CNN —Russian state media confirmed on Tuesday that the Kremlin replaced the head of the country’s navy following a string of successful Ukrainian attacks on its Black Sea fleet. Moiseyev replaces Adm. Nikolay Yevmenov, according to TASS, whose future had been the subject of speculation for weeks due to Russia’s repeated losses in the Black Sea. Ukraine claimed last month that it had disabled a third of the Russian Black Sea fleet in attacks which have most involved underwater drones. But those losses have prompted the Kremlin to redouble its efforts to fortify the Black Sea Fleet. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu effectively admitted that Ukraine had taken advantage of vulnerabilities in the Black Sea Fleet during a visit to its command post.

Russia’s RIA Novosti state news agency released a video of Kim dressed in a black suit and accompanied by his top officials arriving at the university on Russky Island. U.S. and South Korean officials have said North Korea could provide badly needed munitions for Moscow’s war on Ukraine in exchange for sophisticated Russian weapons technology that would advance Kim’s nuclear ambitions. Kim and Shoigu later traveled to Vladivostok, where they inspected the Admiral Shaposhnikov frigate. Russia’s navy commander, Adm. Nikolai Yevmenov, briefed Kim on the ship’s capabilities and weapons, which include long-range Kalibr cruise missiles that Russian warships have regularly fired at targets in Ukraine. Later Saturday, Kim visited a local theater to watch Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty ballet performance.

Special forces landed on the western shore of Crimea, near the settlements of Olenivka and Mayak, in a joint operation with the country’s Navy, according to Ukrainian Defense Intelligence. Russian-appointed authorities in Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula which has been illegally occupied by Moscow’s forces since 2014, have not responded to the claims. The Ukrainians said Wednesday they had destroyed an S-400 missile defense battery in the area. Ukrainian Defense Intelligence released several videos purporting to show Ukrainian inflatables close to the Crimean coast in the darkness. The Russian Defense Ministry released cockpit video showing a jet fighter using cannon fire against the boats.

CNN —Six people died after a boat carrying migrants sank in the English Channel, authorities say. The English Channel is one of the world’s busiest waterways and crossing on small boats is extremely dangerous. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak – whose governing Conservatives have been struggling in the polls – made stopping boats making the perilous crossing across the English Channel one of his top priorities. Pascal Rossignol/ReutersBut 755 migrants were detected crossing the channel to the UK Thursday, government figures showed. French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said in a tweet that her “thoughts are with the victims” of the migrant boat that capsized.

Australia’s defense minister said the country’s navy needed enhanced lethality. Photo: roslan rahman/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesSYDNEY—A wide-ranging review of Australia’s military found that the key U.S ally needs to quickly overhaul its armed forces and focus more on capabilities such as long-range missiles, amid concerns that rising tensions between the U.S. and China could increase the chance of a conflict in the region. Australian officials said they agreed with the review’s conclusion that the country’s military isn’t fully fit for purpose in the current strategic environment. The defense industry minister, Pat Conroy, said the revamped army will eventually be able to fire weapons that can hit targets some 300 miles away, versus 25 miles now.
TAIPEI—China’s military launched exercises around Taiwan in an apparent escalation of its response to an international tour by the self-governing island’s president that included highly scrutinized stops in the U.S. Hours after President Tsai Ing-wen returned to Taiwan on Friday night, Chinese maritime safety authorities said the country’s navy planned to conduct seven live-fire exercises over the course of 12 days off the coast of Fujian province, which faces Taiwan, starting Saturday morning.
Vice Adm. Karl Thomas, commander of the U.S. Seventh Fleet, said he sees China’s recent actions around Taiwan as an extension of the ‘might makes right’ mentality. China’s armed forces are capable of blockading Taiwan, a senior U.S. Navy official said, pointing to the size of the country’s navy, which is the world’s largest and growing at a rapid pace. “They have a very large navy, and if they want to bully and put ships around Taiwan, they very much can do that,” Vice Adm. Karl Thomas , commander of the U.S. Seventh Fleet, said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
