said it hasn't made any changes to store managers' pay structure in more than a decade. U.S. managers of the sprawling supercenters, which run about 180,000 square feet, will receive $20,000 in stock grants. Walmart said the stock grants will vest over a three-year period, with ownership for one-twelfth of the grant total coming every quarter. The new starting annual base salary for U.S. store managers will range from $90,000 to $170,000. That means that the average base pay for store leaders will go to $128,000 from $117,000, according to Cedric Clark, executive vice president of store operations at Walmart’s U.S. division.

About 60 cities and towns have pushed back on dollar store openings over the last several years. Cities that have attempted to curtail dollar store openings range from a small town in Georgia to major metro areas like Kansas City. Some of the efforts have been successful, not only keeping chains like Dollar General and Dollar Tree away but also clearing the way for retailers that communities want. Last year, Dollar General opened its first store in Montana, giving the chain at least one store in each of the 48 contiguous states. A federal judge blocked JetBlue Airways ' purchase of budget rival Spirit Airlines after the Justice Department sued to stop the merger, alleging it would drive up fares for some of the most price-sensitive consumers. "JetBlue plans to convert Spirit's planes to the JetBlue layout and charge JetBlue's higher average fares to its customers," U.S. District Court Judge William Young wrote in his decision. "The elimination of Spirit would harm cost-conscious travelers who rely on Spirit's low fares." Spirit shares plunged after the ruling and were down more than 50%, while JetBlue's stock gained about 5%.
