The survival budget considers expenses such as food, housing, childcare, transportation, and healthcare, in addition to taxes and an emergency fund. Here's what ALICE household survival budgets for a typical family of four look like across the country. The total number of ALICE households jumped 12% between 2010 and 2022, particularly impacting single parents and people of color. During these 12 years, the percent change in single-male-headed ALICE households grew 35%. "Part of the survival budget is there's no savings in there," Hoopes said.

Meta may need such access to make its generative AI tools, like Meta AI, more effective for users and more competitive in the increasingly crowded market of generative AI search tools and chatbots, the people said. User posts and comments on Facebook or Instagram are not necessarily the type of high-quality training data that generative AI chatbots and search tools need to generate quality outputs. Previously, Zuckerberg said he did not expect the generative AI boom. The US Copyright Office is considering new rules to cover generative AI. Major rival tech companies now fiercely competing in generative AI have already entered into deals with news publishers and media outlets for more access to content to be used as model training data.

CNN —Nvidia announced a 10-for-1 stock split on Wednesday, making buying shares in the red-hot semiconductor company more accessible for individual investors. Five years ago, an investor could have purchased Nvidia stock for less than $50 a share. Nvidia’s (NVDA) announcement, which came in its quarterly earnings report, means that each common share will be split into 10 smaller shares, effectively cutting the price of investing in the company. Nvidia shares rose as much as 4% in after-hours trading following the report. Still, some investors had raised questions ahead of Wednesday’s report about just how long Nvidia could keep the rally going.

However, a new study finds regular use of fish oil supplements may increase, not reduce, the risk of first-time stroke and atrial fibrillation among people in good cardiovascular health. Nearly one-third of those people, who were followed for an average of 12 years, said they regularly used fish oil supplements. Over-the-counter fish oil suffers from a lack of purity and consistency, as well as the potential contaminants and heavy metals such as mercury that come with fish, Freeman said. “In addition, studies over the last 10 years have not been very positive for over-the-counter fish oil,” he added. “Fish oil was either having no benefit or in some cases it may harm, such as with stroke and AFib.

That's not a lot of wiggle room if the stock reacts negatively to earnings: if the stock undercuts $915 (and stays below it), the breakout would be nullified. In other words, if an upside gap is filled this time instead, the market could be telling us that something has changed. In other words, NVDA has had many years of success both as a company and as a stock. It would take a lot more than a reaction to a single earnings report to change that. BEFORE MAKING ANY FINANCIAL DECISIONS, YOU SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER SEEKING ADVICE FROM YOUR OWN FINANCIAL OR INVESTMENT ADVISOR.

The Notting Hill of the 1990s was still socially heterodox and shabby chic, a neighborhood where a group of 30-something professionals could plausibly have ended up. Even in the late 1990s, such access to disposable income marked the characters in “Notting Hill” out as privileged. Yet, in the 1990s, Notting Hill, long a center of Caribbean immigrant culture and the site of the annual Notting Hill Carnival, underwent a rapid process of gentrification. Between 1995 and 1999, Notting Hill house prices rose by 75%. The colorful terraced houses of Notting Hill, which these days sell for millions of pounds.

Re “Dear Boomers, the Student Protesters Are Not Idiots,” by Elizabeth Spiers (Opinion guest essay, nytimes.com, May 17):Ms. Spiers’s characterization of the student protests misses the mark. As a recent college graduate myself, I don’t disagree that college students “are capable of having well thought-out principles,” but the principles underlying these protests are troubling. Ms. Spiers alludes to my generation possessing elevated moral sensibilities due to our experience with mass shootings. If these chants are part of well thought-out principles and not naïveté, then it behooves us to scrutinize the moral framework that informs these principles. Why is it that these protests project outrage toward Israel’s conduct in the war but conveniently elide the horrific details of Oct. 7?

Basic income has become a trending strategy to combat poverty in cities nationwide. ARPA funds have been used to partially or fully fund most US basic-income pilots so far, but funds are set to expire. While philanthropy and nonprofit work have been central to basic-income pilots, they are not always a long-term or large-scale funding solution. More GBI programs are electing to focus on specific groups of participants, like low-income parents with children and foster youth. The program is funded through the Temporary Aid to Needy Families Program (TANF), an existing federal cash assistance program for low-income families.

Landing a data analyst job helped me achieve the life I had dreamed ofI started looking at job boards and saw a ton of data analyst positions, with an average starting salary of around $70,000, in 2018. I don't feel that working in Big Tech is worth itWhen people think about working a tech job, many think of Big Tech companies like Tesla and Meta, which offer the highest salaries and have a certain air of prestige. Although they might not be quite as high as Big Tech roles, the salaries at non-tech companies can be super competitive, especially if you focus on non-tech companies in the Fortune 500. When you apply for tech jobs at non-tech companies, you're not competing against people who are trying to be the best in the world. AdvertisementI advise anyone hoping to land their first data analyst job at a non-tech company to start looking at their current job as an asset and find where it overlaps with data analyst jobs.

A Business Insider analysis of US Census Bureau data reveals that while 52.7% of Utah's population falls in the middle class, just 42.3% of New Yorkers are middle class. Pew Research Center defines being middle class as earning between two-thirds and double each state's median income. Still, the median income per state can be as high as $101,000 and as low as $52,700, meaning that being middle class in one state could be either lower or upper class in another state. Many on the lower end of the middle class are particularly worried about having enough to meet all their daily needs while also saving for retirement. Do you feel middle class?

The stock has another 20% rise left in it before the bubble deflates, Capital Economics predicted. That's because stocks tend to inflate rapidly right before the end of a bubble, the firm said. AdvertisementInvestors on the lookout for signs of a bubble should expect the stock market to be pumped up by another 20% before correcting, Capital Economics researchers said. According to John Higgins, Capital Economics' chief market economist, stocks look like they're in a late-stage bubble, meaning equities are in for a steep rally before the bubble eventually bursts. I think that it's a simple one really that involves a bubble inflating in the stock market," he said, pointing to the excitement for big tech.
