“I’ve done a lot of cases that are considered no-win,” Bragg told CNN at the time, in December 2021. Though Bragg’s ambitions are widely considered to be less lofty than some of his predecessors, the Trump trial will likely write both his political future and legacy. Two months into office, Bragg was confronted by two senior attorneys leading the Trump investigation. When Bragg refused to authorize them to seek an indictment they abruptly and noisily resigned, putting additional pressure on the new district attorney. Trump eventually paid $2 million of his own money to a group of charities, and the foundation was dissolved.

And so I think it’s a net positive.”Even if Trump is convicted of a felony, Hudson predicted it wouldn’t “have an impact” on his candidates in swing districts. There are a limited number of House districts truly at play in the 2024 elections – given many district lines are gerrymandered in a way to protect one party over the other. Democrats have their eyes set on the 17 Biden districts, which will take the race for the House from New York to California. A total of 170 Democrats voted against the legislation, accusing Republicans of exploiting the tragic death of a nursing student in order to score political points. “We’ve pretty much seen the Republicans, especially House Republicans, wait to hear from Trump in terms of deciding whether they even want to move legislation forward.

UBS is out with its 2024 outlook, and it expects some wild swings for markets next year. The Wall Street firm on Monday said it sees the S & P 500 ending next year at 4,850, roughly 5% above Monday's close of 4,622.44. Stocks have been on a tear recently, with the S & P 500 riding a six-week winning streak. "The large spread between current strength and expected weakness presents a dilemma for investors," Golub wrote Monday. Goldman Sachs' David Kostin said he anticipates the S & P 500 will end next year at 4,700 , just a stone's throw from where the broader index is currently trading.

Bitcoin could hit a new record high now that Blackrock's Larry Fink is a believer, Mike Novogratz said. "The most important thing that happened this year in bitcoin is Larry Fink," he said on Bloomberg TV. "I think the most important thing that happened this year in bitcoin is Larry Fink," the Galaxy CEO said in an interview on Bloomberg TV with David Rubenstein. This pivoting sentiment could help bitcoin surpass its $69,000 record set in 2021, Novogratz said, further supported by a future cut in interest rates. The token stands out for its use of an eyeball scanner, used to establish unique digital identities per user.

A mid-term by-election to replace Johnson is taking place on Thursday, alongside two other by-elections to replace MPs elsewhere in the country. The baseline view for Goldman Sachs is that the S&P 500 will rise 7% over the next 12 months. If a recession occurs, the S&P 500 would fall 23% to 3,400, Goldman Sachs said. The warning comes as the S&P 500 is currently in the midst of a bull market run, led by a rally around mega-cap tech stocks. According to Goldman, breadth drawdowns are historically followed by significant slides in the S&P 500. Historically, when the S&P 500 trades this high, it is usually followed by a 14% drawdown over the next year, the analysts wrote.

EQT's pet-drug foray could yield tame returns
  + stars: | 2023-04-14 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, April 14 (Reuters Breakingviews) - EQT (EQTAB.ST) is turning to furry friends to defy the buyout market’s record slowdown. Still, it looks a stretch to secure the sort of 20% returns buyout shops usually seek. EQT’s offer values Dechra at 27 times its EBITDA for the last 12 months. Bullishly assume the group can grow revenue at 10% annually, improve the current 28% EBITDA margin to 30%, and sell after five years at a superior 28 times EBITDA multiple. Even financing a quarter of the deal with debt at 6 times EBITDA, the deal’s internal rate of return would only amount to 17%.
What this portends for stocks going into year end is unclear, but given how low volatility is just now it is reasonable to assume investor demand for protection and hedging will rise. Afraid of missing out on a year-end rally, investors are now paying a premium for equity 'call' options over 'puts'. Benchmark volatility gauges like the VIX index of implied vol on the S&P 500 or the V2TX index of implied vol on euro stocks rise when demand for put options spikes. The VIX has fallen recently to near a two-month low even as the S&P 500 has surged into the green and lurched back into the red. By mid-October the S&P 500 was down 25% and ripe for a bounce.
Despite a recent rally, RBA's Dan Suzuki says the bear market is far from over. In former market bottoms, investors who waited profited more than those who bought early, he said. Suzuki shared 5 sectors to invest in to position against slowing growth while still making returns. "There's always a chance that the bear market is over, but it seems unlikely in my view," he told Insider recently over email. But investors would be better served if they considered a more holistic view, Suzuki explained on the October 24 segment of CNBC's "Closing Bell."
