CNN —The first image of the Titan submersible sitting at the bottom of the ocean following its catastrophic implosion last year was shared by the US Coast Guard on Monday as investigators opened a hearing into the tragedy. In the photo released Monday, the submersible’s broken tail cone is seen on the hazy blue floor of the North Atlantic Ocean. The tail cone was severed from the rest of the vessel, its edges ragged, while a ripped fragment of the vessel is seen nearby. CNN —The US Coast Guard on Monday will begin a multi-day hearing to examine the loss of the Titan – the ill-fated submersible authorities said imploded in the North Atlantic Ocean in June 2023, killing all five people aboard during a dive to the wreckage of the Titanic. The public hearing will be conducted by the Marine Board of Investigation that was convened within days of the submersible’s disappearance. The MBI – the highest level of inquiry by the Coast Guard – was tasked with reviewing the cause of the tragedy and offering recommendations, including about potential civil penalties and criminal prosecution. The MBI is made up of numerous Coast Guard officials and at least two from the National Transportation Safety Board, according to a list provided by the Coast Guard. When the investigation is complete, the US Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board will each conduct an independent analysis and complete reports, Neubauer said Sunday.

Tropical Storm Debby, which came ashore as a category 1 hurricane along the Florida coast early Monday, will move across the Southeast on Tuesday at roughly the speed of a human walking. Like Debby, both storms stalled over the region and became reminders that a hurricane’s hazards can persist and intensify for days after it makes landfall. Even small changes in the steering currents could result in Debby shifting and changing where the rain falls. The storm will most likely move slightly offshore, allowing some restrengthening before the storm turns north and moves back inland. Police have released video stills that show three alleged suspects in the killing of "General Hospital" actor Johnny Wactor. Wactor, 37, was fatally shot in May after he interrupted a catalytic converter theft on his car in downtown Los Angeles. The suspects cannot be clearly seen, but police said the suspect who shot Wactor "has a tattoo above the left eye and on the right cheek." The Los Angeles Police Department is asking for the public's help with identifying the three suspects. CNN —Regular aspirin use may keep the oncologist away, at least when it comes to colorectal cancer, according to a new study, and people with unhealthy lifestyles seemed to see the greatest benefit. Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death worldwide, predicted to cause more than 52,500 deaths in the US alone in 2023. The use of two or more regular-strength aspirin or six or more low-dose aspirin per week was considered regular aspirin use for the purpose of this research. Those regular users were found to have an 18% lower risk of developing colorectal cancer than non-users. They argue that doctors should weigh different lifestyle risk factors when they determine whether someone should take regular aspirin to prevent colorectal cancer.
