“Our study of over two million individuals from 160+ countries runs contrary to this idea.”People with access to home internet and/or mobile internet and actively use internet report greater well-being across eight different categories — including life satisfaction and social life, according to a study published Monday in the journal Technology, Mind, and Behavior. Across all those ways of crunching the numbers, about 85% showed that those who have and use the internet report greater well-being that those who do not, according to the research. Other research has shown that the connection between mobile internet use and well-being is complex and varies among individuals, he added. “Our results might then simply indicate that individuals with more money, access to healthcare, etc, report greater well-being,” Vuorre said in an email. The internet is used for a wide variety of things — including online banking, shopping, finding services, reading the news and cyberbullying — and those different uses will have different effects on well-being, Vuorre said.

In 2022, the Utah legislature banned transgender girls from high school girls’ sports. In August 2022, a Utah judge granted a preliminary injunction allowing trans girls to compete on girls’ teams after the parents of two trans girls filed a lawsuit. But as long as transgender girls’ gender identities are policed, cisgender girls will continue to have theirs policed as well. “I avoided athletic activities out of terror, not disinterest,” one participant said (a new study published last month also found that trans girls are primarily avoiding sports out of fear of harassment). If cisgender girls avoid sports out of these fears as well, they stand to be similarly negatively impacted.

With lots of kids now getting their news from social media – where disinformation and content created by artificial intelligence run rampant – 18 states have some form of K-12 media literacy education on the books, according to Media Literacy Now. Of those, four – Delaware, Texas, New Jersey and, starting this year, California – mandate media literacy, with lesson standards now being crafted state by state. “But we haven’t really taught people how to use them ethically, efficiently and responsibly.”To do that, a media literacy lesson might include analyzing which emotions the wording of a mass media headline evoke. And California starting this year requires media literacy instruction to be integrated into K-12 mathematics, science and history-social science curriculums when they’re revised, according to the bill. Relational aggression among teens isn’t anything new, but it can be especially hideous when it plays out alongside cyberbullying. Relational aggression among minors is complexCancel culture trickled down to teens, tweens and even younger children, and the combination of cyberbullying and social isolation in school can be swift. Protective factors are essentialTeens need sources of support and understanding when they’re dealing with relational aggression and cyberbullying, and this is where protective factors become important. • Research the reporting options at your teen’s school in case your teen decides to seek help on campus. What’s difficult about relational aggression is that it’s often subtle and under the radar of adults working in teen spaces.

There's only one correct answer if you want them to lead happier, more successful lives, says Yale University psychology professor Laurie Santos: "Wait as long as possible." This is likely to encourage poor mental health — in ways that affect kids differently than adults — and distractions in the classroom, Santos says. Social media use exposes many kids to cyberbullying, hate speech and discrimination, Make It reported in May. "These are brains that are forming and trying to pay attention in school [while their phones are going] ding, ding, ding." "They're not going to want to do as you say, they're going to want to do as you do," Santos says.

May told Insider that being open about the challenges you're facing can make you a better leader. Leaders need to "take the wall down" so those under them can say what they need to perform best. Insider recently asked May about her work in HR and meeting the needs of the company's large employee base. But you also need to work for companies with leaders that really understand the challenges. But I think employers need to keep top of mind the needs of their people.

Discord has introduced parental control tools, a move that represents a continued shift by the growing social media company to involve parents on its platform amid greater scrutiny of teen social media usage and its potentially negative health consequences. But parents and public officials continue to pressure social media platforms over issues related to teen usage. A Surgeon General's report from May of this year indicated that 46% of teens ages 13-17 say that social media makes them feel worse about their body image, and that there is a relationship between social media use and depression. Discord's blog post about the new parental controls attempted to strike a balance between its user-first philosophy and the fact that many social media users are teens — the Surgeon General report said up to 95% of people between ages 13 and 17 report using social media. Snap, Instagram, TikTok all have parental controlsParental controls like these are growing more common across social media.

Ron DeSantis signed an education bill that prohibits students from accessing certain social media platforms on school Wi-Fi and requires instruction on the negative impacts of social media. These efforts come amid heightened bipartisan pressure from lawmakers for social media companies to do more to protect their youngest users. What's the best age for kids to start using social media? Surgeon General Vivek Murphy that social media presents a "profound risk" for the mental health of adolescents and teens. Murphy's warning, which came with recommendations for how the tech industry can revamp social media platforms to make them safer, follows a similar health advisory issued by the APA earlier this month. That's easier said than done, especially when all your kids' friends have social media accounts. "We have no psychological science demonstrating that kids will suffer for not being on social media," Prinstein says.

What to Know About Limiting Your Child’s Screen Time

Attention, parents with “screenagers”: The U.S. government has issued a public warning that scrolling through apps like TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat may pose serious risks to your child’s mental health. Social media also hurts exercise, sleep and other activities, he said. One is to explore potential options to limit children’s screen time. Google’s and Apple’s mobile operating systems offer free tools that can be effective for restricting screen time on smartphones and tablets. These tools allow parents to monitor and set limits on their children’s devices.

“Social media is neither inherently harmful nor beneficial to our youth,” said Dr. Thema Bryant, the APA’s president. The recommendations emphasize that adolescents should have instruction in social media literacy and psychological development before joining social media as well as occasional training to bolster their knowledge as they go along, all to minimize potential harm. They also advise that social media use should be tailored to the child’s developmental stage — and monitored by adults in the case of younger children. But how do you convince a teenager to get on board with safer social media use? Teens are experiencing much of their social life on social media, and rather than shame it, we should collaborate with the younger generation, she said.
There are a lot of reasons why you might want to delete a popular app from their phone — and you're far from alone. Popular social media apps Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat garnered the most internet searches from people looking to delete those apps over a recent six-month period, according to an analysis of search trends from cybersecurity website VPNOverview. During that period, there were more than 900,000 searches for how to "delete" or "deactivate" Instagram, more than any of the country's 30 most popular apps by downloads, VPNOverview said in its February report. And in recent years, polls have shown growing distrust of popular social media platforms over issues like disinformation, cyberbullying, phishing scams, privacy concerns and data mining. And, while the majority of teens today are willing to take breaks from social media, they're also mostly split on whether they could give up social media altogether.
