Last May, Samir Bhavnani, a 47-year-old tech executive from San Diego, was planning a trip to Palm Springs, Calif., where he planned to propose to his girlfriend. “And $595 plus $595 doesn’t equal $2,300,” Mr. Bhavnani said. “Taxes, host fees and service fees basically doubled the price. I asked the owner what the fee breakout was, and they said it was $300 for cleaning and $300 for ‘air-conditioning.’ This is Palm Springs. On July 1, a sweeping new state law will ban hidden fees on purchases — including event tickets, hotel rooms and food delivery services — by requiring businesses to include all mandatory fees or last-minute charges in their advertised and displayed price.

All-white interiors are impractical and hard to maintain. It's hard to keep an all-white room looking clean. Tom Merton/Getty ImagesArchitect and interior designer Kobi Karp of Kobi Karp Architecture and Interior Design told Business Insider that the all-white, minimalist trend isn't practical for most homes. This style is popular in magazines, so designers are frequently asked to do it, but people are often left with potentially exorbitant cleaning and maintenance costs," he said. Instead of going all white, try a rich blue or sage green that imparts a cool and clean vibe without the laborious upkeep.

US economy added a whopping 272,000 jobs in May

At a time when Americans and the Federal Reserve are clamoring for clear-cut data about the state and trajectory of the economy, Friday’s jobs report was much more opaque than everyone had hoped. Employment fell in the household survey, while unemployment increased to just shy of 6.5 million and pushing the unemployment rate to the threshold of 4%. Service-providing industries accounted for the bulk of the month’s job gains, with health care and social assistance continuing to lead the way, with 83,500 jobs added. “Don’t get overly spooked by the rise in the unemployment rate,” Bunker wrote. “The labor market is still gliding toward a soft landing.”

Unemployment roseThe unemployment rate rose to 4% from 3.9%. The rise in unemployment can be traced to the findings of the household survey (one of two surveys that feed into the monthly jobs report). Compared to the establishment survey that showed the robust 272,000 net gain in jobs, the household survey faltered. That’s in the service sector, everything from personal care services, dry cleaning, cleaning and home maintenance and vehicle maintenance, she said.

No matter how much you like your colleagues, don't think of your workplace as a family, says Airbnb CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky. Chesky learned this lesson from experience, he told Wharton psychologist Adam Grant's "ReThinking" podcast in May. In 2020, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Chesky penned a note to employees explaining that the company would conduct layoffs. And it is true that a company's not a family. "We used to refer to ourselves as a family, and then we did have to fire people, or they'd have to leave the company, and you don't fire members of your family," he added.

For example, workers in accommodation and food services saw annual earnings growth peak at 16.1% in December 2021, according to ZipRecruiter data. Then there is the Swiss Water Process, which decaffeinates the beans by soaking them in warm water. The Clean Label Project, an organization that tests consumer products for hidden industrial and environmental contaminants, has detected methylene chloride in several brands of coffee. What you can do nowWhether or not the FDA eventually bans methylene chloride is a decision that could take years.

She said it's the worst water crisis she has experienced in her 40 years in the neighborhood. Water levels are running desperately low, particularly in poorer areas, resulting in sky-high costs for water and a quickly dwindling supply. City and state government authorities are trying to get the situation under control with emergency measures such as nationalizing water tankers and putting a cap on water costs. The crisis was a long time coming, said Shashank Palur, a Bengaluru-based hydrologist with the think tank Water, Environment, Land and Livelihood Labs.

The apartment is two floors, with both bedrooms, the full bath, and the kitchen and dining area on the top floor, and a half-bath and living room in the basement. So, by having the bed in my room, it made my room also his, in a sense. Besides sleeping in the same bed at night, we treat our separate bedrooms the same way we did as roommates.

CNN —Archaeologists say they have discovered what may be the largest mass grave ever excavated in Europe at a site in southern Germany. The remains are thought to date from the 1632-1633 plague epidemic. This evidence led the team to conclude that the older group of remains probably dates from the 1632-1633 epidemic. “I personally expect the number to be at 2,000 or even above, making it the biggest mass grave in Europe,” he said. Next up is work to complete the excavation, as well as cleaning and analyzing bone material, Langbein told CNN.

“Minors were used to clean dangerous kill floor equipment such as head splitters, jaw pullers, meat bandsaws, and neck clippers,” the Labor Department said in a news release Wednesday. CNN has reached out to Fayette Janitorial Services and STF for comment. To fulfill janitorial service contracts, the janitorial company employed at least 24 children between the ages of 13 and 17 to work overnight shifts cleaning dangerous equipment, the complaint says. According to the filing, the janitorial company employed 15 children, as young as 13-years-old, in Virginia and at least nine children in Iowa on its overnight sanitation shifts. On January 10, 2022, Fayette hired one minor “to work the overnight sanitation shift at the Perdue Facility, when he was 13 years old,” said the complaint.

Last year, China was surpassed by India as the world’s most populous country. And while some women stop working entirely while raising their children, it makes returning to the workforce incredibly difficult. Women who have children may see a 12% to 17% drop in their wages, the report said, citing research from multiple papers. “Because the current social environment in China is not conducive to women’s childbirth, the time cost and opportunity cost for women to have children are too high,” the report said. The report warned that the falling birthrate could deeply impact economic growth, people’s overall happiness and China’s global standing.
