Here’s a (non-exhaustive) account of how Musk has fundamentally changed Twitter since he made one of the most consequential acquisitions of the social media age. Many of Musk’s content and product decisions have also led to what civil society groups have reported as a troubling spread of hateful speech on the platform. He recommended that X users monitor the Israel-Hamas conflict by following an account known for spreading disinformation, before later deleting his post. And, in an attempt to prove that former Twitter executives deliberately discriminated against conservatives on the platform, Musk provided a handpicked group of journalists with selective access to company records. It is perhaps Musk’s all-consuming presence that has most undermined what users used to love about Twitter.

From the outset of this weekend's Israel-Hamas conflict, graphic footage of abductions and military operations have spread like wildfire on social media platforms, including X, formerly known as Twitter. Under Musk, X has prioritized user-driven content tagging with Community Notes, the preexisting feature formerly known as Birdwatch. While the terrorist organization is banned from most social media platforms, including X, it continues to share videos on Telegram. Paid verification purportedly boosts a user's posts and comments on X, and some posts tagged as misleading have come from those verified users. Correction: This article has been updated to correctly reflect Alex Goldenberg's comment on English-language disinformation on X and Twitter.

Here are four important steps to take to determine just how much money you'll need to save:1. Calculate how much you'll need to save during retirementUnderstanding what you expect retirement to look like will help determine how much you'll need in order to fund that lifestyle. In retirement, your savings will cover many of the same expenses that you had prior to retirement. This rule states that retirees can withdraw up to 4% of their retirement savings in year one of retirement. So, if you have $2,000,000 in retirement savings, you would withdraw $80,000 that first year.

As Elon Musk works quickly to reshape Twitter Inc. and realize his vision for a platform more focused on free speech, one feature is gaining prominence: Community Notes. Previously called Birdwatch, the feature is designed to combat false and misleading information by relying on crowdsourced contributions to add context to tweets. Mr. Musk has publicly supported the feature, which has fact-checked his own tweeting. It predates his takeover of Twitter late last month.
To his critics, and to companies that have paused advertising on Twitter, Musk asked to be given a chance. Users who pay for Twitter Blue, the platform’s subscription service, will not be required to provide identifying information other than a credit card and a phone number, Musk confirmed. Brands will be expected to foot the bill for their own verification on Twitter Blue, Musk said. Yoel Roth, Twitter’s head of integrity and safety, said Twitter is increasing its investment in ideas to battle hateful content. Musk also described Twitter’s existing verification system as a “lords and peasants situation” and compared it to the American Revolutionary War.
Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey failed to see eye-to-eye on the name of a Twitter feature that flags misleading posts. Musk renamed Birdwatch to Community Notes but Dorsey said it was "the most boring Facebook name." It was first piloted in 2021, but Musk said on Saturday he wanted to rename Birdwatch to "Community Notes." Musk replied: "As judged by the people of Twitter via Community Notes (formerly Birdwatch)." "Community notes is the most boring Facebook name ever," Dorsey said in response to Musk.
Mark Cuban told Elon Musk that Twitter was "his business," following an exchange between the pair. Elon Musk replied to Cuban, saying: "$8 for all." Cuban wrote in the tweet. Musk replied to Cuban, saying: "$8 for all." Your decision," Cuban wrote in a quote-tweet to Musk.
Comedian Kathy Griffin's Twitter account was suspended after she impersonated Elon Musk. Griffin now joins a range of several celebrities and figures who had their Twitter handles suspended for parodying Musk. Any name change at all from a verified account would lead to "temporary loss of verified checkmark," he added. In a similar case, former NFL punter Chris Kluwe had his verified account suspended when he changed its details to match Musk's profile. Too many bird groups fighting each other internally other at Twitter," Musk wrote.
Twitter owner Elon Musk said the social platform needs to become "the most accurate source of information." Critics pointed out that Musk shared an inaccurate story about the attack on Paul Pelosi last week. "Twitter needs to become by far the most accurate source of information about the world. Musk tweeted Sunday evening. On Friday, users added context to a tweet Musk had shared about "activist groups pressuring advertisers" to pause their ads on Twitter.
Elon Musk said Twitter's Birdwatch feature will now be called "Community Notes." It also will be renamed "Community Notes," and Musk tweeted that the tool has "incredible potential for improving information accuracy" on the platform. Birdwatch notes first became public to users in early October, after the feature was launched in a pilot program in the US in January 2021. Among tweets where Birdwatch notes have appeared in the past week is a post from Musk himself. According to the company, "Birdwatch is made up of independent contributors, and individual notes are never written by Twitter."
The groups said on Friday they are escalating their pressure and demanding brands pull their Twitter ads globally. Staff who worked in engineering, communications, product, content curation and machine learning ethics were among those impacted by the layoffs, according to tweets from Twitter staff. Shannon Raj Singh, an attorney who was Twitter's acting head of human rights, tweeted on Friday that the entire human rights team at the company had been cut. Musk tweeted that his team had made no changes to content moderation and done "everything we could" to appease the groups. Employees of Twitter Blue, the premium subscription service that Musk is bolstering, were also let go.
In a tweet Wednesday, the White House credited President Biden with raising Social Security payments. The White House said it was missing context, but Biden has touted the Social Security increase before. "Seniors are getting the biggest increase in their Social Security checks in 10 years through President Biden's leadership," the since-deleted post from the official White House Twitter account said. In line with such adjustments, the Social Security Administration announced last month benefits would be increasing by 8.7%. But it wasn't the first time Biden has appeared to try and take credit for the boost to Social Security payments.
The Birdwatch program, however, was implemented in January 2021 and expanded to more users in early October 2022. Birdwatch is a community-based Twitter program that allows users to add notes on tweets they find misleading. Elon Musk completed the $44 billion acquisition of Twitter on Oct. 28, 2022 (here), a few weeks after the Birdwatch program was expanded and 21 months after it began. Birdwatch notes could be added to tweets, such as those from Biden and the White House, prior to Musk’s acquisition. Elon Musk did not implement the Birdwatch program, which has placed notes adding additional context on U.S. President Joe Biden’s tweets.
Ghislaine Maxwell reportedly asked Elon Musk to destroy the internet in the famous photo of the two. The photo was taken at a Vanity Fair event in 2014, but didn't surface on social media until 2020. "She photo-bombed me once at a Vanity Fair party several years ago," he tweeted in July 2020. When the photograph was taken, Maxwell asked Musk if there was a way to delete information about oneself off the internet, the Times reported on Tuesday. Maxwell also told the Tesla CEO she wanted him to destroy the internet, a Vanity Fair worker who was standing next to the pair told The Times.
