While GM has withdrawn most of its previously announced electric vehicle targets, the automaker believes its EV sales momentum is finally building thanks to an expanding lineup of all-electric vehicles – spanning a price range of roughly $35,000 to more than $300,000. EV sales data provided to CNBC by the Detroit automaker, which publicly reports sales quarterly, shows a notable increase for GM through August. GM sold nearly 21,000 EVs in the U.S. in July and August – almost matching its full second-quarter EV sales. GM's EV sales through August were up about 70% compared with a year earlier. It still remained more than 20,000 units shy of Hyundai/Kia EV sales through last month.

There are currently a handful of electric trucks for purchase in the U.S. market: the Tesla Cybertruck, Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T and General Motors' GMC Hummer EV, GMC Sierra Denali and Chevrolet Silverado. The GMC Hummer and Rivian also have SUV versions, which feature similar functions as their pickup counterparts but in different forms. So it might surprise investors that the automaker believes its new path to profitability for electric vehicles will first be led by smaller, more affordable vehicles. “We’re quite convinced that the highest adoption rates for electric vehicles will be in the affordable segment on the lower size-end of the range,” he told CNBC on Thursday. Gjaja’s comments came a day after the automaker announced updates to its EV strategy that will cost up to $1.9 billion. Gjaja said the decision wasn’t taken lightly, especially the cancellation of the upcoming three-row vehicle, which Ford CEO Jim Farley and other executives had been touting as a game changer for several years. He said the Ford, in part, developed the skunkworks team to prove that Ford can compete against the Chinese automakers.

EV fast chargers – the big tall units that look like major appliances – aren’t generally designed to completely fill an EV’s batteries. A line of EVs wait to charge at Electrify America chargers in East Brunswick, New Jersey, on July 6. At 10 of the busiest EV fast charging stations in California, Electrify America has enacted a strict limit. There can also be other legitimate reasons a driver may want to charge to 100% at a fast charger, said Barrosa. Cases like these are why Electrify America probably won’t institute an overall charging cap at charging stations near major highways, he said.

That's bad news for Tesla, especially as a yearlong slowdown in EV demand is beginning to impact the EV leader's sales. That's off from 55% share a year ago and nearly 80% market share back in 2020, according to Experian data. AdvertisementThat leaves a potential opening for traditional automakers at a time when the EV market is getting tougher. That's already helped the brand chip away at Tesla's market share. And at Ford, EV sales were up 61% in the second quarter, trailing only Tesla in sales so far in 2023.

GM indefinitely delays Cruise Origin autonomous vehicle

DETROIT – General Motors is indefinitely delaying production of its Origin autonomous vehicle as its embattled Cruise self-driving unit attempts to relaunch operations. The Detroit automaker said Tuesday its majority-owned robotaxi unit will instead focus on using the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt for development of autonomous vehicles. Cruise has been using now-discontinued Bolts for autonomous vehicle development for several years. It was not immediately clear how many Origin vehicles the facility has produced, however it was previously reported that ex-Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt, a cofounder, told staff that hundreds of Origin vehicles had been produced. Cruise in February 2022 petitioned U.S. regulators seeking permission to deploy up to 2,500 self-driving Origin vehicles annually without the human controls.

Barra's comments come a week after she raised concerns about GM hitting its North American EV production capacity target. The entire Buick brand has targeted being fully electric by 2030, as part of GM's plans to exclusively offer consumer EVs by 2035. GM previously announced plans for four of the multibillion-dollar plants in the U.S. by 2026. Barra on Tuesday said the company would grow cell production in a "meaningful cadence." GM CFO Paul Jacobson declined to discuss potential plans to delay or cancel the automaker's future EV battery cell plants, aside from the two facilities making cells in Ohio and Tennessee.

Sales of sports cars have been steadily declining for about three decades, but there has been one exception to that trend. The Chevrolet Corvette has recently stormed back to near-record popularity. sold 53,785 of the eighth-generation Corvettes, or C8s, worldwide last year, just 22 shy of its top sales year in 1979. Americans bought about 34,000 of those, including Stingray coupes that start from $66,000, nearly twice as many Corvettes as they bought in 2019. The car’s revival has been driven by a change that may not seem a big deal to the average commuter.

The workplace drama I'm now highly invested in is from the Mohawk Chevrolet dealership in Ballston Spa, New York.
