TOKYO — Lawmakers in Japan voted Monday to retain the embattled Shigeru Ishiba as prime minister despite his long-governing party’s dismal showing in parliamentary elections last month. Ishiba, a straight-talking former defense minister, received 221 votes compared with 160 for Yoshihiko Noda, leader of the opposition Constitutional Democratic Party. Many Japanese officials assume Trump is going to be “more straightforwardly anti-China,” and that Japan will be “somehow miraculously left off the hook,” he said. Though Japan has already pledged to double defense spending to 2% of gross domestic product by 2027, “that’s probably not going to be enough to satisfy Trump,” Boling said. While Abe was “extraordinarily skillful” in dealing with Trump, Ishiba has a different personality, Boling said.

Paris CNN —On the second day of Paris Fashion Week at the city’s Palais de Tokyo, a giant inflatable elephant welcomed guests to the Ester Manas fashion show. Methods such as ruching and drawstrings eliminate the need for classical sizing and enable Ester Manas to cater to sizes XS to 3XL. Similarly, a 2023 size inclusivity report conducted by Vogue Business found that 95.6% of all looks presented for Fall-Winter 2023 were in a size US 0-4. “Numerically, it is very apparent that this ‘trend’ (of both being personally comfortable with your size and size inclusivity being socially accepted) has retreated,” Delepierre said. “Beyond the size dimension, (Ester Manas clothes) are strong pieces that stand on their own and make everyone feel sexy,” he said.

Though often thought of as a natural second city to visit alongside Tokyo, Kyoto is Cheng's undisputed No. 1 Japanese city. The old city is lined with small walkable roads, has many temples, and boasts a riverbank lined with small houses and shops. Even though it is also a tourist hot spot, Cheng said Kyoto feels more serene than Tokyo. "It's just a lot calmer and peaceful," she said, adding that the city's qualities exemplify "Japanese culture."

A wing of the Eiffel Tower has been cleared out to make way for a brand-new restaurant called Gustave 24. A fully built commercial kitchen is set to be airlifted into the Palais de Tokyo, a contemporary art museum on the Right Bank. Some 80 temporary restaurants are being set up in Paris and other locales around the country where competitions will be staged. They will serve an average of 30,000 diners a day, each offering a different menu and format. And they’ll offer visitors a chance to experience the Olympics as dinner theater.

Japan is the only country among the world’s wealthiest democracies that has not legalized same-sex unions. Few celebrities are openly gay. But now, Netflix is introducing the country’s first same-sex dating reality series. In Japan, the handful of openly gay and transgender performers who regularly appear on television are typically flamboyant, effeminate comic foils who are shoehorned into exaggerated stereotypes. With “The Boyfriend,” Dai Ota, the executive producer, said he wanted to “portray same-sex relationships as they really are.”

On the runway, models marched with their heads covered by American eagle flags, wore slogans like “Don’t be Dumb” and carried plastic bags filled with cash. The latest Comme des Garçon collection featured lashings of Barbie pink and frothy tulle skorts.

PARIS (AP) — As the Paris spring couture shows entered their third day, Jennifer Lopez ensured that the power of runway designs were matched by the power of a VIP audience. The singer and actress energized the Palais de Tokyo, arriving at the last minute for Elie Saab's show amid pandemonium. Haute couture — the fashion industry’s ideas factory — is the age-old tradition of producing exorbitantly priced, made-to-measure garments for the world’s richest women. Spend enough time in Tokyo and you can start to notice certain paradoxes, like how a city that feels so busy can sound so quiet. You may also find that, despite its sprawling footprint, the best way to experience the city is on foot. Its walkable nature is partly what has made Tokyo a destination rivaling Paris or New York for street photography. On a recent visit in late October and early November, the city was uncharacteristically warm. Elsewhere, others dressed in plaids, corduroy and a variety of layers.

INZAI CITY, Japan (AP) — Winning the Zozo Championship in Japan was special for American Collin Morikawa, whose great grandparents emigrated from the country. But more important was a victory — anywhere — after a 27-month winless streak on the PGA Tour as people began to ask questions about his game. Morikawa started two shots behind 54-hole leader Justin Suh, who faded badly looking for his first PGA Tour win. Fellow American Justin Suh had a one-stroke lead after 54 holes, looking to claim his first PGA Tour win. A former college star like Morikawa, Suh slumpled on the final 18 and shot 74.

After weathering decades of deflation and stagnant growth, Japan is seeing an investment boom that has made apartments in central Tokyo unaffordable for young Japanese professionals. For locals, the surge in prices has made Tokyo the second most unaffordable city worldwide, only behind Hong Kong, according to a UBS global real estate report. Average condo prices in central Tokyo were bumped up in the past year by a large supply of high-end residences hitting the market.

Saudi Arabia reportedly wants to join the effort, but Japan is said to be wary of letting Riyadh in. A senior British defense told The Financial Times that the UK views "Saudi Arabia as a key partner in the fighter program and we are working to ensure strong progress as soon as possible." Hazardous "forever chemicals" called PFAS are contaminating drinking water, food, and air. It may be impossible to completely avoid PFAS, but there are a few simple ways to reduce your exposure. A 2019 study found that people had lower PFAS levels in their blood after eating at home, and higher levels after eating fast food or at restaurants. A few types of water filters can diminish PFAS levels, though they may not completely remove the chemicals from the water. It was previously updated to reflect disagreements in the scientific community about the degree of PFAS exposure from Teflon.
The US Environmental Protection Agency just released a proposal for enforceable standards for six PFAS compounds in drinking water. The new EPA proposal would set the threshold for those two substances at 4 nanograms per liter of drinking water. It also proposes a "hazard index" to set a limit on the combined quantity of four other PFAS in drinking water: PFNA, GenX, PFBS, and PFHxS. Communities across the US have especially high PFAS contamination in their drinking water, often due to a nearby industrial or military facility. "You can't just regulate in drinking water, without addressing the other side," Sunderland said, adding that you have to "turn off the source."

The show opened with a black, sleeveless jumpsuit cinched at the waist with a gold belt, and worn over a white t-shirt. Further shaking the fabric from its traditional twin-set role, Valli worked the material into long overcoats, loose jackets, mini-dresses and a bright, red jumpsuit. Popular with the red carpet set, and known for voluminous, tulle dresses, Valli broadened his fan base with a collaboration with H&M in 2019.
