Chu pleaded guilty to having seditiously worn a T-shirt with the protest slogan “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times.”The slogan was chanted on the streets during the months of pro-democracy demonstrations that rocked Hong Kong in 2019. Chu told police the “Liberate Hong Kong” slogan called for the return of Hong Kong to British rule and that he wore the shirt to remind people of the protests, the court heard. Chung pleaded guilty on Thursday to three counts of seditious acts for writing slogans advocating Hong Kong independence and “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times” on the back of bus seats in March and April. Beijing imposed a national security law in 2020 to quash the months-long protests in the financial hub. In March 2024, Hong Kong passed a second new security law.

At the beginning of her decades-long career in broadcast journalism, a network executive told Connie Chung that she’d never make it in the industry. In her 40 years as a journalist, Chung anchored for almost every major network. Instead of shrinking away from it, Chung chose to develop an “armor.”“I decided I’d be a guy,” she said. Chung also reflected on the impact she had on the Asian American community, shedding light on the time she got to meet a group of women who were named after her. Some of the women, born in the U.S. to immigrant parents or immigrants themselves, were given the name “Connie” because Chung was the only recognizable Chinese American face on TV.

Since Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, Trump has constantly attempted to portray her as weak on immigration and crime. On Friday, Harris also chose not to mention mass deportation during a radio interview with Univision, when the host asked her to summarize her argument to undecided Hispanic voters. “There is a way in which those [crime and immigration] issues in particular are also about bigger things,” said Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of BlackPAC, a group working to mobilize Black voters for Harris and Democrats. And many of those voters might recoil from these Trump policies on crime and immigration if they heard more about them. “What he is hoping is that the Black voters who he is [courting] don’t see that stuff,” Shropshire said.

Little is released to the public about how, why and where federal air marshals operate. But air marshals are working undercover, with concealed guns and the power to make arrests. In recent decades, the responsibilities of air marshals have expanded to include securing the country’s entire transportation system. Right now, domestic airlines treat traveling families differently. A handful, such as JetBlue Airways, American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, guarantee that parents can sit next to their children. But on the others, parents are left to pay for more expensive assigned seats or to bank on the good will of strangers. President Biden even called on Congress to pass legislation targeting fees for families to sit together. “Many airlines still don’t guarantee family seating, which means parents wonder if they’ll have to pay extra just to be seated with their young child,” Mr. Buttigieg said in a statement.

For nearly two decades, Hollywood has seemingly missed no opportunity to sound the alarm about climate change. So it was startling when the weather-focused “Twisters” arrived from Universal Pictures this month with no mention of climate change at all. If ever there was a perfect vehicle to carry Hollywood’s progressive climate change messaging — a big-budget movie about people caught in worsening storm patterns — wasn’t this it? Apparently not. Movies should not be about “preaching a message,” Lee Isaac Chung, who directed “Twisters,” said in a prerelease interview that served as a dog whistle to conservative ticket buyers.

The global software outage last week caused thousands of travelers flying in the United States and internationally to have their flights delayed, canceled or both. In the days that followed, some airlines were trying to reboot critical computer systems affected by the outage, with many of their passengers still stranded at airports. During a travel meltdown, it may seem nearly impossible for air travelers to find immediate help. Passengers who foot the bill for last-minute lodging and other expenses are entitled to reimbursement if their flights were impacted by an event in the airlines’ control, like the CrowdStrike outage. [Are you seeking compensation from an airline following the Crowdstrike outage?

If you were flying — or planned to fly — last week, your travel plans might have been snarled by an I.T. outage that kneecapped myriad industries and critical services worldwide. On Friday, July 19, alone, nearly 14 percent of the scheduled flights in the United States were canceled and 56 percent were delayed, according to Cirium, an aviation data company. Did you get help from the airlines in paying for any meals, transportation or accommodations? We want to hear how the airlines did.

A day after a tech outage disrupted industries worldwide, airlines are digging themselves out from the fallout of thousands of delayed and canceled flights that have left travelers stranded and searching to find a way home over the weekend. On Saturday morning, delays and cancellations had ebbed, and both domestic and international airlines said they expected to return to near normal operations. But higher than usual cancellation rates are still likely throughout the day, as airlines continue to maneuver planes and their flight crews back into position. Yesterday’s software outages immobilized airlines, affecting numerous functions, including calculating aircraft weight, checking in and communicating with travelers. The waits stacked up for passengers, and some were left with no option other than to sleep at airports.

‘Twisters’ and the Appeal of the Sequel

That movie is “Twister,” the story of a lovably eclectic band of tornado chasers who follow soon-to-be-divorced Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt right into the eye of many storms. We got cows.”One friend said she watched it every single time she happened upon it on cable. As Janet Maslin wrote in The Times when the movie came out, “Somehow ‘Twister’ stays as uptempo and exuberant as a roller-coaster ride, neatly avoiding the idea of real danger.”This week, “Twisters,” a sequel to “Twister,” directed by Lee Isaac Chung, arrived in theaters. I didn’t have a deep-rooted relationship with the original film, but, fresh off my positive viewing experience, I didn’t feel like I needed another chapter. Why can’t we just make one good thing and then make another new thing that’s also good?

The current Republican platform doesn’t mention global warming at all, and GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump has denied the scientific consensus on climate change. Travel plans across the world were thrown into disarray on Friday, as a global technology outage disrupted businesses and services — including air travel — leaving thousands of flights canceled or delayed across the United States and beyond. While service was slowly recovering by midmorning Eastern time, the ripple effect was still snarling travel plans as delayed and canceled flights created a buildup of passengers waiting at airports, and some planes and crews out of position. “The anxiety is getting up a little,” said Adonis Ajayi, 35, at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Friday morning. Messages posted on social media by travelers worldwide showed flights grounded, some terminal monitors down and crowds of stranded passengers waiting at airport gates and customer service desks. Some passengers at one airport in India had to stand in long lines to obtain handwritten boarding passes.

My name is Lee Isaac Chung and I am the director of “Twisters.” So this is a scene that happens about halfway through the film. Other interesting actors in this sequence, we have James Paxton, who is actually the son of Bill Paxton. So any time we’re filming inside of this swimming pool, there were people outside, our crew, who were destroying the set. The swimming pool had actually never been there. We had found this motel in which there were three separate structures within the motel.
