They have argued Boeing should face new criminal charges and pay a fine as great as $24.9 billion. In May, the Justice Department said it was looking into bringing criminal charges against Boeing once again due to a potential violation of that January 2021 agreement. Arlen said it is common for smaller companies to be forced out of business by criminal charges and the penalties that follow.

But that's not what it looked like on Thursday when Biden floundered in his debate performance against former President Donald Trump, political strategists told Business Insider. "It was a disaster for President Biden," Alex Zdan, GOP political strategist and former New Jersey Republican candidate for US Senate, told BI. Where the similarities endAnother Trump presidency would mean a vastly different America than if Biden won a second term. When BI reached out for comment, representatives for the Trump campaign declined to answer questions about similarities between Trump and Biden. To have a chance, Biden will need that constituency to ignore his poor debate performance and questions about his age.

Rare purple pigment found in Bronze Age pottery

CPA Media Pte Ltd/Alamy Stock PhotoAncient Greeks and the Romans considered Tyrian purple, first developed in the Bronze Age, an elite, royal color. But the recipe for the long-lasting pigment, made using Mediterranean sea snails, disappeared with the fall of the Byzantine Empire. Now, researchers have found the precious pigment within pottery fragments containing 3,600-year-old purple dye from a Bronze Age workshop in Kolonna on the Greek island of Aegina. Life for a vulnerable child in the Stone Age would have been difficult because Neanderthals moved from place to place. Trump and Biden had their first face-off on Thursday evening, breaking with election norms by holding a debate months before voters head to the polls in November. CNN's fact-checker, Daniel Dale, estimated that Trump said false or misleading statements 30 times during the debate. Throughout the Thursday debate, Biden's voice sounded raspy as the president struggled at moments to hold in a cough. "That's a question we can't answer because we've never had a debate this early," Siegfried told BI.

China expelled two former defense ministers from the ruling Communist Party over alleged corruption Thursday, the latest sign of a secretive crackdown sweeping the country's elite. The two former defense ministers, Li and Wei, were expelled by the party's leadership for "serious violation of party discipline and the law," Chinese state news agencies announced early Thursday. Li was also stripped of his title as state councilor at the time, a rare move — officials from the inner circle of the ruling Communist Party are seldom axed. Wei, who preceded Li as defense minister, was similarly accused Thursday of "accepting money and gifts in violation of relevant rules."

A Japanese pharmaceutical company is investigating 80 deaths possibly linked to a yeast-containing supplement it sells in Japan, the country’s health ministry said Friday, in a shocking increase from an earlier revelation that is focusing attention on how supplements are regulated. The company, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical, in March had reported five deaths potentially linked to its CholesteHelp rice and red-yeast pills. In response to the sudden surge in reported deaths, Health Minister Keizo Takemi said it was “extremely regrettable” that Kobayashi Pharmaceutical had not updated the ministry sooner. The company, which is based in Osaka, had not provided new information on deaths potentially linked to CholesteHelp since March. CholesteHelp has been recalled in Japan and China, the only countries the supplement was sold in, according to a spokeswoman for Kobayashi Pharmaceutical.

They started the night hoping that President Biden would use the first debate of 2024 to his advantage, that he would finally quash fears about his age and give the impression of a determined statesman compared with former President Donald J. Trump. But for the roughly 40 Democrats who gathered Thursday night at a union hall in Sacramento, it did not take long for the mood to descend into something between grim despair and mild panic. Within minutes, even ardent supporters in the capital of California fell silent, exchanging glances and acknowledging quietly that Mr. Biden, his virtues aside, seemed less forceful than Mr. Trump, and weary. Toward the end, some of the younger attendees left before the debate was over. “Neither of them inspires confidence,” said Dubrea Sanders, 25.

Gold set for third quarterly gain; traders await US inflation data
  + stars: | 2024-06-28 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Gold prices eased on Friday, but were set for a third straight quarterly rise, while investors looked forward to U.S. inflation data due later in the day for more clarity on the Federal Reserve's interest rate-cut timeline. After adding to its gold reserves for 18 consecutive months, official data from the People's Bank of China (PBOC) showed its holdings were flat in May. A survey by the World Gold Council, however, found that more central banks may increase gold reserves within 12 months. Gold rose more than 1% in the previous session after data showed a continued, though moderate, slowdown in U.S. economic activity. A soft set of PCE figures is required to keep hopes of Fed easing alive and further support gold, City Index senior analyst Matt Simpson said.
