Meeting outside Paris last week, top officials from France, Germany and Italy pledged to pursue a coordinated economic policy to counter stepped-up efforts by Washington and Beijing to protect their own homegrown businesses. The three European countries have joined the parade of others that are enthusiastically embracing industrial policies — the catchall term for a variety of measures like targeted subsidies, tax incentives, regulations and trade restrictions — meant to steer an economy. More than 2,500 industrial policies were introduced last year, roughly three times the number in 2019, according to a new study. And most were imposed by the richest, most advanced economies — many of which could previously be counted on to criticize such tactics. CNN —Astronomers have spotted the most massive known stellar black hole in the Milky Way galaxy after detecting an unusual wobble in space. The wobbling movement of an old giant star in the Aquila constellation revealed that it was in an orbital dance with a dormant black hole, and it’s the third such dormant black hole spotted by Gaia. So Gaia BH3 is the most massive black hole in our galaxy that formed from the death of a massive star. Stellar black holes observed across the Milky Way galaxy are about 10 times as massive as the sun on average. True to expectations, the researchers found that the star orbiting Gaia BH3 was metal-poor, which means that the star that formed Gaia BH3 was likely the same.

CNN —Astronomers have uncovered additional evidence that one of Saturn’s smallest moons, Mimas, is hiding a global ocean beneath its icy surface. Discovered in 1789 by English astronomer William Herschel as a tiny dot near Saturn, Mimas was first imaged from space by the Voyager probes in 1980. Craters cover the surface of Mimas, but the largest one is 80 miles (about 130 kilometers) across and causes the moon to resemble the Death Star from the “Star Wars” films. But Saturn’s Enceladus appears younger because active geysers have contributed to resurfacing, or depositing of new, fresh material on that moon’s surface. “Mimas certainly demonstrates that moons with old surfaces can be hiding young oceans, which is pretty exciting,” Rhoden said.

The sight of tractor barricades creating long lines of vehicles highlighted the gulfs in economic and social opportunity between town and country in France. At Jossigny near the Disneyland theme park outside Paris, protesters blocked all six lanes of the A4 highway, parking their tractors so they formed what looked like an ear of wheat when seen from the air. Some vehicles carried placards declaring “No food without farmers" and “The end of us would mean famine for you." South of the capital, protesters used forklifts to deposit hay bales to block the A6 highway, broadcaster BFM-TV's images showed. Traffic authorities in the Paris area reported protests causing snarls on multiple major highways heading into the capital.

Paris CNN —Six airports in France were forced to evacuate on Wednesday for security reasons. Lille airport in northern France said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the airport was being evacuated because of a bomb threat, with security operations on site. CNN affiliate BFMTV reported, citing a police source, that the airports in Nantes and Beauvais, outside Paris, had also been evacuated for security reasons. The venue was forced to evacuate on Tuesday due to a suspicious item, and over the weekend due to a bomb threat. France raised its security alert level to the highest possible following a knife attack at a school in the northern city of Arras last week.

Government spokesman Olivier Veran said the investigations under way would determine the "exact circumstances" of Wednesday's collision. The death of the teenager, whose ethnicity had not been reported, occurred as France gears up to host the Rugby World Cup.
