The media line fed to the public about weeks of protests at Columbia — and the administrative crackdown that followed — has been selective at best. Columbia students have made clear that that’s what drives their protests. Why, even as numerous students at Columbia and elsewhere have been doxxed, harassed and bullied, were no congressional hearings called? But if Columbia students didn’t care about their university and the values it claims to uphold, they wouldn’t have risked so much with their protests. By the same token, if students didn’t care about our country, they wouldn’t protest so vocally against its policies.

Walgreens CEO Tim Wentworth told CNBC's Jim Cramer his retail pharmacy chain can rival Amazon because of its human-to-human interactions with customers. Wentworth said he loves Amazon, and the online retail giant has set the bar and driven innovation in the industry. But he emphasized that its consumer presence is really what makes the company competitive against Amazon. Over the past few years, Walgreens' business has been hurt by decreasing demand for Covid products, low pharmacy reimbursement rates, competition from online retailers and discontent from pharmacy staff. He also said Walgreens is decreasing pharmacists' "low-value work," such as pill counting, by using micro-fulfillment centers.

To combat that, two high school history teachers have started a national campaign to incorporate more women’s history into high school classrooms via Advanced Placement (AP) classes. Their argument, as laid out on their website, is that women’s history is not sufficiently taught. In AP US History, women’s suffrage, for example, is taught as just one of many movements encapsulated in the Progressive Era. It’s a safe assumption that a women’s studies AP course would face similar controversy and scrutiny, particularly with the inclusion of women’s reproductive rights.

New York City, its schools and public hospital system announced a lawsuit Wednesday against the tech giants that run Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and YouTube, blaming their “addictive and dangerous” social media platforms for fueling a childhood mental health crisis that is disrupting learning and draining resources. The city spends more than $100 million on youth mental health programs and services each year, Mayor Eric Adams' office said. “Over the past decade, we have seen just how addictive and overwhelming the online world can be, exposing our children to a non-stop stream of harmful content and fueling our national youth mental health crisis,” Adams said. Some bills would bar financial institutions from discriminating against those who refuse to participate in DEI programs. Meanwhile, Democrats have filed about two dozen bills in 11 states that would require or promote DEI initiatives. The Supreme Court’s June decision ending affirmative action at universities has created a new legal landscape around diversity programs in the workplace and civil society. CNN —Black History Month, which gets underway this week, is a chance to give Americans the timely reminder that you can’t teach our history honestly without understanding Black struggle and triumph. There are few aspects of America’s past that haven’t been impacted by conscientious Black people and their resistance to systemic racism and illiberal democracy. The situation at Harvard has been made more dire by the university’s failure to push back sufficiently against broader political attacks. Another vocal critic of Penslar is the former Harvard president Lawrence Summers, who was also an outspoken opponent of Gay’s. As an academic institution, we should be leading the resistance to these assaults on higher education, not bowing to them.

Advocates for comprehensive sex education say the restrictions in early education may prevent kids from getting age-appropriate foundational knowledge that they build on each year, said Alison Macklin, director of policy and advocacy at the progressive sex education organization SIECUS. To comply with the new law in Kentucky, for example, the state’s education agency advised schools eliminate fifth-grade lessons on puberty and reproductive body parts. Twenty-eight states require sex education, and 35 require HIV education, according to tracking by the Guttmacher Institute, a research group that supports abortion rights. Massachusetts, for example, recently announced new sexual health education guidelines, which were last updated in 1999. She remembers just one optional day of sex education in middle school.

Gavin Newsom signed a bill Monday to ban school boards from rejecting textbooks based on their teachings about the contributions of people from different racial backgrounds, sexual orientations and gender identities. Many of the new restrictions enacted by conservative-dominated school boards have been over textbook representations of sexuality and LGBTQ+ history. A 2011 state law requires schools to teach students about the historical contributions of gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. Students have also taken a liking for GenAI, which can generate anything from essays to mathematical calculations with just a few line of prompts. Among a series of guidelines in a 64-page report, UNESCO stressed on the need for government-sanctioned AI curricula for school education, in technical and vocational education and training. While China has formulated rules on GenAI, the European Union's AI Act is likely to be approved later this year. The Paris-based agency also sought to protect the rights of teachers and researchers and the value of their practices when using GenAI.

The legislation would rezone land owned by nonprofit colleges and religious institutions, such as churches, mosques, and synagogues, to allow for affordable housing. In an effort to comply with Florida's expanded-upon "Don't Say Gay" law, one school district is no longer asking students to read Shakespeare in its entirety. The law has also led to another school district forbidding teachers and students from using pronouns that don't correspond with their sex at birth. Hillsborough School District Spokeswoman Tanya Arja told the Tampa Bay Times the changes were made "in consideration of the law" — Shakespeare's writings, like many classics, are filled with sexually-charged innuendos and romance. The Times' report also noted the changes are occurring as the school district adapts to changes in Florida's "Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking" educational standards. It's also now Orange County School District policy that transgender teachers and contractors are barred from asking students to refer to them using honorifics or pronouns that do not correspond to their sex at birth.
