Falling gas prices kept inflation in check following a 0.3% gain in April. “Adding to the good inflation news, core services inflation (excludes energy services) printed its mildest monthly increase since September 2021,” Kathy Bostjancic, Nationwide’s chief economist, wrote in a note issued Wednesday. On an annual basis, shelter inflation slowed a tenth of a percentage point to 5.4%, which is its lowest rate since April 2022. Still, those costs continue to run hot for consumers, with transportation services prices up 10.5% from a year ago and car insurance up 20.3%. Soft CPI boosts chances for Fed cutsThe CPI, which tracks average change in prices for a basket of goods and services common to consumers, is the most widely cited inflation metric.

CNN —Carrie Bradshaw, the lead character played by Sarah Jessica Parker in the 1998-2004 TV series “Sex and the City,” has always been more of a fashion daredevil than a fashion darling. Parker spotted in one of her character's more outlandish looks while filming for the new season of "And Just Like That." “Definitely too much,” read one critique under @everyoutfitonsatc’s post of Jessica Parker in the latter look. So has Bradshaw’s style really changed, or have we? It seems like a ripe topic for the character’s newspaper column, and one Jessica Parker has thoughts on too.

1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft by the Indiana Fever, scored a game-high 21 points in the team’s preseason game Friday against the Dallas Wings. I think it’s a good kickoff to the WNBA season. Ogunbowale finished with 19 points, including nine points in the fourth quarter, to lift the Wings to the preseason victory. Why this math professor is putting actors in classrooms

Loh’s way of doing that is by creating Zoom classes that feel more like social media than traditional learning. Called live.poshenloh.com, the platform employs exceptionally talented US high school students to teach mathematics via livestream. Loh came up with the idea during the pandemic, when livestream learning became commonplace, but not necessarily engaging for students. “Most people had the experience that a Zoom math class was very effective at putting children to sleep,” he told CNN. “I didn’t realize that mathematics and the performing arts could harmonize together in such a wonderful way.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump is seeking to delay his March 25 hush money trial until the Supreme Court rules on the presidential immunity claims he raised in another of his criminal cases. Trump contends he is immune for prosecution for conduct alleged to involve official acts during his tenure in office. His lawyers argue some of the evidence and alleged acts in the hush money case overlap with his time in the White House and constitute official acts. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments April 25, a month after the scheduled start of jury selection in Trump’s hush money case. A federal judge last year rejected Trump’s claim that allegations in the hush-money indictment involved official duties, nixing his bid to move the case from state court to federal court.

I wake up every day at 4 a.m. to get a couple hours of paid work before my daughter wakes up. I can't afford full-time childcare, so I have her with me some days of the week. I can usually get a couple of hours of paid work done before my daughter wakes up, then my attention shifts. We can’t afford full time childcare with our current income, even though we both need to work full-time hours. Our day care offers a sliding scale fee structure, which feels like a privilege, but it’s somehow also still unaffordable.

CNN —The biggest inferno in Texas history is being fueled by winds and high temperatures as it rages Sunday, threatening to incinerate more buildings, cattle and livelihoods across the Texas Panhandle while residents sift through ashes of what used to be homes. The fire, which is just one of five blazes currently scorching the Texas Panhandle, has already killed two people and destroyed over 500 structures, state officials said Saturday. Texas A&M Forest Service spokesperson Jason Nedlo told CNN Saturday that the blaze could grow over the weekend due to the weather conditions. Because the Texas Panhandle had higher-than-average rainfall this winter, there is more grass – fuel – to burn. A “red flag” warning, which indicates critical fire weather conditions, remains in effect for Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle through midnight Sunday.

So far, the Smokehouse Creek Fire has spread across more than 1 million acres and has become the biggest Texas wildfire on record. And the fire is just one of five blazes currently scorching the Texas Panhandle, destroying as many as 500 structures. I decided to leave investment banking because I'd lost the meaning and purpose of my work, and I wanted to find it. Becoming a managing director wasn't a specific goal when I started in investment banking. I realized money is just part of the puzzle. They expose decades of American corporate philosophy gone awry. A good American company isn’t just a vehicle for financial returns; it is first and foremost an employer, a contributor to economic and/or technological innovation, and a source of US power. But it’s clear that what Boeing — and the entire American corporate body politic — needs is nothing short of a philosophical counterrevolution. Over these three decades of plenty for Boeing’s shareholders, the company’s staff was asked to penny-pinch. Boeing’s stock cratered, and France’s Airbus , a rival once colloquially known as “Scare Bus,” started to eat the American company’s lunch .

If the Supreme Court ultimately rules against Trump it would almost certainly end his campaign for another term. But because the court expedited the earlier stages of the Trump ballot case, it is likely the court will want to move quickly to decide the case, potentially within a matter of weeks. If Trump is removed from the ballot in Colorado, Roberts predicted that states would eventually attempt to knock other candidates out of future elections. WASHINGTON (AP) — How it began: President Joe Biden was urgently seeking more money from Congress to aid Ukraine and Israel. On Dec. 12, the White House dispatched senior officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, to join the negotiations. It was never entirely clear what the White House strategy was to advance the border compromise in the House should it make it out of the Senate. With that, the deal that the White House and many in the Senate thought would pass was headed for failure. And Biden allies are intent on making Republicans take the hit for any further scenes of chaos at the border.
