A 2019 study found that young LGBTQ+ men in rural America experiencing catfishing on dating apps felt angry and fearful. She also emphasized the need to recognize today’s loneliness epidemic, which “leads people to perhaps be more susceptible to catfishing scams,” she said. EBay said Tuesday that it plans to lay off 9% of the company's workforce, equal to about 1,000 full-time jobs, as the tech industry continues to downsize to start 2024. Iannone said the job cuts are necessary because eBay's "overall headcount and expenses have outpaced the growth of our business." Following hefty job cuts last year, tech companies have continued to eliminate positions in January as concerns about consumer and business spending persist. Regarding eBay's cuts, Iannone said he wants employees to work from home on Jan. 24, "to provide some space and privacy for these conversations." EBay shares dropped about 4% in November after the company provided fourth-quarter revenue guidance that trailed Wall Street estimates.

An image of new Twitter owner Elon Musk is seen surrounded by Twitter logos in this photo illustration in Warsaw, Poland on 08 November, 2022. LONDON — A U.K. man pleaded guilty to helping orchestrate a high-profile hack on the Twitter accounts of numerous celebrities and politicians including Elon Musk, Joe Biden and Kanye West. Combined, the charges carry a maximum sentence of 77 years, the Justice Department said. "O'Connor communicated with others regarding purchasing unauthorized access to a variety of Twitter accounts, including accounts associated with public figures around the world," the Justice Department said Wednesday. "A number of Twitter accounts targeted by O'Connor were subsequently transferred away from their rightful owners.
O'Connor pleaded guilty to charges including conspiring to commit computer intrusions, to commit wire fraud and to commit money laundering. O'Connor, who was extradited to the U.S. on April 26, will also forfeit more than $794,000 and pay restitution to victims, prosecutors said. Prosecutors said the schemes included gaining unauthorized access to social media accounts on Twitter in July 2020 as well as a TikTok account in August 2020. The July 2020 Twitter attack hijacked a variety of verified accounts, including those of then-Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) CEO Elon Musk, who now owns Twitter. The alleged hacker used the accounts to solicit digital currency, prompting Twitter to prevent some verified accounts from publishing messages for several hours until security could be restored.
Singer-songwriter Coles Whalen performed for friends and family at an undisclosed location in March. Photo: Thomas Simonetti/The Washington Post/Getty ImagesWASHINGTON—Supreme Court justices on Wednesday questioned whether a Colorado stalking law violates the First Amendment because defendants can be convicted even if they didn’t intend to threaten victims with physical violence. The case was a textbook example of cyberstalking. Billy Counterman became obsessed with a Denver singer-songwriter, Coles Whalen, and in 2014 began texting her through Facebook Messenger, under the delusion that they were in a romantic relationship. The hundreds of messages, which kept coming even after she blocked Mr. Counterman and obtained a restraining order against him, were terrifying and drove her from performing in public, Ms. Whalen said.
"We need bipartisan action from Congress to hold Big Tech accountable," Biden wrote. Biden's call for bipartisanship on tech issues is notable since the split Congress will complicate the landscape for passing legislation in any domain. The decision to focus the op-ed on tech suggests it may be a rare area of hope for progress while working across the aisle. Biden focused on three key areas of tech legislation he hopes to see this Congress. Finally, Biden called for "fairer rules of the road" when it comes to competition in the tech sector.
Blackwood allegedly catfished the CEO of a publicly trade company as part of an extortion ploy. She is accused of threatening to release explicit images and conversations in exchange for money. Sakoya Blackwood allegedly "used multiple online identities to target wealthy and high-profile men" starting in March 2022 at least, according to the DOJ and court documents. According to the DOJ, Blackwood "engaged in a campaign of harassment" against the CEO, which involved "sending numerous intimidating and threatening text messages." In addition to the CEO, several other affluent men were part of the catfishing and extortion scheme, the DOJ claimed.
