In February, the Met revealed Ballard’s 1962 short story “The Garden of Time” as the forthcoming red carpet theme. Victor Virgile/Gamma-Rapho/Getty ImagesThere is little glitz and glamor in Ballard’s world — or if there is, it doesn’t last for long. David Cronenberg's adaptation of JG Ballard's "Crash" debuted at Cannes Film Festival in 1996. In 2021, American designer Thom Browne’s Spring-Summer catwalk at New York Fashion Week also imagined life behind Count Axel’s garden wall. And now with the Met Gala theme, the beautiful flower that dies as soon as it’s plucked, it connects back to fashion being ephemeral.

Compounding the problem is that Trump is facing a lot of legal troubles, which have been quite expensive. And let’s be clear, Trump is not paying this out of his own pocket. [MUSIC PLAYING]So there’s been a lot of discussion as to how these legal bills are going to get paid going forward. And Lara Trump, the former president’s daughter-in-law, has basically been installed as the co-chair at the Republican National Committee, because, of course, it’s a family business, whatever. [MUSIC PLAYING]And she was asked whether she thought that Republican voters would be cool with the party paying her father-in-law’s legal bills, and she was like, “absolutely.”

Former President Donald Trump’s favorability ratings are only slightly better. The bipartisan legislation to control the flow of migrants across the southern border was blown up by opposition from Trump. One thing that is going right for Biden is Trump himself. “I want to vote for Donald Trump in November, wrote Marc A. Thiessen in the Washington Post. … Just like office holders have released their tax returns (up until former President Donald Trump), I would like to see more candidates release their physical and mental health assessments,” Schurman observed.

I once visited a domestic violence shelter in New England. It had three bedrooms and a shared kitchen and bath, beige walls and furniture and a single kitchen table that required eating in shifts. In exchange, traumatized families were given temporary housing with other traumatized families behind walls and gates, often with shared bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms. As a result, this guiding philosophy of secrecy as safety is drawing scrutiny from advocates, policymakers and survivors. Calls for what are termed open or public shelters appear to be on the rise.

People who predominantly sit at work have a 16% higher risk of mortality from all causes, and a 34% higher risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease. As I sit here typing, I’m wondering what I should make of these study results. CNN: Are you surprised by the findings in this study — a 16% higher mortality from all causes and a 34% higher mortality from cardiovascular disease for people who predominantly sit at work? Studies have also shown that even light activity to break up the periods of prolonged sitting can reduce that risk. People would do a lot to change that habit, as they should when they sit for prolonged periods at work.

In the chilly dusk on a recent Saturday, nine people were creeping through the California hills. Their faces were painted in shades of green, yellow, brown and black, so that they blended into their surroundings. Moving uphill through thickets of trees, they tried to be silent, as if not to draw the attention of some unseen enemy. They were conscious of every breath, every dry leaf that crunched underfoot, every snapped twig. They were just civilians — biotech workers, a masseuse, an entrepreneur — who had decided to spend a weekend preparing themselves for a war, societal collapse or some other calamity.

When crunched for time, the post-workout cool-down is the first thing many of us skip. We aim to get the heart pumping and blood flowing during exercise. It’s just as important to intentionally bring the body back to baseline. A post-workout cool-down helps bring your heart rate, blood pressure and breathing to a more normal range. It also helps deregulate your nervous system, says Matthew Sacco , a health and sports-performance psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

As a financial planner, here are seven strategies I recommend to help ensure your budget covers all your holiday shopping expenses. Determine how much you can afford to spend on holiday shopping without compromising your financial well-being. Set shopping deadlinesOne thing that I have learned about holiday shopping is that last-minute gifts are much more expensive. Have a separate high-yield savings account earmarked for holiday shoppingOnce you've crunched the numbers and created a holiday spending budget, it is a great idea to create a separate savings account earmarked for holiday shopping. Bundle giftsOne of my favorite ways to save on holiday shopping is to bundle gifts per family or group.

Make America Build Again

America is the sixth-most-expensive place in the world to build subways and trolleys. The solutions will cost trillions of dollars and require a pace of building unseen in America since World War II. Perhaps the single most pressing question we face today is: How do we make America build again? "For this class of projects, federal environmental laws are more the exception." The prospect of overhauling our hard-won environmental laws might feel like sacrilege to anyone who cares about the Earth.

It's hard to tell, for a simple reason: The data on the safety of robot cars sucks. Until robot cars have traveled for hundreds of millions of miles, there's no way to get a statistically significant, unequivocal conclusion. If the data on robot cars is equivocal or incomplete, then those rules should keep them off the road. In a sense, she's Elon Musk's worst nightmare.
