Neighborhood names are also shorthand for your rent or mortgage payments. In 2017, real-estate brokers in the historically Black New York neighborhood of Harlem sparked backlash when they tried to rebrand its south end as SoHa. At their best, new neighborhood names bring people together over a shared sense of pride in their little corner of the world. Along the way, these neighborhood names have veered into parody territory. I'm not saying that neighborhood names should be set in stone — in fact, I think it's natural for them to evolve alongside their populations.

In 2017, fewer than half of the largest U.S. cities offered formalized pickleball courts. "We have found New York City parks to really understand the popularity of pickleball and also the need for more courts," said Cannon. Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the FTX cryptocurrency exchange who was convicted of fraud and conspiracy, was transferred out of a Brooklyn detention center on Wednesday morning, his spokesman said. Before the transfer, Mr. Bankman-Fried, 32, told people close to him that he expected to be moved to a federal correctional facility in Mendota, Calif., a person with knowledge of the matter said. A representative for the Bureau of Prisons declined to comment on Mr. Bankman-Fried, citing “privacy, safety and security reasons.” A spokesman for the prosecutors who oversaw Mr. Bankman-Fried’s case did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In a court filing on Wednesday afternoon, Lewis A. Kaplan, the judge overseeing his case, said the court “recommends” that the Bureau of Prisons keep Mr. Bankman-Fried at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Mr. Bankman-Fried had asked to remain there while he worked on an appeal challenging his conviction.

New York CNN —Prison officials began transferring former crypto mogul Sam Bankman-Fried to a new facility early Wednesday, removing him from the Brooklyn, New York, jail where he’s resided for the past nine months, a spokesperson for Bankman-Fried said. Mendota is home to one medium-security federal correctional institution with an adjacent minimum-security satellite facility, according to the Bureau of Prisons website. Bankman-Fried had sought to stay in New York in the near term while preparing his appeal on multiple federal counts of fraud and conspiracy, for which he was sentenced in March to 25 years in prison. A jury last fall found Bankman-Fried guilty of carrying out what prosecutors called one of the biggest financial crimes in US history. The Bureau of Prisons declined to provide details, telling CNN that it doesn’t comment on “the conditions of confinement for any individual, including potential transfers,” citing security concerns.

CNN —The legacy of “Saturday Night Fever” is stayin’ alive, as the dancefloor featured in the classic disco movie is set to fetch as much as $300,000 at auction next month. With its flashing colorful lights, the dancefloor provided the perfect backdrop for John Travolta’s character, Tony Manero, to flaunt his now-iconic groovy dance moves in his white shirt. After filming wrapped, the dancefloor stayed at the club until it closed down, when it was bought by an employee. The movie and its catchy soundtrack by the Bee Gees, meanwhile, helped to repopularize disco around the world at a time when its dominance was waning. Meanwhile, Jeff Bridges’ bowling costume, which he wears in the final three scenes of “The Big Lebowski,” could sell for $200,000.

I've visited all 50 states, and a few US airports stand out to me as being really cool. Nashville International Airport has some great dining options and live music. Some international airports are awesome because of their amenities and features, like Singapore Changi Airport with its massive indoor waterfall and movie theater. But what makes so many US airports cool is that they have unique amenities and local flavor. As a travel writer who has visited all 50 states, I've compiled a list of what I think are the coolest airports in the US.

Last September, the New York Police Department signed a sweeping agreement in federal court that was meant to end overwhelming responses to protests that often led to violent clashes, large-scale arrests and expensive civil rights lawsuits. The sight of hundreds of officers in tactical gear moving in on pro-Palestinian demonstrators in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, on Saturday suggested to civil libertarians that the department might not abide by the agreement when it is fully implemented. At least two officers wearing the white shirts of commanders were filmed punching three protesters who were prone in the middle of a crosswalk. And film clips of recent campus protests showed some officers pushing and dragging students, a handful of whom later said they had been injured by the police, though many officers appeared to show restraint during the arrests. “I think members of the public are very concerned that the police will be unwilling or unable to meet their end of the bargain,” said Jennvine Wong, a staff attorney with Legal Aid, which, along with the New York Civil Liberties Union, filed a lawsuit against the city over the department’s response to protests in 2020 after the killing of George Floyd.

Another protester who was filming the police was tackled and arrested.A police spokesman declined to comment on the officers using force on protesters. The police had not released details on the charges the protesters face as of early Sunday.

Violent confrontations at a pro-Palestinian rally in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, on Saturday reflected what some local officials and protest organizers called an unexpectedly aggressive Police Department response, with officers flooding the neighborhood and using force against protesters. At the rally, which drew hundreds of demonstrators, at least two officers wearing the white shirts of commanders were filmed punching three protesters who were prone in the middle of a crosswalk. One officer had pinned a man to the ground and repeatedly punched him in the ribs, a 50-second video clip shows. Another officer punched the left side of a man’s face as he held his head to the asphalt. The police arrested around 40 people who were “unlawfully blocking roadways,” Kaz Daughtry, the department’s deputy commissioner of operations, said on social media on Sunday.

These signs point to a new normal for Americans' post-pandemic leisure spending, which has stayed resilient despite the higher costs of going out. In 2023, 1.88% of the food and drink transactions Square processed took place between 11 a.m. and noon on Saturdays, up from 1.60% in 2019. Nowhere was the shift toward evening and weekend spending starker than in Boston, one of 23 major cities Square analyzed. There, a 10.1% decline in weekday lunch transactions was more than offset by 10.3% and 1.6% increases in weekend and happy hour transactions, respectively. "I don't really prioritize drinking during the weekdays," Louie said, and his weekend leisure spending "is quite inconsistent."

The New York City housing lottery program helps residents find affordable housing, including rent-stabilized apartments. "In the television show 'Seinfeld,' the character George [Costanza] falsely claimed to have interviewed for a job with the fictional company Vandelay Industries," the office noted. In the episode, the invariably hapless Costanza claims he was seeking a position as a latex salesman. Prosecutors said Sfraga promised victims investment returns as high as 60% in three months, but in reality used the money for his own benefit "to pay expenses, and to pay earlier victims and business associates." Sfraga, who lives in Brooklyn, pleaded guilty Thursday in Brooklyn federal court to wire fraud, prosecutors said. He faces a maximum possible sentence of 20 years in prison, in addition to being ordered to pay restitution of more than $1.3 million.

Does Your Dog Really Belong in This Restaurant?

On a quiet weekday evening inside a restaurant in Brooklyn, a dog under a table announced its presence with a single pronounced yap. At a scoop shop in downtown Manhattan, a large white poodle was spoon-fed what appeared to be vanilla ice cream. In the dining room of a chic Midtown restaurant, a teacup Pomeranian strutted across the floor. There are 617,000 licensed dogs in New York City, and the vast majority, presumably, eat in. But while no city agency tracks how many dogs are regulars at the city’s restaurants, anecdotal evidence suggests that the number is far from zero.
