ET Live Updates: Washington Braces for Biden’s Inauguration and Trump’s Impeachment Trial President-elect Joe Biden plans to issue dozens of executive orders in his first days in office, reversing a Trump travel ban, rejoining a climate change agreement and requiring masks on federal property. On his first day in office alone, Mr. Biden intends a flurry of executive orders that will be partly substantive and partly symbolic. Members of the National Guard walking outside the Capitol in Washington on Sunday. The authorities are now flagging threats of violence and rioting leading up to President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s inauguration. That has not stopped Republican lawmakers and some of their constituents from pushing these narratives to defend Mr. Trump.

How Republicans Are Warping Reality Around the Capitol Attack

Immediately after the attack on the U.S. Capitol, all corners of the political spectrum repudiated the mob of President Trump’s supporters. Yet within days, prominent Republicans, party officials, conservative media voices and rank-and-file voters began making a rhetorical shift to try to downplay the group’s violent actions. The shift is revealing about how conspiracy theories, deflection and political incentives play off one another in Mr. Trump’s G.O.P. But any window of reflection now seems to be closing as Republicans try to pass blame and to compare last summer’s lawlessness, which was condemned by Democrats, to an attack on Congress, which was inspired by Mr. Trump. “The violence at the Capitol was shameful,” Rudolph W. Giuliani, the president’s lawyer, tweeted at 6:55 a.m. the morning after the attack.

Body cam footage from Boston civil rights protests shows how police are out of control. In the wake of last week's Capitol riots, the danger of the American right-wing has become impossible to ignore. Cops on the groundOff duty cops were a presence in the crowd that stormed the Capitol, according to numerous reports. Police showed their appreciation during civil rights protests this summer in what could be a preview of what's to come. This treatment provides a striking contrast with how police respond to progressives and civil rights demonstrators.

A Washington Post photographer caught a glimpse of President Donald Trump and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell's meeting notes on Friday, where they appeared to discuss explosive national security moves. It appears that one of those meetings was discussing drastic national security measures with Trump ally MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell. A close-up photo of Lindell and Trump's meeting notes was captured by Washington Post photographer Jabin Botsford, including a number of phrases and agenda items. Other phrases, which are not fully legible, reference investigating the 2020 election, which Trump lost and has yet to concede. Steve Vladeck, a national security law expert and professor at the University of Texas School of Law, responded to the alleged agenda items on Twitter.

Over 20 Latino leaders from progressive groups in Florida have signed a letter calling on Spanish-language and Latino-focused media outlets in Miami to stop spreading misinformation "that emboldens conspiracy theories." The day of the riot, a host on AM station Actualidad falsely claimed that "thousands of dead people voted, thousands of incarcerated people voted, thousands of noncitizens voted." The host, Agustin Acosta, went to say, "I think that in Nevada or Arizona, 42,000 people voted more than once." Another AM radio host the day after the riot said the loose collective of activists known as antifa had sent "busloads" of people to Washington. Far-right personalities are trying to minimize the Capitol attack and divert blame away from President Trump. One of the Trump supporters, Ryan Wolfe, told Lavandera, "I believe that either foreign intelligence officers or local militant groups incited the conflict." The Antifa narrative, designed to exculpate the Trump supporters who ransacked the Capitol -- and also exonerate Trump for encouraging them -- has been debunked, yet it persists. "Without a teleportation device, it is impossible for somebody to have been at the president's speech and then at the Capitol," Kassam claimed on OAN. His so-called evidence: Some protesters were already at the Capitol while Trump was still speaking about a mile and a half away.

President Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani told The Hill on Tuesday that he was referencing "Game of Thrones" when he told a crowd at Trump's January 6 "Save America" rally that "we will have a trial by combat." Speaking to The Hill on Tuesday, Giuliani told reporter Brett Samuels that he was referencing "Game of Thrones," which he called the "famous documentary about fictitious medieval England." Giuliani went on to say that his "trial by combat" comment was not actually a call to violence. McCarthy told Trump during a heated call on Monday according to Axios that the mob was "not antifa — it's MAGA. "Kevin McCarthy doesn't know what the hell he's talking about," Giuliani told The Hill.

“He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding.” “These facts require immediate actions by President Trump,” he continued. A few Republicans defended him, but most others simply argued that a rush to impeach Mr. Trump without a hearing or an investigation raised constitutional questions. With Democrats controlling the House, Mr. Trump is expected to become the first American president to be impeached twice. Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington sent a letter to Mr. Trump on Sunday asking for an emergency declaration to obtain additional funding for inauguration security. On Tuesday, a federal inspector general questioned an order to deliver the estimates before Mr. Trump leaves office, after whistle-blowers warned that the rush would imperil their accuracy.

Now, with his claims of a landslide electoral win, he has crossed a line that conservative media is asked to cross, too, lest it be left behind. And yet that may be where conservative media outlets find themselves. After Jan. 6, it should be clear to conservative media organizations that the stakes of this game are much, much higher. In late December, Mike Lindell, chief executive of MyPillow and a big pusher of pro-Trump conspiracy theories, appeared on a Newsmax show guest-hosted by Sebastian Gorka, traditionally one of the most boisterous Trump cheerleaders in all of conservative media. REUTERS/Jim Bourg/File Photo(Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump has privately blamed ‘Antifa people’ for storming the U.S. Capitol last Wednesday, even though clear video and documentary evidence shows the rioters were overwhelmingly his supporters, Axios reported. Trump made the remark in a 30-minute-plus phone call Monday morning with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Axios reported bit.ly/2K4mNM6, citing a White House official and another source familiar with the call. However, McCarthy told Trump in the call, which according to Axios was tense and aggressive at times, “It’s not Antifa, it’s MAGA. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The storming of the Capitol building last week by Trump supporters delayed the certification of Biden’s election victory.

The attack on the Capitol made so many of the ugliest parts of Donald Trump obvious even to people who pretended they didn't exist. In a short speech the day after the terrorist attack on the Capitol, Trump did not apologize for inciting these individuals to insurrection. He referred to Trump's supporters as "hobbits," and he did not enjoy spending time among them. In 2019 documentary "The Brink" he addressed a group of Trump supporters in a modest living room, assailing the virtues of middle class nationalists around the world. But echoing a sentiment held by many Trump supporters, Emerson expressed frustration with what he called the hypocrisy of those who condemned the riots but turned a blind eye to violence at Black Lives Matter protests last summer. They blamed the violence on left wing protesters - without any evidence - and expressed little hope that the deeply divided country would unify anytime soon. On Thursday, as the threat of a second impeachment loomed, Trump denounced the violence and committed to a transition of power. Several administration officials have resigned but Trump’s fans appeared to care little about what politicians - even Republicans - had to say in Washington. She said Trump supporters were tired of being wrongly labeled as ignorant, violent or racist.
