Apple on Monday charged into the artificial intelligence craze with a new iPhone lineup that marks the company’s latest attempt to latch onto a technology trend and transform it into a cultural phenomenon. The four different iPhone 16 models will all come equipped with special chips needed to power a suite if AI tools that Apple hopes will make its marquee product even more indispensable and reverse a recent sales slump. Most of Apple’s AI functions will roll out as part of a free software update to iOS 18, the operating system that will power the iPhone 16 coming out in December. English will be the featured language at launch but an update enabling other languages will come out next year, according to Apple. Although Apple is releasing a free version of its operating system to propel its on-device AI features, the chip needed to run the technology is only available on the iPhone 16 lineup and the high-end iPhone 15 models that came out a year ago.

There is no national data on shopping cart losses, but US retailers lose an estimated tens of millions of dollars every year replacing lost and damaged carts, say shopping cart experts. They pay vendors to rescue stray carts and fork over fines to municipalities for violating laws on shopping carts. “It is the shopping cart.” Another New York Times article in 1957 called the trend “Cart-Napping.”There’s even a book, “The Stray Shopping Carts of Eastern North America: A Guide to Field Identification,” dedicated to the phenomenon and a system of identification for stray shopping carts, much like guides for bird-watching. Coin-lock shopping cart systems are popular in Europe, and Poulos said more US companies are requesting coin-lock systems in response to the costs of runaway shopping carts.

My New Year’s resolution is to make it through 2023 without a nastygram from the nice folks in expense accounting. But I get plenty of automated emails not-too-subtly nudging me to do my expenses already. I’ve had more than a few expense reports returned for missing receipts or other missing details. Adjusting to new rules in a new job that has me crisscrossing the country more than ever is part of the reason. Mostly, though, I—and millions of others—need to do a better job of corralling receipts and filing reports as soon as possible after a trip so they don’t pile up.

After two decades of corralling Democrats, often against their will, Speaker Pelosi says she’ll return to the rank and file next year. Republicans who disagree with Mrs. Pelosi on practically everything can still learn from her how to effectively wield power. Mrs. Pelosi came to Washington to pass laws and influence policy, not because she wanted to be a social-media influencer or get a retirement gig as a TV pundit. When Democrats were devising ObamaCare, she insisted that they go big, mocking anything less as “Kiddie Care.”
