In that fairly distant past, the politics of Israel-Palestine broke down into alignments that were familiar and decades-old. On the pro-Israel side in the U.S. were three broad factions: Zionist Democrats, centrist and liberal; neoconservative hawks; and evangelical Christians. But 2023 may be remembered as the moment when Arab and Muslim discontent began to really matter inside Western countries as well. And the tacit alliance between this diaspora and a secular, feminist, gay-affirming Western progressivism — “Islamo-gauchisme” in the French phrase — raises big questions for both progressives and conservative Muslims about who is using whom, and how the Western left and Western Islam might ultimately co-evolve. This isn’t the George W. Bush-era version, with its world-bestriding confidence in American power and its hawkish grand strategy.

Imagine if Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the crypto trading firm FTX and defendant in one of the largest financial fraud trials in history, was actually named Samson, rather than Samuel. Like the biblical character, Mr. Bankman-Fried’s symbolic shearing for his courtroom appearance may become a fabled reflection of promise brought low in the tales to come of our digital age. An apologia writ in hair about what happens when a muscular intellect is married to frail corporate governance. Everyone (or every juror) can see a hairdo and relate. Besides, from the beginning it was by Mr. Bankman-Fried’s hair that so many knew him.

But supporters of the Palestinians say they feel blocked from publicly expressing support or concern for people in the Hamas-controlled enclave of Gaza without risking arrest, their jobs or immigration status. The NumbersGoldman Sachs reported a profit of $1.1 billion in the second quarter, down more than 60 percent from last year. Goldman acquired GreenSky less than two years ago, as part of an ill-fated foray into consumer lending. Goldman has gone through at least three rounds of layoffs this year, taking head count down 8 percent so far this year. Having already conceded some losses in that area, Goldman can now shift attention to other areas of the business. The bank is still unwinding the businesses, at a loss, and it may expect more ugly headlines until that is finished.
