NEW YORK (AP) — Marty Krofft, a TV producer known for imaginative children’s shows such as “H.R. The Kroffts eventually opened their own, the short-lived World of Sid & Marty Krofft, in Atlanta in the 1970s. Sid Krofft said on Instagram that he was heartbroken by his younger brother's death, telling fans, “All of you meant the world to him." While other producers might have contented themselves with their achievements far earlier, Marty Krofft indicated to The AP in 2015 that he no had interest in stepping back from show business. “What am I gonna do — retire and watch daytime television and be dead in a month?” he asked.

Marty Krofft, who, with his brother Sid, created a string of television shows that captured audiences from Saturday morning to prime time, including fantastical children’s fare, like “H.R. Pufnstuf” and “Land of the Lost,” and variety shows, like “Donny and Marie,” died on Saturday in Los Angeles. But Krofft shows, which featured extravagant puppets and scenery, were often expensive to produce and sometimes had premises that could be a hard sell; one show, for instance, focused on magical, talking hats. Marty’s business acumen and ability to woo studio executives ensured that some of the strangest programs ever to appear on the small screen actually got made. “Sid was always ‘the artist,’” Marty was quoted as saying in “Pufnstuf & Other Stuff: The Weird and Wonderful World of Sid & Marty Krofft” (1998), by the critic David Martindale.

Martin Walser, among the last of a generation of acerbic, socially engaged novelists who dominated the German literary scene after World War II, died on July 26 in Überlingen, Germany, a city on Lake Constance, along the Swiss border. His publisher, Rowohlt, announced his death in a statement but did not provide a cause. Alongside writers like Henrich Böll, Günter Grass and Siegfried Lenz, Mr. Walser wrote essays, plays and novels that skewered what they saw as the complacent conservatism of Germany as it rebuilt itself into an economic powerhouse during the 1950s and ’60s. “If one were to cite an example of historically conscious, committed writing in postwar German literature, who else would spring to mind than Martin Walser?” President Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany wrote after Mr. Walser’s death. In 1981, he received the Georg Büchner Prize, the highest literary honor in Germany.

(A stage musical, “Tammy Faye,” which opened last year in London, also incorporated the 1985 interview.) “That interview was why I needed to make the movie,” Ms. Chastain told Variety at the movie’s New York premiere in 2021. I’m 100 percent convinced that there were people — conservative Christians watching at home — who realized that they had judged their family members unlovingly. I’m convinced that that interview saved families and saved lives.”If Ms. Bakker defied expectations with that interview, Mr. Pieters long defied AIDS, surviving for decades despite repeated health struggles. What a privilege to have reached the age of 70, still dancing with joy.”

A MOST TOLERANT LITTLE TOWN: The Explosive Beginning of School Desegregation, by Rachel Louise MartinIn the dozen years since I read “The Warmth of Other Suns,” Isabel Wilkerson’s narrative masterpiece about the Great Migration, one passage has remained embedded in my mind. It is a description of Black men, women and children picking cotton in the 1920s. I was put in mind of that passage as I read Rachel Louise Martin’s “A Most Tolerant Little Town,” her unsparing account of an early effort at school desegregation in the Jim Crow South. It is another to be confronted with a meticulous, day-by-day reconstruction of relentless bigotry in action. To read “A Most Tolerant Little Town” is to be flooded with cross burnings, mob riots, night-riding raids, bombings, street-corner ambushes and racial slurs.

Best memory foam pillow for side sleepersSaatva Graphite Memory Foam Pillow $165 at Saatva This responsive and well-cushioned pillow is also cooling, thanks to its graphite-infused memory foam. (It’s technically made with shredded memory foam around a latex core.) More than other memory foam pillows we tested, the Saatva takes the shape of your head and neck—as in, you can see your form in the pillow. Another plus: It feels cool to the touch, which we found isn’t always the case with memory foam pillows we’ve tried. The company uses both graphite and gel in its memory foam to carry heat away from your body.
In doing so they should deploy the financial innovation which helped to halt the Latin American debt crisis of the 1980s: Brady bonds. It requires a 21st-century Marshall Plan led by America and joined by European allies. For example, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has 520 projects in Ukraine and will play an important ongoing role. Specifically, the government in Kyiv should investigate an equivalent to the Brady bonds. For Ukraine to benefit from similar relief, the U.S. Treasury and other key finance ministries should back new Brady bonds.
ABIDJAN, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Ivory Coast has completed construction of a second container terminal at its main port in Abidjan, paving the way for it to become a regional shipping hub, officials said late on Friday. The new container terminal will be able to receive large ships from Asia, Europe and America that previously had to land goods in South Africa, transferring them to smaller ships to reach West Africa. "We are no longer a second port. We are becoming a hub," said Andre N'Doli, technical director of the terminal, called Cote d'Ivoire Terminal (CIT). The terminal is expected to allow Abidjan to increase container traffic to 3 million TEU containers from 1.2 million TEU containers per year, port authorities said.
